In celebration of the founding of their new ensemble, Three Strange Angels, I wrote this little piece for tuned cowbells, crotales, tuned gongs and vibraphone. The title alludes not only to the name of the ensemble, but also to the insistent chiming and air of quiet reflection and meditation. Richard Baker Richard Baker is a leading figure on the British contemporary music scene as a composer-conductor. He studied composition in the Netherlands with Louis Andriessen and in London with John Woolrich, Hommagesquisse, was commissioned by BCMG to mark Pierre Boulez’s visit to that city in 2008. Richard’s compositions have been performed by the London Sinfonietta, BCMG, Britten Sinfonia, the Composers Ensemble, the Brunel Ensemble and the BBC Singers amongst many others. In 2010 his music was featured in the Philharmonia’s Music of Today series, and the same year he wrote Gaming, a substantial chamber work for cello, marimba and piano, to a commission from the New York-based trio Real Quiet.

The host of this 18th Congress is our Academy of Music, world- famous for the excellence of its Zagreb School of Saxophone, established by professor Josip Nochta. In the course of 5 days, in more than 400 events at various locations in the city, top music professionals, students and amateurs will present themselves and meet each other. I am sure that it will be a celebration of music, an opportunity to promote various styles and expressions and to exchange ideas.

The conference brings together 40 speakers from around the globe, presenting on a wide range of topics that demonstrate the rich and multifaceted realm of conducting studies. The discipline of conducting is at the core of a multitude of global musical endeavours, continually shaping musical practices and experiences in substantial ways. Scholars and practitioners have explored, and continue to explore, historical, philosophical, social and psychological aspects of conducting across a wide range of practices; The OCIICSC 2018 aims to bring together these diverse perspectives in the pursuit of a shared and more cohesive knowledge. While professional organizations and educational institutions have worked to develop the field through conducting master-classes and conferences focused on professional development, and academic researchers have sought to explicate various aspects of conducting through focussed studies, researchers and practitioners are rarely in dialogue about these findings and experiences. The OCIICSC 2018 seeks to redress this by continuing the conversation fostered at the 2016 conference, again bringing together practitioners and researchers to participate in productive and scholarly dialogue.   • Graham Fitkin Composer
    GRAHAM FITKIN COMPOSER Graham Fitkin lives and works as a composer in Cornwall. He works with dance, film and digital media alongside concert orchestral and chamber music. He runs his own ensemble of 9 soloists which tours new material each year. Between 1994 and 1996 Graham was resident composer with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra producing five new works. Since then commissions have come from the Halle, BBC Philharmonic, Tokyo Symphony, RSNO, BBC Orchestra of Wales, Athens Camerata, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Nederlands Radio Orchestra etc. He has conducted orchestras in venues from Lincoln Center to South Bank to Aula Magna. Graham has collaborated with many of today’s foremost performers of new music including Powerplant, Nederlands Blazersensemble, Yo-Yo Ma, Kathryn Stott, Will Gregory, Smith Quartet, Piano Circus, Ensemble Bash and London Sinfonietta. A ‘Composer Award’ in 1990 led to a new work for David Massingham Dance. Ever since then Graham has worked frequently with choreographers with recent performances being given by Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company, Wayne McGregor’s Random Dance, Pacific Northwest Ballet, New York City Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Bi-Ma, Sidonie Rochon, Munich Ballet and National Ballet of Portugal. He won the International Grand Prix Music for Dance Award in 2000 and has since won two British Composer awards. Over the past 15 years Graham has directed educational and community projects including 3 UK PRS Composer residencies, 9 regional community projects, university seminars, masterclasses and directed workshops in UK, Japan, Italy and Soweto. Recent works include CIRCUIT, a double concerto for two pianos and orchestra for soloists Kathryn Stott and Noriko Ogawa, PAWN for the Duke Quartet, LENS for Janine Jansen at the Concertgebouw in Holland and TWENTY SIX DAYS for 10:10 at HCMF.
