    For immediate release Isaac Julien - Vintage April 22 – June 11, 2016 Opening reception: April 22, 6-8pm Jessica Silverman Gallery is pleased to present “Vintage,” a show of early photographs by Isaac Julien. The exhibition presents three bodies of work - Looking for Langston (1989), Trussed (1996) and The Long Road to Mazatlan (1999-2000). Isaac Julien’s artistic practice is rooted in photography. Looking for Langston is an homage to Harlem Renaissance poet Langston Hughes. When Julien was preparing to make what would become this award- winning work, he studied the photographs of James Van der Zee, George Platt Lynes and Robert Mapplethorpe. His research led not only to a critical response to their work but the creation of a landmark in the exploration of desire and the reciprocity of the gaze. Throughout his career, Julien has worked simultaneously with photographers and cinematographers to make still and moving picture artworks. For Julien, the photographs act as “memorial sites.” Sometimes they reveal facts behind his fictions and explore the creative process, other times they zero in on a portrait or go deeper into a moment of contested history. Whatever the case, Julien is unapologetic about his pursuit of beauty. Visual pleasure is essential to his exploration of subaltern issues and so he often works with advanced pre- and post-production technologies to orchestrate what he calls an “aesthetics of reparation.” The three photographic series included in the exhibition are vintage in several senses of the word. Working with Nina Kellgren (cinematographer) and Sunil Gupta (photographer), Julien shot Looking for Langston in the 1980s in London but set it in the jazz world of 1920s Harlem.

    The urban and cultural climate of Rotterdam changed radically between 1970 and 2000. Opinions differ about what the most important changes were, and when they occurred. Imagine a Metropolis shows that it was first and foremost a new perspective on Rotterdam that stimulated the development of the city during this period. If the Rotterdam of 1970 was still a city with an identity crisis that wanted to be small rather than large and cosy rather than commercial, by 2000 Rotterdam had the image of the most metropolitan of all Dutch cities. Artists and other cultural practitioners – a group these days termed the ‘creative class’ – were the first to advance this metropolitan vision, thereby paving the way for the New Rotterdam that would begin to take concrete shape at the end of the 1980s. Imagine a Metropolis goes on to show that this New Rotterdam is returning to its nineteenth-century identity and the developments of the inter-war years and the period of post-war reconstruction.     1 Het International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) toont de nieuwste onafhankelijke en vernieuwende films uit de wereld en is een platform voor actuele filmkunst, opkomend en gevestigd filmtalent en filmgerelateerde kunst. Naast de vertoning van films steunt het filmfestival actief de totstandkoming van auteurscinema en de deskundigheid van filmtalent, de onafhankelijke filmindustrie en filmkritiek. Een internationale coproductiemarkt (CineMart), een fonds voor filmmakers in ontwikkelingslanden (Hubert Bals Fonds), trainingprojecten (Rotterdam Lab, Trainee Project for Young Film Critics) en debatten voor filmprofessionals maken deel uit van het filmfestival. Behalve via het filmfestival en de internationale activiteiten van Hubert Bals Fonds en CineMart, zorgt de Stichting Filmfestival Rotterdam ervoor dat de kunstzinnige film in Nederland op andere wijzen te zien blijft: via de filmtheaters (Rotterdam en route), op dvd (Tiger Releases) en televisie (NPS Wereldcinema). Op landelijk, regionaal en lokaal niveau brengt IFFR studenten en scholieren in contact met onafhankelijke filmkunst via de Rotterdam Film Course, Meet the Maestro, Filmblik Rotterdam en schoolvoorstellingen.
