2014 Erector 2014 ERECTOR SET FOR CONSTRUCTION ENGINEERING ALUMNI About The Erector Set As students graduated from Iowa State University construction engineering program, they continued to come back to Iowa State to recruit other students. Graduates felt the urge to stay connected to the program, resulting in the first-ever The Erector Set, which was published in summer 1969. So where did the name come from? Tom Jellinger, the first professor-in-charge of construction engineering, one day talked to his wife, Ro, and said he was thinking of calling it “The ConE Newsletter.” She thought about it, and said, “That sounds boring! Why don’t you call it something fun, like The Erector Set!” Construction Engineering Curriculum Denise Wood Co-Editor Christopher Neary Co-Editor Volume XXXXV August 15, 2014 Cover Photo Students of the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) Iowa State chapter gather just prior to the 2013 VEISHEA Parade. Each year, AGC drives construction machinery down the VEISHEA Parade route and hands out candy to youngsters as they pass. AGC recently has captured external regional press in Tennessee and Missouri for their rebuilding work in those areas. This has enhanced Iowa State construction engineering’s reputation as a hard-working, community-oriented program in many areas outside the immediate Iowa State University community. From Chuck Jahren, Construction Engineering Professor-in-Charge e have had a good year. Our undergraduate enrollment is increasing and our high placement rate is attractive to prospective students. Our largest enrollment increases percentagewise have been in our graduate program. In 2010 we had 14 graduate Wstudents, three of which were PhDs. Last semester we had 32 grad students, nine of which were PhDs (a threefold increase in PhD students!). What is causing this big increase in our graduate program? There has been a considerable increase in research activity with many practical topics being investigated. Examples include: how to manage complex construction projects, using big data in design and construction, what project delivery systems are best under what circumstances, use of LiDAR to track construction progress and verify as built conditions, how to economically maintain and rebuild roads, how to use electronic contract documents for local road construction, how to acquire right-of-way more efficiently, how to educate our students so they are ready to be leaders when they graduate, and how to balance online and face-to-face learning for the best student outcomes. Funding comes from Iowa and neighboring states, the National Academies, the Federal Highway Administration, the Construction Industry Institute and our own College of Engineering. Our research project listing (see page 16) gives further details. Our students continue to distinguish themselves in competition with wins at the Associated Schools of Construction Regional Competition, ELECTRI International Foundation Green Energy Challenge, AGC of America Student Chapter of the Year Contest, and others. We have exemplary peer mentors for our learning community, and Beth Hartmann was featured on the 2014 Women Impacting ISU Calendar. Adviser and Learning Community Co-Instructor Kristin Mauro earned her PhD in December 2013 (Congratulations!) and left our group in May as she searches for an opportunity that matches her new qualifications (Best wishes!). More on these items are available in the news articles and letters from the staff; I encourage you to read them all! High enrollments have been a good problem to have across the campus. Iowa State strives to provide classroom space, living arrangements and eating facilities for more and more students. In our Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering, eight faculty members are expected to join next academic year. Several will pursue structural engineering teaching and research, which is good news for our construction engineering students who work to complete their structural engineering sequence of classes. We are looking forward to another good year and eagerly anticipate reading your greetings in this issue of the Erector Set. We hope to see many of you at a game, an alumni reception, or an industry event. Please stop by and see us if you are in Ames. Have a good year and GO CYCLONES! Warm Regards, Charles T. The essay’s specific aim is to transform carnivorous appetites by subverting the integrity of America’s national gastronomic emblem – the hamburger. The article examines how hamburgers are unsustainable food system commodities that exacerbate state-sanctioned climate change, analyzes the underpinnings of ecophobic beef literature—specifically the