With the onset of the e-Rundown, there will be some gradual changes to the Rundown that will allow the electronic copy to be more user friendly. Unfortunately, not many of these changes will make the November issue but look forward to receiving an electronic copy of the Rundown.

The 35th Anniversary Celebration and Volunteer Appreciation Party took place on top of the Ocean View Fishing Pier. It was a beautiful day perfect for lounging about on the deck over the restaurant. Pictures from the celebration are throughout this Rundown. The celebration was open to all and each volunteer invitee received a Tidewater Strider memorabilia clock. The day was different for most because the volunteers were allowed to just have a good time and be waited on by the restaurant staff. Good Food, Good Drinks, Good Friends. Be there next year.

As Always, please let me know if you have any comments about the Rundown, Dick Brothers, Bill Bailey, Dave McDonald and Ada Mike Fuller all enjoying the sunshine at the annual volunteer’s celebration. - 3 - The RUNDOWN - November 2007 TIDEWATER STRIDERS 2007 RACE SCHEDULE Date Race Name Distance Location Race Director 3-Nov Race for Breath 5k Oceanfront Kelly Burke Jennings [email protected] 10-Nov Town Center 5K Town Center VB Tom Purcell/Mary O’Neil tom.purcell@towncenter.fi tness.com 17-Nov AAU Cross Country National Qualifi er VB Sportsplex Evie Foster 431-1169 [email protected] 17-Nov Cape Henry Duathlon & RunFest (5k & 10M)** Fort Story Mitch Broudy [email protected] 22-Nov Turkey Trot 10K & 1M Mt Trashmore Dan Edwards, 495-3551 [email protected] 1-Dec Army/Navy 10k (AM) Fort Story Fort Story MWR [email protected] 1-Dec Jingle Bell Run (PM) 5K Old Dominion Univ Arthritis Foundation,456-1119 [email protected] 1-Dec AAU Nat’l XC Sportsplex Buddy Wheeler VB Gov 8-Dec Santa Shuffl e 5K Botanical Gardens Jeannie Martin, 488-9161 [email protected] 15-Dec Davis Corner Rescue Squad 5K TBD Sharon Brown, 499-5506 [email protected] ** Non-Strider event but some support provided by Tidewater Striders Race Forecast by Your Race Committee 2007 Running Grand Flyers for the following races will Thursday, November 22rd – 30th Annual be available on the website or in the Turkey Trot 10K & 1-Mile at Mt. Lori Sherwood

Please give a brief personal history I was born in California, but have lived in Virginia since 3 years old. I am single. I am employed at RRMM Architects where I have been for 14 years, working in the accounting department. I have been walking and/or running (well, I call it trotting) for a little over 6 years (currently on the injured list). My 3rd race ever was a marathon, and I have done 3 so far, but I enjoy ½ marathons the most. I have no children, but I am helping raise my sister’s 6 yr old daughter and twin 7 month old baby girl and boy while my sister is serving in the Air Force in Iraq.

What would you like to accomplish during your term on the board? I would like to help other Board members that are race walkers to bring awareness to those that are unfamiliar with the walking category.

What areas of the Striders interest you and why? I am a behind the scenes person. I am confi dent that you could use my time and effort into any administrative position to help ease the burden off of anyone needing help. For instance, I could help with the membership perhaps inputting information in database, updating addresses and/or e-mail when necessary, printing labels, etc.

During the past year I have become more involved with the races and volunteering and have met many members who are not only friendly but interested in getting you involved with the club, and I would be very excited to be on the Board and be a part of that.

Jean Phelan

Personal Background: I’m seeking re-election to the Striders Board. For the past 2 years I have been Secretary of our club. These free events for Strider’s members are a great way to meet fellow runners/walkers.

The fi nal nominee is Diane Zinn, her profi le can be read on page 8. - 7 - The RUNDOWN - November 2007

Diane Zinn I was born in the beautiful mountains of West Virginia, and then lured to the calming ocean of Virginia Beach 7 years ago. I grew up on a farm in WV where I had to walk almost every place; the store, church, and school (yes through the snow and even fl ood waters one year). Over the years, I have accumulated the following: three children – my oldest, a son is an attorney in Baltimore, MD, my middle daughter recently gave me a new granddaughter and the youngest daughter lives and works right here in Virginia Beach, also 2 lovely granddaughters and 3 terrifi c grandsons.

After arriving in Virginia Beach, I attended TCC to fi nish my IST degree at night. I have been employed as Development and Marketing Assistant at St. Mary’s Home for Disabled Children since last September. I’ve worked since the age of 10 and just now realized that you don’t get what you don’t ask for. Now I have the yearning to Above is new Strider, Nancy Briggs at the Hog Jog take an active role of training for my second half marathon and becoming a part of 5k in Smithfi eld. Being a “walker” has exposed me to the need for walker divisions in races and I will help with the inclusion of these divisions. I work with databases daily and could be an asset on the membership committee. I would hope to involve the members more in some way by collecting their interests, hobbies or specialties and using that info to recruit volunteers and more members. I also enjoy working at the races and being a part of the excitement.

