But, Anne, he's not real! Neither are the airbrushed dudes that keep popping up in my feed. Not that I don't appreciate the pics, ladies! It's only fair! Ok, now that we've established that I'm a total weirdo, let's move on 4. Ok, now that we've established that I'm a total weirdo, let's move on. I always thought Batman was my comic book boyfriend. Brooding, dark, chiseled features Not so much. He's boring. Nice enough, but not exactly what I'd call exciting, Superman / Wonder Woman: Power Couple Volume 1 know? In other words, a permanent resident of the Friend Zone. But after reading this? Dear God, I want to have his little Super-Babies. Ok, maybe not. I've got enough kids already. But I'd definitely want to do the thing that would result in Super-Babies. A lot. So what changed? Well, I'm not even sure I can pin it down, but from the first page, I was just drawn to him. He's so I know, I know! It's unbelievable! It's also true. Somehow, Soule managed to strip away all the things that made Clark so bland, and what was leftover was jet-black hair, blue eyes, a chiseled jaw Move over, Bruce Clark is still Clark. He'll always have the polite mid-western farm boy sensibilities. But at least now he seems more like an actual American I love all you sweet Canucks! You didn't think I'd forgotten about the other half of this Power Couple, did Superman / Wonder Woman: Power Couple Volume 1 Wonder Woman. Someone recently, anyway got her right. And that's the thing, isn't it? If you put anyone other than Superman next to her, they're just going to pale in comparison. Who else can go toe-to-toe with quite literally, at this point the Goddess of War? Because she's the definition of hardcore. And she certainly Superman / Wonder Woman: Power Couple Volume 1 need Superman to rescue her from a burning building, a sinking ship, or a cackling villain. She can take care of herself. And for that reason aloneshe's an awesome role model for all the tiny little fangirls out there. I'm not going to go into any detail about the plot because that's not the reason this volume shines. Doomsday, Zod, Apollo Yeah, those are your villains. But who cares? This is all about Diana and Clark trying to figure out what they are to each other, and how or even if that fits into their 'work'. Do NOT miss this story. I mean it. Highly Recommended. When he says And then she says SUPERMAN/WONDER WOMAN VOL. 1: POWER COUPLE | DC I've picked up every copy of this series, and it is a well-crafted and drawn series. Soule has done an extraordinary job teasing Superman / Wonder Woman: Power Couple Volume 1 the unique characteristics of Superman and Wonder Woman as heroes and people, nicely combining aspects and characters from their individual titles and mythologies. I came into this not quite sure how I'd find. This presented a top-notch story that was equally owned by Wonder Woman and Superman. It felt like both got their fair share of time and each's world was explored. Diana spends time with her sister, takes Clark to meet some of her God relatives and takes a visit home to the Island. Clark is found at work and surrounded by his Kent-identity friends, a good portion of the story takes place in Metropolis and the overall plot of the book centres on returning villains from Superman's past. I like the dynamics between Diana and Superman and am loving them as a couple, Steve Trevor shows up in a scene with the JL of A which reminds us that his relational aftermath problems with WW were based on his immature behaviour, something not likely to happen if Supe and the Amazon ever call it quits. The plot itself was great; we have two of the strongest superheroes alive and they're confronted with their matches in villains with Doomsday and General Zod along with the plans to open up the gates of the "Phantom Zone", Krypton's prison dimension. Im Jahr 1957 zog das Amerika- haus in sein heutiges charakteristisches Gebäude ein und ist dort, nach einer vierjährigen Generalsanierung, seit letztem Jahr wieder zu finden. 2014 gründete sich die Stiftung Bay- erisches Amerikahaus, deren Träger der Freistaat Bayern ist. Heute bietet das Amerikahaus der Münchner Gesellschaft und über die Stadt- und Landesgrenzen hinaus ein vielfältiges Programm zu Themen rund um die transatlantischen Beziehungen – die Vereinigten Staaten, Kanada und Lateinamerika- und dem Schwerpunkt Demokratie an. Signed: 2 Abstract This thesis investigates the lives, movements and performances of dancers in a Romanian urban folk ensemble from an anthropological perspective. Drawing on an extended period of fieldwork in the Romanian city of Timi şoara, it gives an inside view of participation in organised cultural performances involving a local way of moving, in an area with an on-going interest in local and regional identity. It proposes that twenty- first century regional identities in southeastern Europe and beyond, can be manifested through participation in performances of local dance, music and song and by doing so, it reveals that the experiences of dancers has the potential to uncover deeper understandings of contemporary socio-political changes. This micro-study of collective behaviour, dance knowledge acquisition and performance training of ensemble dancers in Timi şoara enhances the understanding of the culture of dance and dancers within similar ensembles and dance groups in other locations. Through an investigation of the micro aspects of dancers’ lives, both on stage in the front region, and off stage in the back region, it explores connections between local dance performances, their participants, and locality and the city.

Davis, Advisor Dr. Jared Gardner Dr. Brian McHale Dr. Rebekah Sheldon 1 Copyrighted by Kristin Michelle Ferebee 2019 2 Abstract The Anthropocene era— a term put forward to differentiate the timespan in which human activity has left a geological mark on the Earth, and which is most often now applied to what J.R. McNeill labels the post-1945 “Great Acceleration”— has seen a proliferation of narratives that center around questions of radioactive, toxic, and other bodily contamination and this contamination’s potential effects. Across literature, memoir, comics, television, and film, these narratives play out the cultural anxieties of a world that is itself increasingly figured as contaminated. In this dissertation, I read examples of these narratives as suggesting that behind these anxieties lies a more central anxiety concerning the sustainability of Western liberal humanism and its foundational human figure. Without celebrating contamination, I argue that the very concept of what it means to be “contaminated” must be rethought, as representations of the contaminated body shape and shaped by a nervous policing of what counts as “human.” To this end, I offer a strategy of posthuman/ist reading that draws on new materialist approaches from the Environmental Humanities, and mobilize this strategy to highlight the ways in which narratives of contamination from Marvel Comics to memoir are already rejecting the problematic ideology of the human and envisioning what might come next.

STUDY CASE: THE ANCIENT HISTORY TEACHINGS FOR CHILDREN REFLECTED IN THE ’80S COMICS Corina Hațegan PhD Student, ”Babeș-Bolyai” University of Cluj-Napoca Abstract: Trying to cheer up its citizens affected by the austerity of the ‘80s and the desire to promote the national-communism ideology of the Romanian Communist Party, propaganda appealed to the victorious moments of the Romanians’ history and iconic historical figures, highlighting their millennial desire of unity, independence, peace etc. Not infrequently, it is noted that propaganda put the communist leader, Nicolae Ceauşescu, into the pantheon of great historical figures of the Romanian people, their features merging with his. Given this, this article tries to analyze how the comics found in the children’s magazines were subjected by the ideological requirements and how the ancient world teachings were transmitted to children, exploiting the very moment of national-communism, the "Dacian moment", "people’s continuity and unity" theory since ancient times. On the background of the continuously increase of nationalism and the overused of topics such as unity, independence and courage, Romanian education, already controlled by the propaganda, included and supported topics such as the above mentioned with the final aim of guiding young people towards socialism. The national-communism1, specific to Ceausescu's regime, has brought to attention the study of history, promoting historical figures as heroes of the nation with the inherent changes in real facts so that history would serve the communist ideology.
