DOSSIER DE PRESSE Editorial 16ème FESTIVAL INTERNATIONAL DE CINÉMA ASIATIQUE DE TOURS DOSSIER DE PRESSE Editorial Création/transmission Le cinéma plus encore que tous les autres arts, parce qu'il est enfant des fêtes foraines et des recherches formelles, est toujours écartelé entre la reconnaissance populaire et la création artistique. Toucher le plus grand nombre sans vendre son âme au diable reste souvent l'idéal de tout artiste. Rester maître de son art sans trop de compromis n'est pas un problème nouveau, la star du cinéma bengali y était déjà confrontée dans Le Héros de Satyajit Ray. Le réalisateur de Director's Cut de Park Joon-Bum doit mener un dur combat pour ne pas céder aux pressions. La création artistique peut sauver des vies comme celle de Charulata (S. Ray), en questionner d'autres comme celles de George Orwell (Une histoire birmane) ou du metteur en scène de théâtre de The Undying Dream we Have. Le Chant du phénix, film testament (le dernier), du réalisateur chinois Wu Tian Ming nous parle de musique mais aussi de cinéma : celui de la 4ème génération, dont il était le fer de lance, trop souvent oubliée, effacée par les réalisateurs de la 5ème génération : Zhang Yimou, Chen Kaige... Le festival cette année fait la part belle au cinéma coréen et comme d'habitude aux inédits et à de très nombreuses avant-premières. Vous pourrez y rencontrer de nombreux invités : Yolande Moreau, Zoltan Mayer, Jinsei Tsuji, Alain Mazars, Freddy Nodolny Poustochkine, Frank Ternier, Kazuo Yamaki, Maho, Leonardo Haertling... Le prix du jury (La Toile de lumière, oeuvre de Guy Romer) sera décerné ainsi que votre prix, celui du public lors de la soirée de clôture le mardi 24 mars 2015. Au XIIème les Rois-Démons terrorisent toute la Chine. Pour vaincre ces monstres, il faudrait avoir le courage de cent tigres, la force de mille buffles, la ruse d'autant de serpents... et beaucoup de chance. Le jeune prince Duan n'a que ses illusions romanesques et de l'embonpoint. Zhang-le-Parfait n'a que son bâton de moine et tout un tas de proverbes incompréhensibles. La petite mendiante Pei Pei n'a que son bagout et son grand appétit. Ils ne savaient pas qu'il était impossible de vaincre les Rois-Démons... Alors ils l'ont fait. Une adaptation libre du classique chinois Au bord de l'eau. Pascal Morelli est un réalisateur et scénariste français né en 1961 à Paris (France). Il s'est formé aux Beaux-Arts avant de travailler dans la bande dessinée et la publicité. De Los Angeles à Tokyo, il travaille sur des story-boards et realise des dessins animes pour la television Ghosbusters, Alf, Hello Kitty... Producteur du dessin anime The Specialists pour MTV, il prend en charge la direction artistique de divers projets multimedia. Il realise le dessin anime Busy world Richard Scarry (Paramount), Arsene Lupin (France Animation), Calamity Jane. Passionne de Hugo Pratt, il realise Corto Maltese, La Cour secrete des arcanes (2002 Gebeka Films) et des series televisuelles adaptant d’autres albums (production Ellipsanime). C'est alors qu'un bébé panda et son papa, échappés du zoo, pénètrent dans la maison ... et s'y installent. Les deux grands maîtres de l'animation japonaise nous offrent, avec l'un de leurs premiers films, un univers riche, inventif, rempli d'humour et de fraîcheur. Une rareté à découvrir impérativement ! Hayao Miyazaki est né en 1941 à Tokyo. C'est un mangaka, un réalisateur de films d'animation japonais et le cofondateur du Studio Ghibli. Presque inconnu en Occident en dehors des cercles d’amateurs d’animation et de manga jusqu’à la sortie internationale de Princesse Mononoké en 1999. Miyazaki commence sa carrière en avril 1963 comme intervalliste au studio Toei. L’année 1965 marque le début d’une longue collaboration avec Takahata. En 1971, Miyazaki quitte Toei et rejoint Isao Takahata et Yōichi Kotabe aux studios A- Pro4. Ses films rencontrent aujourd’hui un grand succès partout dans le monde. Né à Ise (Japon) en 1935, Isao Takahata étudie la littérature française à l'université de Tōkyō. Il découvre ainsi les poèmes de Jacques Prévert, mais aussi son travail avec Paul Grimault, par exemple sur le scénario du Roi et l'Oiseau d'après La Bergère et le ramoneur de Hans Christian Andersen. Sa notoriété en Occident vient principalement de son film Le Tombeau des lucioles, sorti en 1988. Celui-ci se rêve écrivain alors qu'il vivote de petits travaux de commande. Ce retour vers les années de collège n'a rien de nostalgique : violences, harcèlements, élèves martyrisés et élèves bourreaux décrivent une vision cauchemardesque de la société coréenne. Le film est un véritable « coup de poing ». P3 Yeun Sang-Ho est né à Séoul, en Corée du Sud, en 1978. Après son premier court métrage D-Day en 2000, son second court métrage The Hell remporte le prix Asian Ghost au Festival Short Shorts. Son court métrage suivant, Love is Protein, est ensuite projeté en compétition au Festival International du Court Métrage Curtocircuito à Santiago de Compostela en 2009, et invité la même année au Festival Mauvais Genre, à Tours. The King of Pigs est son premier long métrage. Mercredi 18 mars – 19h30 – Ouverture du Festival Hill of Freedom (Avant-première – Compétition) Corée du Sud – 2015 – 1h06, de Hong Sang-Soo, avec Ryo Kase, Sori Moon, Younghwa Seo Hill of Freedom est le nom d’un café dans lequel une jeune femme, Kwon, de retour du Japon, se voit remettre un paquet de lettres d’un homme qu’elle a autrefois aimé. Ces lettres, lues dans le désordre, donnent lieu à un véritable puzzle narratif, un passionnant jeu de piste à la fois clair et mystérieux, humoristique et émouvant. Hong Sang-Soo, né le 25 octobre 1960 à Séoul, est un réalisateur et scénariste sud-coréen. En 1982, après avoir étudié la mise en scène à l'université de Chungang, à Séoul, il part étudier aux États-Unis. De retour en Corée du Sud, il travaille comme réalisateur pour la télévision avant de se lancer au cinéma. Il tourne en 1996 son premier film, Le Jour où le cochon est tombé dans le puits qui connaît P4 immédiatement un certain succès critique et public. En 2000, Hong Sang-Soo revient avec le film au titre provocateur La Vierge mise à nu par ses prétendants. Fort de sa réputation, Hong Sang-Soo dispose de moyens plus confortables pour son quatrième opus, Turning Gate, coproduit par Marin Karmitz et interprété par trois stars locales. Dans cette comédie mélancolique, son plus important succès commercial, notamment auprès du public de Corée, le réalisateur affine son style tout en restant fidèle à sa thématique. Dans la continuité, les éléments caractéristiques de son cinéma se retrouvent dans La femme est l'avenir de l'homme. Depuis 2008, il enseigne à l'université de Konkuk à Séoul où il anime un atelier consacré au scénario et un à la mise en scène.

