De I'existencia Deis Iacetans PYRENAE. núm. 35, vol. PARAULES CLAU LAIETANS, LACETANS, IACETANS, PALETNOLOGIA, CULTURA IBERICA. The ancient sources about Iberia talk about the ancient people named Lacetanian. The absolute lack of any kind of non-literary evidence about them has incited a large and old polemic attemp ting to solve the various and deep contradictions contained in the literary corpus. A better way to study this case consists in changing this lack of evidence into a positive datum, making a dif ferent use of the literary evidence by developing a recurrence analysis inserted into a larger stock of evidence about the ancient Iberian peoples. This approach, when applied with a strict criti cism, shows the weak points the main interpretation attempts and suggests that the Lacetanian did not exist. They are just the result of a confusion involving two other peoples (who certainly existed): Laietanian and Iacetanian. KEYWORDS LAIETANIAN, LACETANIAN, IACETANIAN, PALETHNOLOGY, IBERIAN CULTURE. Data de recepció: 14-07-2004. Data d'acceptació: 17-09-2004 7 ALFRED BROCH 1 GARCIA De I'existencia deIs Iacetans 1. 35, vol. 2 (2004) ISSN, 0079-8215 (p. 7-29) 9 ALFRFD BROC II I GARClA De I'cxislencia deis lacetans Fig . 1. 208 Book Reviews / Ancient Civilizations from Scythia to Siberia 14 (2008) 193-220 An Atlas for Celtic Studies: Archaeology and Names in Ancient Europe and Early Medieval Ireland, Britain and Brittany. By John T. Koch, in collaboration with Raimund Karl, Antone Minard and Simon Ó’Faoláin. Celtic Studies Publications XII, Oxbow Books, Oxford and Celtic Studies Publications 2007. 224 p., ISBN-13: 978-1-84217-309-1; ISBN-10: 1-84217-309-X. Th e beginning of the 21st century was rich in the publication of Atlases dedicated to the (pre)history of the Celts in Europe and Asia Minor. Th ey are all diff erent in approaches, presented data and printing quality, and target diff erent audiences, both expert and lay. Th e Atlas for Celtic Studies compiled most recently by the team lead by Professor John T. Koch at the Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies of the University of Wales in Aberys- twyth is very diff erent from the available publications with similar titles and is an event in Celtic Studies. Th e date range which this new Atlas covers is “from the Late Bronze Age (LBA) to the Central Middle Ages, c. 1200 BC – c. AD 1200, with most intense focus on the Iron Age to the pre-Viking Middle Ages, c. 800 BC – c. AD 800” (p. 4). Quite reasonably Koch subdivides the data presented here into the Ancient Celtic and Neo-Celtic horizons. Th e latter corresponds to the Early Middle Ages and is relevant only for Britain, Ireland and Brittany. Th is twofold division is refl ected in the structure of this book.

Abstract AH the populi or gentes amongst the iberi, whose names we know thanks to classic texts, have an eponym capital with only a very few not on record. W e try to find an explanation for this apparently anomalous fact. The case of contestani, lacetani and cerretani are particularly outstanding. Palabras clave: Hispania prerromana. Iberos. Ciuitates. Populi.

  • The History of the Iberian Archaeology
The History of Iberian Archaeology: one archaeology for two Spains Arturo Ruiz, Alberto Sánchez, Juan P. Bellón Introduction In this article we set out to analyse, from a archaeological point of view, a political problem which goes beyond archaeology, as demostrated by current political debate, and even by acts of violence. Throughout the 19th century, especially in the latter half, a centralist political model for Spain was developed, which failed to find a political balance between the State and the autonomous traditions of various regions of the Iberian Peninsula. As a result of this failure, towards the end of 19th century legitimation programmes began to be constructed, based on the history of the peoples of these regions. This led to a search in protohistorical archaeology (Iberians, Celts, Tartessians, etc…) for the solution to the political problems caused by a lack of institutional agreement. Peripheral reactions to the centralist model, the lack of agreement between the centralist model and peripheral regions, and even local reactions to regional models all fueled a debate which continues today. Archaeological research has an important voice in this debate, through the deconstruction of the processes which led to paradigmatic statements based sometimes on insufficiently tested scientific data. A time of crisis: from August 1897 to December 1898 The starting point of this study is the 4th of August 1897, when an Iberian carved stone bust was accidentally discovered in Elche in Eastern Spain (Figure 1). The finding was published in the local press on the 8th of August. Ten days later the bust was sold to the Louvre, and by the 30th of August begun the Paris-bound journey of ‘La Dama de Elche’, soon to be the paradigmatic figure of Iberian culture.

ILARCUS PORCIUS CATO A CONSERVATIVE S’I‘ATESIVIAN IN THE SECOND CENTURY B. C. by Richard S. Williams This thesis is a historical biography of Marcus Porcius Cato based on the accounts of ancient authors, particularly Plutarch and Livy, and on the fragments of Cato's speeches which are still extant. Attention has also been given to the interpretations of modern authors. AS a young man, Marcus Porcius Cato began his political career at the urging of a wealthy patrician neighbor, Lucius Valerius Flaccus, a member of the Fabian party. Allying himself with the Fabians to gain the political support which his family lacked, Cato rapidly held the succession of magistracies in the cursus honorum, culminating in the consulship in 195 B. C. which he shared with Flaccus. Cato had already developed the conservative outlook which would characterize him in later years, although it was not so static nor so strongly anti-Greek as Plutarch would have us believe. As praetor in Sardinia, Cato reduced the oppression of usurers and lived a frugal life in order to reduce the burden to the state and to provide an example to the provincials. In the beginning of his consulship, Cato stoutly, although unsuccessfully, Opposed the repeal of the sumptuary Oppian Law.

In Southem Spain Tartessis existed for quite a long period and afier its desintegration on its remainder sprang up sorne petty kingdoms. Apart frorn these, in tIte South and Soutbeast of tbe Iberian Pe- ninsula and, as an exeption, in tIte East in one case, emerged primitive «forne sta- tes’>. city-states cosisting of a city centre plus an agricultural area.
