SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA WAIDHOFEN AN DER YBBS An Orchestra with tradition and enthusiasm Waidhofen/Ybbs is a little town in Lower Austria with a rich diversity in cultural and musical life. The town is well-known for its local music school and a long-standing tradition in orchestra playing. The symphony orchestra “Kammerorchester Waidhofen an der Ybbs”, registered society since 1973, plays an important role in the cultural life of the region and has three to four concert projects a year. Every autumn the orchestra plays a concert together with the local choir Cantores Dei, every second year a series of New Year's Concerts in the tradition of the famous Viennese New Year's Concert. One central concern of the ensemble is to be a platform for young gifted musicians. Thus many musicians who later on got engagements with professional orchestras gained their ﬁrst experience in orchestra playing at the Kammerorchester Waidhofen/Ybbs. The most famous among these is Prof. Rainer Küchl, former leader of the Wiener Philharmoniker, who has also performed a lot of violin concerts together with this orchestra. Furthermore the ensemble has already played with well-known musicians like Stefan Vladar, Christopher Hinterhuber, Paul Gulda, Tamás Varga, Ernst Ottensamer or Ludwig Streicher and went on tour to countries like Italy, Germany, Croatia, Madeira, China or Iran. The repertory of the orchestra covers a broad range of styles, from baroque to contemporary music. What is really special is the arrangement of the ensemble – a mixture of people of various kinds of age and professions - playing music in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Conductor: Wolfgang Sobotka (conductor of Kammerorchester Waidhofen/Ybbs since 1985) He studied history (University Vienna), cello, music education and instrumental music education (Uni- versity for Music and Performing Arts Vienna) as well as conducting (Brucknerkonservatorium Linz). Master Classes and competitions in Austria, Italy, Germany and Switzerland. He has worked with well- known orchestras and ensembles, for example Südböhmisches Kammerorchester Budweis, Wiener Kammerorchester, Neue Linzer Streichersolisten, Junges Orchester Wien, Tonkünstler Orchster Niederösterreich, Philharmonisches Orchester Criowa, Ensemble für Neue Musik Budweis, Mozar- torchester Wien. He gave lectures and the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and was in charge of the music school at Waidhofen/Ybbs. 1998 until 2016 member of the provincial parliament of lower Austria (vice govenor of lower Austria 2009-2016). At a glance Austria is a federal republic and a parliamentary democracy. The Austrian Parliament is a bicameral body composed of the National Council (Nationalrat) and the Federal Council (Bundesrat). The 183 Members of the National Council are directly elected by the citizens. Elections to the National Council must take place every five years at the latest, and are based on the principles of proportional representation, an open list system and preferential votes. Austria is the only EU country where the voting age for national Parliamentary elections is 16. In most cases, the National Council issues federal legislation in conjunction with the Federal Council. However, with some rare exceptions the Federal Council only has a so-called “suspensive” veto right. The National Council can override a challenge by the Federal Council to one of its resolutions by voting on the resolution again. The current Austrian coalition government under Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP/EPP) is composed of the Austrian People's party (ÖVP/EPP) and Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ/ENF). 2. I attended and spoke at the Europa Forum in Lower Austria at the invitation of Austria’s Foreign Ministry. The Forum, now in its 22nd year and established on Austrian accession to the EU, is regularly attended by senior Government figures in central and eastern Europe. It provides a platform for discussions on European Affairs, with a view to reconnecting European institutions with the citizens they serve. Security, regional cooperation, economic growth and cultural development are all talking points. The conference was held in the wake of the publication of the European Commission’s White Paper on the future of Europe. Following Estonia, Bulgaria and Austria will be holding the EU presidency in the first and second semester of 2018 respectively. 2. This year’s forum was well attended by senior Government figures. Sebastian Kurz, Austria’s 30 year old Foreign Minister and widely tipped to be Austria’s next Chancellor (after October elections) was present along with Austrian Vice Chancellor and Justice Minister Wolfgang Brandstetter. EXPLORATORY ANALYSES OF THE 1966-1971 AUSTRIAN MIGRATION TABLE Ross D. MacKinnon Anna Maria Skarke September 1975 Research Reports are publications reporting on the work of the authors. Any views or conclusions are those of the authors, and do not necessarily reflect those of IIASA. Abstract Four different techniques of a rather simple type are used to analyze recent interregional migration flows in Austria. Purely descriptive methods are used to reduce the large data set to proportions which facilitate interpretation. Ptethods of Markov and matrix growth operator type are used to project future spatial redistribution of popula- tion arising from both migration and differences in the rates of natural increase. A least squares approach is used to measure the attractiveness and emissiveness of regions based on a revealed pref- erence rationale. Finally, the biproportional economic input-output and transportation origin- destination tables are used to generate the most plausible changes in migration propensities which would give rise to a specified target population distribution. After some general remarks on their specific role within an urban network and the challenges they face in a globalizing world historical heritage is being analysed as one future chance for positive development. Journal of Social Science Education Volume 18 Issue 1 Fall 2019 Documentation DOI 10.4119/jsse-1281 "Austria is celebrating itself” The House of Austrian History A Press Report Bernhard Trautwein University of Vienna – The opening of the Haus der Geschichte Österreich (HGÖ - House of Austrian History) is the culmination of a discussion which has taken nearly one hundred years. – The discussion is the result of a struggle between political parties over the right to seek a definite interpretation of the Austrian interwar period. – The didactical-conceptual orientation of the announced project has the potential to both discuss and question politically influenced interpretations of the Austrian interwar period. Purpose: On the occasion of its one hundredth birthday, the Republic of Austria has opened a history museum in November 2018 called the House of Austrian History. The considerations towards this are almost as old as the republic itself. This article shall analyze why political parties could not agree on a specific project for so long and illustrate the decision-making process and its implementation before ultimately categorizing the didactical-museographical concept of the exhibition from a historical-didactical perspective. Design/methodology/approach: The basis for the analysis is provided by Austrian daily newspaper coverage of the House of Austrian History. The body of sources limits itself to the period between January 2008 and January 2019 and has been evaluated based on the analysis of its content. Findings: In the course of the discussion, which preceded the opening of the House of Austrian History, the Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP) and the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) debated bitterly for decades about how to best interpret Austrian contemporary history and were unable to find common ground.
