“The Academy’s students were very well behaved and really made the most of the St Ives trip for GCSE Art and Design students opportunity to learn first-hand about the artwork before them. Winners of the First World War Centenary Battlefield Tour The History department launched a competition this term to take two Year 9 History students on a trip to tour the Battlefields in France and Belgium. Students were asked to complete an informative display piece of work and present their piece to members of the Senior Leadership Team. The short-listed six were Millie Curtis, Joshua Gigg, Amelia Williams, Maisie Moylan Jones, Sophie Jessop and Bethany Hitchen. Judges felt that the standard of work was amazing and showed knowledge and commitment to the subject. Eventually it was decided to award Sophie Jessop and Bethany Hitchen the opportunity to take part in the trip, with Amelia Williams a well-deserved reserve.

Year 10 students took part in the Open Doors RAW outreach programme with University of Exeter and Doorstep Arts. The focus was physical theatre, ensemble work and characterisation and culminated in a performance at the Northcott Theatre in Exeter. Lenard Hernandez, Herbie Sage, Harrison Grainger and Jamie Mcguire represented the Academy in the Regional Finals of the English Schools Table Tennis Butterfly National Team Championships in Bristol. All four players had played incredibly well and they proved to be a tough proposition for the other teams. The team were victorious against Wheelers Lane Technology College, Kings Heath and Birmingham Academy but unfortunately lost their other group PCSA table tennis team reach regional final games.

Ten Tors training

Perfect Weather for Ten Tors Training The Academy’s 35 and 45 mile Ten Tors squads have been out on Dartmoor training for the event. The squads walked over 17km across Dartmoor, visiting a number of tors on route. They endured some cold but sunny conditions making it challenging yet highly enjoyable due to the amazing scenery. Well done to all students for putting in a great effort to complete the distance. Revision Immersion Year13 Learn About 82 students took part in Revision Immersion - additional revision skills and an insight into ways to ensure productive Digital Marketing and quality revision alongside keeping themselves happy, Year 13 ICT students visited Crealy to discuss digital healthy and balanced. Fantastic festival for primaries

Fantastic Festival for Primaries Primary schools were invited to take part in an outdoor education festival which included eight different activities: Alphabet Hunt, Guiding to Safety, Magic Spell, Team Bench, Teamwork Relay, Code Breaker, Stepping Stones and Archery. The sports leaders who were running the event were excellent and were very motivational helping the children! Bibi, student from Preston said “It is very fun! My favourite activity was the relay as I got to help my friends win the race!”

Inspiration from Paralympic Athlete Double Paralympic athlete, David Hill, came to PCSA for a full day of action with a number of students from the Academy. He described his journey of successes, disappointments and perseverance during challenging times, which captured the imagination of the students endorsing the belief that anything is possible. He also spent time with two Year 9 groups, representatives from the Sports Council and finally a two hour session with the Academy’s Gifted and Talented students. They took part in a series of challenges, teamwork activities, personal reflection, planning and even had the opportunity for personalised question and answer sessions. The Academy staged an inclusive Curledge Street Academy dance festival at the Princess Theatre in Torquay giving young Collaton St Mary dance festival people from PCSA and its cluster of primary schools the opportunity to perform in a professional venue. Seven schools took part, having choreographed and practised a dance piece, in response to a theme of ‘Countries and Cultures’.

First Tournament Success for PCSA Chess Team PCSA chess success

Despite being one of the youngest and most inexperienced teams, PCSA’s first ever Chess Club, entered the South West Regional Final of the ECF Team Chess Challenge at Torquay Boys’ Grammar School. The team was made up of Yuri Allasia (captain), Justin Mallari, Leo Mullings, Fynn Richardson and Mason Babbage. Even though they faced stiff competition from Torquay Boys’ Grammar School, of Maths, Stover, and St Cuthbert Mayne, they finished a fantastic 14th out of 21 teams – which is outstanding for such a fledgling squad and they represented the Academy with confidence, fantastic behaviour and great sportsmanship. Interest in CREST Award at a Record High The CREST award has kicked off with a bang this year, seeing its biggest intake of students for the award at 35. Students are taking on a wide range of projects from burning materials and finding out which are the strongest, to being crime investigators and even building model roller-coasters. We have our committed and regular intake that are currently on their Gold CREST award, where they are looking at the best material for sails, examining concentrations of salt and sugar in foods and even building a remote control car. PCSA performs admirably at Rotary Youth Speaks event PCSA Performs Admirably at Rotary Youth Speaks Event Four teams of PCSA students took part in the Bay area finals of Rotary Youth Speaks competition. Each team had to cope with challenges such as timekeeping, speaking to a packed audience and being able to respond to an unseen question. Sadly, we were pipped at the post by last year’s winners St Cuthbert Mayne winning the Intermediate category and ’s team triumphing in the Senior category.
