  • New Directions: Olivier, Branagh, and Shakespeare's "Henry V"
New Directions: Olivier, Branagh, and Shakespeare’s Henry V A Senior Honors Thesis By Michael Descy Under the Guidance of Professor William Flesch For The Department of English Brandeis University Spring 2000 -1- Shakespeare Versus Film Shakespeare’s ongoing popularity, durability, and quality make his plays popular source material for movies. Countless films, from Kurosawa’s Ran to the recent teen comedy 10 Things I Hate About You, are adaptations of Shakespeare plays. For the most part, though, these films tend to be as far away from Shakespeare as Shakespeare was from his source material—they are not Shakespeare films as academics define them. True Shakespeare films are adaptations that strive to retain as much of the language and carry the same intent of the original plays. Inevitably, they must also carry the vision of their directors, and the source material must be altered, sometimes drastically, to suit the screen. Putting Shakespeare on film is not easy. As adaptations go, they face a unique set of problems that are compounded by both the audience’s familiarity with the plays, which raises expectations for the movie, and with the audience’s unfamiliarity with Shakespeare’s Elizabethan language in film settings. The plays themselves also run far longer than the traditional movie length of two hours, which puts added strain on a typical movie audience. The language is far more dense, voluminous, and descriptive than normal movie dialogue, which makes the words seem redundant and the movie overly “talky.” Finally, the texts themselves are so entrenched in our culture that they approach sacred works, which renders the necessary cutting and continuity editing sacrilege.

The majority of these studies have focused on the interaction between a local language and a non-local language. In this project, I propose an analysis of the mixture of two world languages (Spanish and English), which can be categorised as both local and non-local. I do this through the analysis of the enormously successful reggaeton genre, which is characterised by its use of Spanglish. I used two data types to inform my research: a corpus of code-switching instances in top 20 reggaeton songs, and a questionnaire on attitudes towards Spanglish in general and in music. I collected 200 answers to the questionnaire – half from American English-speakers, and the other half from Spanish-speaking Hispanics of various nationalities.

• Queer Identities and Glee
IDENTITY AND SOLIDARITY IN ONLINE COMMUNITIES: QUEER IDENITIES AND GLEE Katie M. Buckley A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Music August 2014 Committee: Katherine Meizel, Advisor Kara Attrep Megan Rancier © 2014 Katie Buckley All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Katherine Meizel, Advisor Glee, a popular FOX television show that began airing in 2009, has continuously pushed the limits of what is acceptable on American television. This musical comedy, focusing on a high school glee club, incorporates numerous stereotypes and real-world teenage struggles. This thesis focuses on the queer characteristics of four female personalities: Santana, Brittany, Coach Beiste, and Coach Sue. I investigate how their musical performances are producing a constructive form of mass media by challenging hegemonic femininity through camp and by producing relatable queer female role models. In addition, I take an ethnographic approach by examining online fan blogs from the host site Tumblr. By reading the blogs as a digital archive and interviewing the bloggers, I show the positive and negative effects of an online community and the impact this show has had on queer girls, allies, and their worldviews. iv This work is dedicated to any queer human being who ever felt alone as a teenager. v ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to extend my greatest thanks to my teacher and advisor, Dr. Meizel, for all of her support through the writing of this thesis and for always asking the right questions to keep me thinking. I would also like to thank Dr.