No surprises there. Born a hundred years ago in 1921 in an extraordinarily talented Bengali Brahmo family, Satyajit Ray carried forward his illustrious legacy with astonishing ease and finesse. Both his grandfather Upendra Kishore RayChaudhuri and his father Sukumar RayChaudhuri are extremely well known children’s writers. It is said that there is hardly any Bengali child who has not grown up listening to or reading Upendra Kishore’s stories about the feisty little bird Tuntuni or the musicians Goopy Gyne and Bagha Byne.

Reviewed by Sakti Sengupta (Asian-American Film Theater) Published on H-Asia (March, 2009) Commissioned by Sumit Guha Indian Neo-realist cinema Satyajit Ray, one of the three Indian cultural icons besides the great sitar player Pandit Ravishankar and the Nobel laureate Rabindra Nath Tagore, is the father of the neorealist movement in Indian cinema. Much has already been written about him and his films. In the West, he is perhaps better known than the literary genius Tagore. The University of California at Santa Cruz and the American Film Institute have published (available on their Web sites) a list of books about him. Popular ones include Portrait of a Director: Satyajit Ray (1971) by Marie Seton and Satyajit Ray, the Inner Eye (1989) by Andrew Robinson. A majority of such writings (with the exception of the one by Chidananda Dasgupta who was not only a film critic but also an occasional filmmaker) are characterized by unequivocal adulation without much critical exploration of his oeuvre and have been written by journalists or scholars of literature or film. What is missing from this long list is a true appreciation of his works with great insights into cinematic questions like we find in Francois Truffaut's homage to Alfred Hitchcock (both cinematic giants) or in Andre Bazin's and Truffaut's bio-critical homage to Orson Welles.

Abstract A general understanding of dress categories it as a social, cultural construct, however it adds a unique perspective to its symbolic and semiotic dimension if interpreted in the sphere of film studies. Sadgati (1981) filmed by Satyajit Ray for Doordarshan was originally written in Hindi by Premchand in 1931.
