Photos from the "Five 4 ONE" Concert Dear Parishioners, held at St. Catharine Church on July 16th.

Recently I had a relapse. I had made a promise to myself that I would curb my insatiable appetite for news by only reading the morning papers and ignoring the 24 hour news channels. I figured that in reading the papers there would be a greater likelihood that I could differentiate between fake news, lies and journalistic bias. At least when you are reading the paper, you have a better chance, through reflection and thought, to sift, assess, and come to a reasonable conclusion about what is happening in the world.

People who feel a responsibility to be well informed know that media bias did not arrive in the world during the past six Five 4 ONE, The Reynolds Family Praise Band, Anthony 14, Caroline,16, months. Journalists, writers and producers have always been Micayla, 17, Parents, John & Andrea. subject to the temptation to consciously or unconsciously blur the lines between facts and their own opinions. I would like to think that most people are smart enough to know and recognize this. And there has always been the temptation to conflate what I don't want to hear, or disagree with, with "fake news". I guess we all do that. Some people seem to be working harder at it of late.

As Catholics we are familiar with "Fake news". There have always been those, down through the centuries who distort and criticize our beliefs and faith. There are even those to this day in the Christian community, who accuse us of idolatry and blasphemy. And there also those, even within the Church who spew out fake news about our church and Left to right: Michaline Manno, Concert Volunteer; Amelia Lamis & about our . I have read outlandish and agenda driven Christopher McEwan, Violin Duo; Dr. Jarred Tafaro, Accompanist; Dr. claims from members of the church who claim that under Cindy Bell, Conductor; Shea Velloso, Guest Conductor. the leadership of Pope Francis, the Church is headed for schism or civil war. Cardinal Wuerl, of Washington said recently, "I think there are a small number of opponents and they are the ones that you hear quoted over and over again; the same quotes, the same words, in the same publications. It is really a concern of a few people in a few locations."

As Catholics we have a duty to commit to truth, honesty, sincerity and integrity. We should never consider it insignificant to share fake news posts on social media. This past year, I have "unfriended" a number of people who seem addicted to passing on unverified and unchecked facts and stories about public figures. We also have a responsibility to be cautious about dismissing accurate reports, facts and conclusions we dislike as either alt right fake news or liberal media bias.
