Neff Western Michigan University SEXISM ACROSS MUSICAL GENRES 2 Abstract Music is a part of daily life for most people, leading the messages within music to permeate people’s consciousness. This is concerning when the messages in music follow discriminatory themes such as sexism or racism. Sexism in music is becoming well documented, but some genres are scrutinized more heavily than others. Rap and hip-hop get much more attention in popular media for being sexist than do genres such as country and rock. My goal was to show whether or not genres such as country and rock are as sexist as rap and hip-hop. In this project, I analyze the top ten songs of 2013 from six genres looking for five themes of sexism. The six genres used are rap, hip-hop, country, rock, alternative, and dance. -

Lyons Jr. ’59 Chair in Biology, Texas A&M University Genetic architecture underlying circadian clock initiation, maintenance, and output in Drosophila Circadian clocks drive daily rhythms in metabolism, physiology, and behavior in organisms ranging from cyanobacteria to humans. The identification and analysis of “clock genes” in Drosophila revealed that circadian timekeeping is based on a transcriptional feedback loop Paul Hardin studied the development of the sea in which CLOCK-CYCLE (CLK-CYC) heterodimers activate transcription of their feedback urchin embryo in William Klein’s lab at Indiana repressors PERIOD (PER) and TIMELESS (TIM). APRIL 2017 APRIL 2018 — MARCH 2019 ANNUAL REPORT FY 2018 HUMAN FRONTIER SCIENCE PROGRAM ORGANIZATION The Human Frontier Science Program Organization (HFSPO) is unique, supporting international collaboration to undertake innovative, risky, basic research at the frontier of the life sciences. Special emphasis is given to the support and training of independent young investigators, beginning at the postdoctoral level. The Program is implemented by an international organisation, supported financially by Australia, Canada, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, Switzerland, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Nothern Ireland, the United States of America, and the European Commission. Since 1990, over 7000 researchers from more than 70 countries have been supported. JAPAN | NATURE INDEX PROFILE: YOSHINORI OHSUMI THE RISE AND RISE OF A BIOLOGY SUPERSTAR Nobel laureate Yoshinori Ohsumi’s persistent study of baker’s yeast spawned an exciting new field, and proves the value of supporting scientists in pursuit of their passion BY TIM HORNYAK biology superstar owes a lot to the humble microorganism that has provided the world with bread and Abooze since antiquity. Yoshinori Ohsumi’s dogged study of yeast’s inner workings spanned PARKS BENJAMIN decades, eventually winning the 2016 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his insights into how cells digest and recycle their own components. Autophagy, as these processes are known, is the subject of wide-ranging research in such fields as longevity and cancer. But, few people knew much about Ohsumi before he took the podium at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm in December 2016 to deliver his Nobel lecture in which he extolled yeast’s many lessons, and its “wonderful gifts of sake and liquor.” It’s unusual for the medicine Nobel to go to a single researcher, and Ohsumi’s win high- lighted the importance of individual research in the age of large, international collaborations.
