Amazing Season For TUFC Development As Programme Draws To Close

The Academy’s Torquay United Football Development Programme is enjoying the most successful season since the link was forged in 2007, with the squad on the verge of accomplishing an unprecedented ‘treble’.

Already crowned South West College’s Champions, the squad requires just one point from their remaining two league games to clinch the British College’s Sport South West League title. The squad are all members of the 6th Form made up of made up from a combination of locally sourced players, in conjunction with players acquired from across the entire nation. They have bonded superbly and produced some fantastic performances which has seen them claim some notable victories against South College, Ivybridge Community College and even current ‘League 1A’ Champions Merchants’ Sports Academy from Bristol who were defeated by an amazing 7 – 3 margin in the recent South West Area Cup Final. In pursuit of their third piece of silverware, the U18s Devon County Cup, Paignton must overcome ’s School.

The current squad have developed massively under the expert coaching of Nick Milton and have also benefitted from the input of former Premier League custodian Robbie Herrera. Players who impress are given the opportunity to train and in some cases play for Torquay United’s Youth Apprentices and even senior reserve squads. 2009 graduate Saul Halpin went all the way and became the initiative’s first full professional player.

The programme is open to all Sixth Form applicants showing an interest in football. Enrolled players undertake daily lessons followed by 2 hours of professional football coaching. With all graduates enjoying a 100% BTEC pass rate, it is clear that lessons are being learned in the classroom as well as on the football pitch. Proud course leader Mr Clark beamed “over the past few years, it has been great to see so many students enrol in the programme and take such big strides in developing their education as well as their football ability. We have had graduates who have signed professional football contracts at home and abroad as well as many who have gained places at university or won football scholarships in the USA.”

Positions for the 2013-14 season are still available and all interested students are encouraged to apply via the academy website.

Page 1 A Message from the Principal

We return from the Easter break with some excellent news regarding GCSE results.

Exam Results We have already secured 55% A*- C Grades in GCSE Maths following recent exam results. English Language results stand at 64% A* - C Grades providing the Examination Board do not move the grade boundaries as they did last year. This means our overall 5 or more A* - C grades stand at 49% which is 3% up on last year and very close to our target of 50%. However, we are still very much on the case: staff and pupils are working hard and we are anticipating further improvements and hope to exceed our target.

Leadership Team We have recently recruited to the Leadership Team at the Academy. I am delighted to report that Mr Jason Trevarthen has been promoted to Deputy Principal and Mrs Vicki Rogers from Northfield School in Stockton-on-Tees has been appointed Assistant Principal. Mr Trevarthen takes up his post as of 1st June and Mrs Rogers from the 1st September.

‘Macbeth’ Performance and Workshop Trip On the 13th March, 46 students from Year 7 – 11 ventured to Studio 1, Dartington Hall for a performance and workshop of Shakespeare’s famous play ‘Macbeth.’ This is what their teacher said:

“Not quite knowing what to expect we were ushered in to a dark room with a raised stage in the middle. We sat on mats around the stage and waited for it to begin…

This is what the pupils said, “It was awesome! It had lots of props to make it feel real and they made fake blood for when Macbeth killed King Duncan, Banquo and Macduff’s children. It looked really realistic and you could feel the blood come on you. All of the stuff they used for the lighting made it feel really scary and on the part where the witches came in, it felt like they were creeping around you but you could not see them.’

We were led through the story by the Porter, who explained what was going on throughout the play. We witnessed fights and betrayals, were splattered with blood and had a ringside seat to watch the madness and mayhem. The performance was followed by a workshop where students could question the ac- tors in character and then the actors themselves. Some excel- lent student questions ranged from ‘How do you make the fake blood?’ to ‘Macbeth, how do you feel about Lady Macbeth after the murder of King Duncan?’ The students thoroughly enjoyed the day and took away from it not just a better understanding of the play, but an awareness that Shakespeare can be fun, wild and dangerous.”

insight into the skills required to run a successful Sports Literacy Project radio station and for making the Sky Sports Literacy project the talk of Torbay! Visits Palm FM

On Thursday 14th February, the Sky Sports Lit- eracy Pupils from Year 9 finished off their pro- ject in fine style by paying a visit to local radio station; Palm FM.

The group were shown around by Head of News, Corrina Hunt and were even allowed to gate- crash DJ Colin Leslie's studio to watch as he broadcast his daytime show live across Torbay.

After discussing the importance of developing their key literacy skills with some more of the station's presenters, the pupils then recorded several 'vox-pop' style interview clips describing their personal project experiences. These clips were later edited and included as part of the top local news story about the project during each Palm FM news bulletin the following Saturday.

Our thanks go to Corrina and all of the staff at Palm FM for providing us with such an interesting

Year 10s secure place in next round of Devon Cup with Convincing Win

The Year 10 Football squad ran out 5-0 winners over Stoke Dameral Community College which sees them progress through to the next round of the Devon cup.

Fifteen minutes in, Owen Mosely kept a cool head to slot the ball past the stranded keeper, which was quickly followed by another goal from captain Kieran Parkin via an inch perfect cross from Kingsley Burrows.

Stoke Dameral did threaten on the break, but again they found Jordan Hoskins, Jack Appleby- Edwards and Josh Jowsey in terrific form, sniff- ing out any chance of a goal scoring opportunity. Utility player Sam Ballie once again showed his outstanding ability to adapt into playing any position with a confident display in the home goal. The second half saw Paignton really dominate the game with further goals from Ciannon Breen and a rocket from Owen Scott.

But the best was saved for last when Jack Appleby-Edwards burst into the box to execute a side bicycle kick, which Emile Heskey himself would be proud of. Congratulations to all of the squad.

Did you know that just registering your son or daughter for Free School Meals means that the Academy gets extra money?

Register now to make sure we don’t all miss out!!

The Government is giving money to schools to help children from lower income families do their very best. This funding is called a ‘Pupil Premium’. For every student registered the Academy gets £900 this year.

If you are registered for Free School Meals you could also get help with costs of Out of School Activities and Clubs, Activities Week and the Academy’s Holiday Programme.

Please register to make sure your son or daughter and others in their class don’t miss out.

How Does it work?

1. First, check if you qualify – it is not just if you are unemployed, so please look at the list below. 2. Registering is really quick and easy – if you think you qualify, contact the Academy for an application form. 3. If you want your child to have a free, healthy meal at lunchtime that’s great – they will get the free meal (saving you more that £350 a year), extra benefits and the school gets £600 extra. 4. If you don’t want your child to have the school meals they can continue as normal – as long as you qualify and are registered, the school still gets £600 extra.

Do you Qualify?

You can register your child for Free School Meals if you get any of these benefits:

 Income Support  Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance  Income-related Employment and Support Allowance  Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999  The Guarantee element of State Pension Credit  Child Tax Credit, provided they are not entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual income (as assessed by HM Revenue & Customs) that does not exceed £16,190  Working Tax Credit 'run-on' - the payment someone may receive for a further four weeks after they stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit

No one will know you have registered and it will not affect any other benefits you are claiming.

Please talk to us about registering your child today.

Pupils can also register for Free School Meals if they get any of these benefits in their own right. Come and talk to us if you’re not sure.