graphic narrative—that serves as state propaganda, and shows how American comics can alternately promote sustainability nexuses by creating awareness of how food systems impact climate change. Keywords American propaganda; Bob’s Burgers; climate change; Fox Broadcasting Network; hamburger; Industrial Livestock About the Author Sophie Christman earned her Ph.D. in English Literature at SUNY Stony Brook University. ***For Immediate Release*** Media Contact: Jesse P. Cutler JP Cutler Media 510.338.0881 [email protected] GRAMMY® Award-Winning Doug Beavers Releases New Album Art of the Arrangement Featuring Pedrito Martinez, Ray Santos, Oscar Hernández, Jose Madera, Angel Fernandez, Marty Sheller, Gonzalo Grau, Herman Olivera, Luques Curtis and More! New York, NY -- Tuesday, July 18, 2017 -- On his previous release, 2015’s Titanes del Trombón, the GRAMMY® Award-win- ning Doug Beavers -- as the album’s title suggested -- focused on honoring his fellow trombonists and pioneers such as J.J. John- son, Barry Rogers and Slide Hampton. The recording received universal praise with Jazzwax magazine calling it “absolutely hypnotic” and Latin Jazz Network deeming the release a “precious and significant work.” Publications as prestigious as Downbeat, JAZZIZ and Latino Magazine also joined in the chorus, each providing feature space to this magnificent project that paid tribute to some of the unsung masters of an often underappreciated instrument. At the time of the release of Titanes del Trombón, Beavers took note of the fact that many of the great trombonists of the past were also first-rate arrangers, and that steered him toward the music that now comprises his latest release, Art of the Arrangement (ArtistShare, August 25, 2017). The new collection is an homage to the greatest Latin jazz and salsa arrangers of our time, includ- ing Gil Evans, Ray Santos, Jose Madera, Oscar Hernández, Angel Fernandez, Marty Sheller, and Gonzalo Grau. Through- out the history of Latin jazz, and jazz in general, it’s the arrangers who have shaped the music, and quite often their contributions have been overlooked, or ignored altogether.

Likewise, theories of animation often foreground its disruptive potential. Taking an interdisciplinary approach that encompasses girlhood studies, animation studies, and screen studies, this article analyses the representation of the two main girl characters, Tina and Louise Belcher, in the animated sitcom Bob’s Burgers (2011–present). Taking this concept of mutability as its central focus, it argues that animation is an ideal medium for representing girlhood, given its disruptive potential and non-linear capacities, whereby characters are often frozen in time. With no commitment to aging its young female characters, Bob’s Burgers is instead able to construct a landscape of girlhood that allows for endless reversal, contradiction and overlap in the experiences of Tina and Louise, whose existence as animations reveals girlhood as a liminal space in which girls can be one thing and the other – gullible and intelligent, vulnerable and strong, sexual and innocent – without negating their multifarious experiences.

Line-up Randy Brecker - trumpet Dave Kikoski - piano Steve Lapina - bass Steve Johns - drums Ada Rovatti - sax On Stage: 5 Travel Party: 6 Website www.randybrecker.com Biography Randy Brecker has been shaping the sound of Jazz, R&B and Rock for more than three decades. His trumpet and flugelhorn performances have graced hundreds of albums. Randy Brecker's history is as varied as it is distinguished. Born (1945) in Philadelphia to a piano-playing father, Randy spent summers in stage-band camps where he got his earliest experience in ensemble playing. He began playing RandB and funk in local bar bands while in his teens, but at the same time he had an ear for hard bop. In 1966, he moved to New York City. Some of his first gigs upon arriving there were with Clark Terry's Big Band, the Thad Jones/ Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra and the Duke Pearson Big Band with whom he recorded 2 albums. Randy also began his foray into jazz-rock by joining Blood, Sweat and Tears. He worked with BSandT for a year and played on their innovative 1968 debut, Child is Father to the Man.Randy left BSandT to join the Horace Silver Quintet. In 1968, Randy recorded his first album as a leader, Score (re-issued in 1993 on Blue Note), which also featured 19 year-old Michael Brecker on tenor saxophone. After Horace Silver, Randy joined forces with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers before teaming up with brother Michael, Barry Rogers, Billy Cobham, and John Abercrombie to form the seminal fusion group Dreams.
