VDOE Career and Technical Education Newsletter May Issue RECOGNITION FBLA STATE LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE The Virginia Future Business Leaders of American (FBLA) State Leadership Conference was held in Reston, Virginia, on April 8 and 9, 2011. Over 1,400 students attended the conference and participated in leadership training and competitive events to showcase their skills in the Business and Information Technology (B&IT) curriculum. Two hundred and thirty six Business and Information Technology teachers/advisors attended the conference. The conference hosted over 50 events that were judged by local business representatives from the Northern Virginia area, with over 100 Virginia FBLA members now eligible for national competition. A highlight of the conference was the opening session and a heart- warming rendition of the Star Spangled Banner from two members of the Southside Baptist FBLA Chapter. 2011 FORD/AAA STUDENT AUTO SKILLS COMPETITION, MID-ATLANTIC REGIONAL FINALS The Virginia state competition was held on April 15-16, 2011. The team that drove their vehicle across the finish line with the most faults corrected combined with their written test score were declared the winner. The winning team will advance to the final phase of the competition at Ford Motor Company’s World Headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan on June 12-14, 2011. The top three teams were: 1st Place—Fauquier High School, Instructor: Scott Freeman 2nd Place—Spotsylvania Career and Technical Center, Instructor: Frank Eberhardt 3rd Place—Charlottesville-Albemarle Technical Education Center, Instructor: Paul Johnson VIRGINIA ASSOCIATION OF MARKETING TEACHER OF THE YEAR AREA FINALISTS SELECTED The area finalists for VAME (Virginia Association of Marketing Teachers) Teacher of the Year have been selected. Eastern Area: Sarah Noble, Grassfield High School, Northern Area: Sandi Tucker, Dominion High School, and Western Area: Janet Jennings, Eastern Montgomery High School. A team of three retired marketing teachers will visit each location and will judge each of the candidates in three areas: Instruction, Coordination, and Program Administration/Community Relations. The final state winner will be announced at the VAME annual conference, August 3-5, in Virginia Beach. 1 BUSINESS/COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS LOUDOUN GOVERNOR’S CAREER AND TECHNICAL ACADEMY In response to the growing workforce shortage in the health care industry, a unique partnership was created with Claude Moore Charitable Foundation, Inova Health System, and Loudoun County Public Schools to develop the Claude Moore Healthcare Academies within the Loudoun Governor’s Career and Technical Academy. This three-year high school program provides students with an opportunity to earn dual enrollment college credits in the following health sciences pathways: Medical laboratory technology Pharmacy technology Practical nursing Radiologic technology This program is made possible through an estimated $3,000,000 investment from the Claude Moore Charitable Foundation. The Foundation provided funding for the initial development of the program and a new state-of-the art training facility housed at the Cornwall Medical Pavilion. This training facility consists of four instructional classrooms and a laboratory that replicates hospital facilities and includes radiology equipment, pharmacy dispensing equipment, and a typical hospital room complete with anatomic mannequins. GRANT OPPORTUNITIES VIRGINIA ASSOCIATION OF MARKETING EDUCATORS (VAME) CREATIVE TEACHING GRANT – DUE NO LATER THAN JUNE 1, 2011 The purpose of this grant is to recognize and assist VAME members* in developing and implementing creative classroom projects. *To be eligible, teachers must be a VAME member by April 1 of the current year. One grant is available in each of the three areas: Eastern, Northern, and Western. The maximum amount awarded will be $250 for each area. The selection criteria include creativity, innovation, benefits to students and expected educational outcomes of the project. Please complete the application form and submit it to Richard Totten no later than June 1, 2011. The grants for each area will be awarded at the 2011 VAME conference. TECHNOLOGY AND ENGINEERING IN STEM EDUCATION (TESE) - Requirements for Middle School STEM Grant Participation The Virginia Space Grant Consortium has awarded a professional development grant for a limited number of middle school technology education teachers in July 2011. A primary Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) goal is to assist students with mathematics achievement. The middle school population must be primarily underserved students in one or more of the categories of economically disadvantaged, minority students, females, and academically disadvantaged. The materials are from Engineering by Design (EbD) and NASA. It is intended for middle school teachers of Introduction to Technology Invention and Innovation, and Technological Systems. The professional development will be held on three consecutive days, July 12-14, 2011, at Carver Middle School in Chesterfield County. To be considered for the professional development grant, teachers must commit to: attending the entire three-day session from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day; teaching the materials during the fall 2011 semester; and administering a pre- and post- test to the students.