I would love to be a part of the Tidewater Striders Board of Directors.

You can! Consider making a personal contribution to the new Road Runners Club of America’s Kids Run the Nation fund. Just introduced this year, the Kids Run the Nation initiative is the RRCA’s long-term investment in promoting running as a signifi cant opportunity to address the growing obesity epidemic with our youth. The fund dollars will be used to develop youth running materials for parents, children and teachers. As well, the fund will provide grants to events, schools and running clubs – like the Tidewater Striders – for use in their youth running programs. For more information on this fund, visit: http://www.rrca.org/programs/kids/ .

Your support – no matter how big or small – can help ensure this effort has a positive impact on our youth. There are two ways you can contribute:

TEAM Survivor Virginia Beach By Janet Dobson I’d like to tell you about something new and exciting that has come to Virginia Beach and the Hampton Roads area. It’s called TEAM Survivor Virginia Beach (TSVB) and is the newest affi liate to join forces with the National Association of TEAM Survivor. Affi liates provide group exercise and support programs for women who have a present or past diagnosis of cancer. These primarily free programs, which combine fun fi tness activities with emotional support, are an important part of the ongoing healing process for women living with cancer. Women of all ages and fi tness levels and in all stages of cancer treatment and recovery are welcome. TEAM Survivor was founded in 1995 as a grassroots program of the Danskin Women’s Triathlon Series. The program was conceived to provide a fi tness plan for female caner survivors in Austin, TX and Seattle, WA to train for and participate in their fi rst triathlon. Following the success of the survivors in the triathlons, the programs expanded to deliver year-round support and fi tness opportunities for cancer patients and survivors. Since that time, the National Association of TEAM Survivor has grown to more than 20 local Affi liates nationwide that promote exercise opportunities for all women affected by cancer. TSVB will participate in the Shamrock Marathon Weekend March 15 & 16, 2008. Participants will choose to walk, walk/run or run either the 8k , half or full marathon. Weekly training schedules will be provided along with weekly group training. Throughout the training period there will potluck dinners and socials, mini-seminars on subjects such as fi tness and nutrition, spa days, and much more fun, social activities. TSVB will have its’ offi cial kickoff November 18 with a “walk & talk” followed by a luncheon. If you are a woman living with cancer and would like to improve your strength and fi tness, increase your confi dence, and enjoy the support provided by working out with women who share similar experience and goals, or would just like more information, contact me at [email protected] or 757-464-4068. TIDEWATER STRIDERS BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING Minutes for 10 September 2007 The meeting was called to order at 6:30 pm at the Virginia Neptune Festival offi ce. Board members present were: Rich, Dan, Don, Tommy, Dwight, and Anita. OFFICER REPORTS President: Rich thanked Jean Phelan for her coordination of the annual picnic, Steven Durrant and Dwight Kane for the Strider Mile, and Anita Keegan for the RNR Half Expo booth. Vice President: No report. Treasurer: Dan presented the current income/expense statements. OLD BUSINESS None NEW BUSINESS Kids Run the Nation: Tabled until next meeting. E-Rundown: The paper Rundown is expensive to produce, time intensive, and the Post Offi ce imposes new rules month to month. A motion was made and unanimously approved to move to the next stage of implementing the E-Rundown by sending both paper and electronic versions to members beginning with the November issue. This transition will be publicized during the transition period (yet to be determined). One-Hour Postal Racewalk: A motion was made and unanimously approved to provide up to $250 to support the event this December. This nationwide racewalk allows participants to compete without having to travel to a central location and be ranked nationally and internationally with those in an individual’s age group. COMMITTEE REPORTS Race: Help is needed for the 22 Sep ODU event and the Neptune Festival 8K packet pickup. There are no signifi cant changes to the Fall schedule. Turkey Trot permit issues are still being worked. Walking: Expo booth volunteers reported a great deal of interest by potential walkers. Grand Prix: The standings have been updated to the RNR Half results. Teams: Shamrock has team events and we have team entries. Youth: Search for a coach continues. Membership: No report. Volunteers: The volunteer recognition and 35th Anniversary event has been tentatively been scheduled for 14 October (subsequently to 21 October).

So this is what they do.... Alright little buggy riders, the secret is out. Your parents have always suspected that you were just chilling out while they were running hard but here’s proof as Kathryn Daniels appears to be waiting for a frozen drink. Run faster, Mike. Actually Mike has dropped 10 minutes in his carriage pushing 5k in the last year. So obviously, Kathryn is a great coach! Below is Edwin Fabila fi nishing up the 8k at the Neptune Festival.

