Regensburg, Eastern Bavaria & the Bavarian Forest © Lonely Planet 193 Regensburg, Eastern Bavaria & the Bavarian Forest Threading through Eastern Bavaria’s patchwork of bleached gold and green fields, white- washed red-roofed villages, dense forests and vibrant cities is one of the world’s most cel- ebrated waterways, the Danube. This epic river has captured the imagination of poets, painters and composers, and delivered the region power and prosperity. For over two millennia, the Danube has lured Celts, Romans, missionaries, kings, Kaisers, merchants, and, more recently, international cruise goers, to Eastern Bavaria. Even so, its charms remain far removed from the theme-park feel of Neuschwanstein or the see-and- be-seen slopes of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Life is unhurried, the locals are welcoming and genuinely glad to see you, and their traditions haven’t been hijacked by Hollywood or kitsch promoters. The region’s centrepiece, the Unesco-listed city of Regensburg, is a vibrant blend of medi- eval architecture and 21st-century verve, and an ideal starting point for your explorations: Landshut’s proud castle, Straubing’s treasure-packed churches and Passau’s riverside Altstadt (old town) are all easily reached from here. Blanketing the far-eastern edge, the mountains and valleys of the Bavarian Forest shelter a centuries-old tradition of glass-making and pristine hiking and skiing, along with Germany’s oldest national park, the Nationalpark Bayerischer Wald. Combine this with some of the country’s lowest-priced quality lodging, and Bavaria’s east makes an affordable, active and unforgettable getaway. The Mora- vo–Moldanubian Phase involved the overthrusting of the Moldanubian over the Moravian Zone, a process which may have followed the subduction of an intervening oceanic domain (a part of the Rheiic Ocean) beneath a Moldanubian (Armorican) active continental margin. The Moravo–Moldanubian Phase also involved the exhumation of the HP–HT rocks of the Gföhl Unit into the Moldanubian middle crust, represented by the Monotonous and Variegated series. The tectonic emplacement of the HP–HT rocks was accompanied by intrusions of distinct magnesio-potassic granitoid melts (the 335–338 Ma old Durbachite plutons), which contain components from a strongly enriched lithospheric mantle source. Two parallel belts of HP–HT rocks associated with Durbachite intrusions can be distinguished, a western one at the Teplá–Barrandian and an eastern one close to the Moravian boundary.

  • Friedrich Schiller - Poems
Classic Poetry Series Friedrich Schiller - poems - Publication Date: 2012 Publisher: Poemhunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive Friedrich Schiller(10 November 1759 – 9 May 1805) Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller was a German poet, philosopher, historian, and playwright. During the last seventeen years of his life, Schiller struck up a productive, if complicated, friendship with already famous and influential Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe. They frequently discussed issues concerning aesthetics, and Schiller encouraged Goethe to finish works he left as sketches. This relationship and these discussions led to a period now referred to as Weimar Classicism. They also worked together on Xenien, a collection of short satirical poems in which both Schiller and Goethe challenge opponents to their philosophical vision. Life Friedrich Schiller was born on 10 November 1759, in Marbach, Württemberg as the only son of military doctor Johann Kaspar Schiller (1733–96), and Elisabeth Dorothea Kodweiß (1732–1802). They also had five daughters. His father was away in the Seven Years' War when Friedrich was born. He was named after king Frederick the Great, but he was called Fritz by nearly everyone. Kaspar Schiller was rarely home during the war, but he did manage to visit the family once in a while. His wife and children also visited him occasionally wherever he happened to be stationed. When the war ended in 1763, Schiller's father became a recruiting officer and was stationed in Schwäbisch Gmünd. The family moved with him. Due to the high cost of living—especially the rent—the family moved to nearby Lorch.

  • Teaching the Age of Revolutions 2018
Teaching the Age of Revolutions HA Teacher Fellowship Programme 2018 (Secondary) Ben Walsh Week 4: What were the wider consequences of the Napoleonic Wars? For Week 4 the focus was on the impact of the Napoleonic wars. In recent times, scholars have been emphasising the far reaching effects of these wars. The Fellows were asked to consider some points set out by Dr Ben Marsh of the University of Kent about the wars: Confrontation of larger armies than have taken the field for centuries Regime change, bloodshed, and economic malaise feed off one another Mass conscription and participation brings new styles to global warfare Advances made in technology, recruitment, training, and organisation French pioneer artillery and new infantry formations to great effect British and allies struggle to contain Napoleon but avoid knockout until 1812 Von Clausewitz constructs new theory of war on basis of experiences The Fellows were then asked to suggest how they might use the Battle of Waterloo as a hook to help students to think more widely about the context and impact of the Napoleonic Wars: You can do this by focussing on the domestic impact in Britain or look more widely at the European context. Begin by using the knowledge of Waterloo you gained on the residential and broaden your thinking using the suggested resources below. Your plan should focus on the consequences of the Napoleonic Wars. Some of the Fellows considered ways of giving the Battle a wider and deeper context than they might normally consider, drawing on up to sate scholarship to support this: As Mather's article notes, Napoleon had threatened to invade Britain, but this was not the only reason for the British to become involved in a war against the French.

Two grants from the German Academic Exchange Service allowed me to spend considerable time in Germany. The first enabled me to attend a summer seminar at the Universität Regensburg. This experience greatly improved my German language skills and kindled my deep love of Bavaria. The second allowed me to spend a year in various archives throughout Bavaria collecting the raw material that serves as the basis for this dissertation. For this support, I am eternally grateful. The generosity of the German Academic Exchange Service is matched only by that of the German Historical Institute. The GHI funded two short-term trips to Germany that proved critically important.
