Shri Shashi Kapoor was the Chief Guest for the inaugural function. Indian Film Festivals were organized under CEPs/Special Festivals abroad at Israel, Beijing, Shanghai, South Africa, Brussels and Germany. Indian films also participated in different International Film Festivals in 18 countries during the year till December, 2006. The film RAAM bagged two awards - one for the best actor and the other for the best music in the 1st Cyprus International Film Festival. The film ‘MEENAXI – A Tale of Three Cities’ also bagged two prizes—one for best cinematography and the other for best production design. Films Division participated in 6 International Film Festivals with 60 films, 4 National Film Festivals with 28 films and 21 State level film festivals with 270 films, during the period 1-04-06 to 30-11-06. Infrastructure plays a very important role in promoting economic growth of a country and thereby contributes to the reduction of economic inequality, poverty and distress in a country. Therefore, the Government should always take supplemental investment initiatives in transport, power, irrigation, markets and warehousing, communications, education, health and family welfare as these factors play a strategic role in the development process of any State or Country as a whole. The State government has taken various steps like building its own IT City, construction of Lucknow Metro and infrastructure policies like building Lucknow-Agra Expressway and investment for infrastructure in the last 5 years. The government understands what is it that the people of the state want and has continuously tried to improve the life of one and all. Thus it makes a significant contribution towards growth by increasing the factor productivity of land, labor and capital in the production process. This study finally concludes the various initiatives taken by the U.P. government in last 5 years and how these initiatives emerged in economic growth of the state.     INTRODUCTION 1 ______________________________________________________________________________________ 1.1 Introduction Urbanisation and economic development have caused rapid city expansion in size and structure. The urban structure is becoming increasingly complex, heterogeneous and irregular in shape. The development spreads over to the peri-urban areas resulting in degradation of natural and rural land over time. This process will continue further, if remain unchecked through proper planning measures. This will adversely impact the quality of life of both urban and peri-urban dwellers. Although the urban sprawl in a developing city cannot be stopped, however; a remedy to this issue can be devised through strict zoning regulations based on land suitability and carrying capacity, which allows land use to be channelled towards more sustainable uses. In this context, research study entitled Dynamics of Peri-Urban Areas: Prospects and Challenges of Sustainable Development - A case study of Peri-Urban area of Lucknow is undertaken and peri-urban areas are illustrated at Map 1. Lucknow has been divided into two parts based on growing urbanisation i.e. old Lucknow and New Lucknow. The peri-urban area denote to a grey area which is neither entirely urban nor purely rural in the traditional sense. Peri-urban areas are ‘those areas surrounding the cities within a daily commuting reach of the city core. In some parts of Asia, these regions can stretch for up to thirty kilometres away from city core’.
