Terms: Full-time, permanent

Working hours: 5 days per week and evening work where necessary

Salary: £43,000 per annum (dependent on experience)

Purpose of Job • The Technical and Buildings Manager (TBM) is a member of the Donmar’s Senior Management Team and is the first point of contact for enquiries to the operation/production department, overseeing the efficient day-to-day operation, management, maintenance and development of all aspects of the Donmar’s buildings and storage facilities • Lead on all Health & Safety (H&S) matters across both buildings (Dryden St and Earlham St) and the wider organisation • Support freelance production managers advising them of the facilities and resources available at Donmar Theatre. • Be responsible for line managing the production department and for scheduling and rostering according to the building’s activity

Responsibilities

Staffing • Line-manage, schedule, recruit, and supervise all technical and production staff (both in-house and casual), making best use of their time, including the processing and approval of accurate timesheets within budget • Ensure training needs of production staff are met and reviewed as appropriate, especially with respect to H&S regulations • Lead regular team meetings, ensuring the team is kept informed of artistic planning and other Donmar activity • Lead on recruitment and booking of casual production staff; conduct inductions and appraisals, and handle all HR matters relating to the contracted/permanent technical teams • Ensure that current Donmar, union, and employment working practices are adhered, referring to the BECTU house agreement where required • Ensure the safety and wellbeing of all technical staff, and those that have dealings with the department, by complying with statutory and H&S regulations

Health & Safety • Act as the H&S lead, implementing proper practices and adhering to in-house H&S policy and general H&S regulations across both buildings; working with the Senior Producer (SP), Operations Manager (OM) and Head of Audience Experience (HoAE) to develop policy and best practice • Be responsible for liaising with statutory bodies in regard to H&S, including the local authorities (Camden and Westminster), and ensuring CDM regulations and processes are upheld during all fit ups and technical rehearsal periods • Ensure all production-related work is safe, complying with current entertainments licensing, fire, building and H&S legislation • Ensure all equipment and processes are regularly audited and fit for purpose • Identify hazards and complete suitable risk assessments for all production-related activities • Work with visiting Production Managers to ensure risk assessments are completed for all productions within the building, including CDM compliance • Ensure all H&S maintenance and training records relevant to the department are completed and communicated to staff

• Chair the internal H&S working group and ensure progress of relevant actions and decisions • With the HoAE, ensure the H&S of audiences and other members of the public that visit the theatre • Manage and oversee arrangements for the fire strategy in both buildings, including fire evacuation, fire detection

Productions and Other Activity • Liaise with Production Managers on realising all technical aspects of productions and helping to identify cost savings and economies. • Respond to requests for technical information and support for all Donmar activities, both internally and externally • Oversee the scheduling and recruitment of casual staff for productions including wardrobe, stage and lighting crew • Work with the Technical Assistant (TA) and OM in supporting the Stage Managers in carrying out their duties, ensuring they are inducted into the building and understand in-house systems and procedures • Ensure all backstage areas are kept tidy and maintained in an appropriate manner • Reconcile and monitor show and departmental expenditure, including tracking supplier accounts, credit card expenditure, and petty cash claims • Work with relevant team members to deliver all technical aspects of ad hoc events, such as fundraising galas and festivals • Where necessary, attend production fit-ups

Buildings and Facilities • Work with the OM to: o oversee maintenance contracts for the building, monitoring performance, safety, and effectiveness, and tendering periodically as required o set and monitor budgets for the various areas of the building with the Director of Finance, reporting any areas of concern as they arise o ensure PAT testing takes place building-wide in conjunction with Head of Lighting o work with and advise the HoAE on front of house building contracts and issues o responsibility for all on- and off-site storage o support the OM on management of the cleaning contract/staff, ensuring housekeeping throughout the venue • Advise on medium- and long-term building and technical requirements which may need substantial investment, allowing a reasonable lead time for any fundraising requirements • With the HoAE, ensure appropriate duty management arrangements are in place at all times • Implement and review all operational procedures, including opening-up/closing, fire strategy, first aid, security, pest control, cleaning and housekeeping • Ensure a schedule of maintenance for all stock lighting and stage equipment is in-place

Sustainability • Lead, with the OM, on the Donmar’s Environmental Policy, including the review and implementation of the Sustainability Action Plan, ensuring the Donmar continues to work sustainably, striving to reduce energy consumption throughout both buildings and across the organisation • Consider how the production department’s activities impact sustainability and implement improvements to reduce environmental impacts • Prominent involvement in industry-wide and local initiatives around sustainability, including those introduced by ACE, Julie’s Bicycle, the LTC and local councils • Work with the OM and Finance team to monitor the theatre’s environmental impact and upload data through the Industry Green Production tool

General • Oversee annual and strategic production department expenditure, ensuring it is within the annual budget • Attend regular meetings including in relation to season planning, H&S, and other operational meetings as required • Keep appraised of developments in technical theatre and production practices; advise and implement changes as necessary • Act as a lead keyholder for both buildings • Be available for call-out outside normal opening hours during production periods and in emergency situations • Represent the Donmar at events where necessary • Support other departments when and where necessary

Person Specification

Essential • A minimum of five years’ relevant theatre operations/productions experience at a management level • Knowledge of building services and systems • Extensive knowledge of all aspects of technical procedures • Experience of managing budgets and reconciling expenditure • Excellent understanding of relevant H&S legislation, technical standards and CDM regulations across buildings and productions • Experience carrying out and implementing risk assessments and a good knowledge of the practical application of H&S to a technical department • Ability to prioritise a complex workload, including willingness and ability to work long hours • Excellent organisational skills • Ability to negotiate and communicate effectively at all levels, with good written and verbal communications skills • Experience of managing staff, with proven leadership skills, and an ability to encourage and motivate staff • Excellent IT skills and CAD experience • Ability to anticipate and resolve problems, and be a creative thinker

Desirable: • First Aid at Work qualification • IOSH Managing Safely or NEBOSH qualification • Experience of working as part of management team • Experience of managing Continuous Professional Development across a team