Chicago LaSalle Bank Marathon Personal Best... A New Meaning by Esther Corpus October 7, 2007 - Chicago, Ill. Roy Blakeburn 5:30:28 (Pacer) At the recent Chicago Marathon held on Oct. 7th, and my fourth marathon, I aimed to Esther Corpus 4:21:53 fi nish in 5 hrs. and 30 minutes, but was listed a fi nisher with a chip time of 4:21:53. How Amber Giancola 5:38:08 could this be possible, you might ask when the heat index reached 105 degrees ? It so Ezequias Lermaz 5:12:24 happened that I was among those people who felt forced off the course even though we Mark Manny 3:49:55 might have fi nished otherwise. Due to the rising heat index and higher In between markers 16 and 18 miles, I heard an announcement on a bullhorn that if we than expected temperatures, LaSalle had not reached the midway point in three and a half hours, we would be diverted to Bank Chicago Marathon Executive another course and not be allowed to fi nish. My chip time proved I reached halfway in Race Director Carey Pinkowski and 2:54:13, but was barricaded from continuing. There were confl icting announcements, and Medical Director Dr. George Chiampas, rumors started fl ying throughout the course, such as getting “arrested by the police” if in cooperation with city offi cials, they saw us running. I witnessed fi rehose sprays aimed at people who crossed or removed implemented a contingency plan, as a the barricades. Police on bicycles tried to stop people from running, yelling “ the race is precautionary measure, to effectively over ! “ close the marathon course at the halfway point. Pandemonium started when people were looking for water stations, and couldn’t fi nd any in the fi rst 6 miles. I saw people running off the course to nearby fountains in the park for The following runners DNF. a quick dip. When we saw the fi rst water station, people literally stopped; they were not All times at 25K: only consuming water, but also bathing with it. My fuel belt, which carried my “supplies” Ann Grandy 3:47:05 ( gatorade, band-aids,tylenol, jelly beans and packets of salt ) saved me the aggravation Katie Humphrey 3:32:15 and a few minutes, since I didn’t have to stop. I took my “shower” from the mist that came Steph Manny 2:27:42 out of fi re hydrants. Robert Rantanen 2:51:56 Julie Risney 3:32:14 Hundreds of us running on the abbreviated course decided we would fi nish, and somehow, Danielle Smith 3:43:33 amidst the chaos, we did. In the excessive heat, even running 19.5 miles, I received my Sherry Waters 3:32:13 fi nisher’s medal. I wore it proudly at the restaurant I dined in with my family and on my Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon fl ight back home. October 7, 2007 - Milwaukee, Wis. Initially, I was disappointed for not being “allowed” to complete the course, until I Larry McFarland 4:59:14 came to realization that someone died trying to fi nish the race, another 300 ended up in Joseph Schnurbusch 4:08:10 hospitals, and 10,000 people who entered but didn’t run at all. With determination and Ronald Stites 4:23:48 divine intervention, I ran the distance I was allowed, comfortably and injury-free. I know Army Ten-Miler I gave it my best effort no matter how far they let me go. It was truly a personal best. October 7, 2007 - Washington, D.C. The track will open at 7:00 am; 1st Heat starts at 8:00 am This is a National One Hour Postal Racewalk Event on the track that allows walkers the opportunity to see how their times compare to other walkers from around the country. Additionally, it gives walkers a benchmark time to compare themselves against in their racing distances in the future. Results will be submitted to the Shore Athletic Club of New Jersey, the national sponsor and coordinator of the event. Complete national results will be compiled, published, and mailed to each individual competitor by the Shore AC of NJ. Cost: $15.00 per individual walker. This covers the cost the “Shore AC” imposes on each individual racewalker and helps offset the costs involved in using Tallwood High School. Receipt of payment and the completed entry form prior to December 22 is preferred. However, individuals may register and pay by check or cash prior to 8 am on December 22 at Tallwood High School. It is anticipated that two, one hour heats, will be conducted. Individuals walking in the first heat must remain available to count and record lap times for the second heat walkers. It is recommended that prior to arriving walkers arrange with another walker to record lap times during one heat and compete in the following heat, or visa-versa. THE USATF COMPETITIVE RULES OF RACEWALKING WILL BE FOLLOWED. A minimum of three (3) USATF certified racewalk judges will be assigned to judge the racewalkers in each heat. One caution (yellow paddle) may be given by a judge to walkers observed to be in danger of ceasing to comply with the rules of racewalking during their heat. Failure to (1) maintain contact with the ground at all times, and/or (2) failure to insure that the advancing leg is straightened immediately upon contact with the ground, and maintained straightened until the body passes over the leg, will result in warnings (red cards) being issued by the judges. Walkers receiving three warnings (1 red card per judge) will be disqualified and their names will not be submitted to the Shore AC for inclusion in the national results. An air horn will be used to start each heat. A digital clock, located in the vicinity of the starting line, will display the time. Each walker’s lap recorder may use the digital clock, or their own digital clock/watch to record the time of each of the walker’s laps. When five minutes remain to be walked, each walker will receive a marker, with their name on it, to carry during the remaining time. A whistle blast will indicate when there is one minute remaining. The air horn will sound when the hour time has elapsed. Walkers will drop their markers at their position on the track when hearing the final air horn blast. Officials will then measure – using a measuring wheel - and record the distance of each walker’s final lap. ------Make $15 Checks Payable to the Tidewater Striders and mail to: 211 – 66th Street, Virginia Beach, VA 23451-2040 Race Director: Steve Durrant – [email protected], Phone 422-6811 or 615-2452 Name(First,MI,Last)______Address(#&Street,City,Zip)______Phone #______Email Address______
