Re-Investing Value and Mexico's Changing CHASING BLACKNESS: RE-INVESTING VALUE AND MEXICO’S CHANGING RACIAL ECONOMY BY ANTHONY R. JERRY DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Anthropology in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2013 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Alejandro Lugo, Chair Associate Professor Arlene Torres Assistant Professor Marc Perry Associate Professor Ramona Pérez ABSTRACT This dissertation explores how race is mobilized by “those on the bottom” within the confines of the current multicultural political arena dictated by the Mexican state as a means of access to national citizenship(s). This work adds an explicit cultural, social, and political element to the notion of “racial economy”. I argue that race, ethnicity, and culture have an historic value that helps to define their current value within the neo-liberal multicultural state and can therefore be traded in a limited number of ways. In this way, the logic of difference, based on colonial logics of race and ethnicity, dictates particular potentials and perspectives on the use and value of race and ethnicity as a cultural, social, and political commodity. These colonial logics continue to inform state sanctioned strategies for the official recognition of difference within the Mexican nation state. However, this dissertation argues that these logics are explicitly challenged by grass root approaches to recognition and representation as witnessed by local activism and the tensions between state officials and community organizers over the means of production for self- representation. A phenomenon that I refer to as “implication”, suggests that invocations of particular histories and social phenomena, such as racism, implicate particular racial/ethnic groups in the deliberate construction of the racial past and present, and therefore can define government approaches to citizenship as the government only half-heartedly embraces the true historical treatment of its marginalized populations. The issue of choosing a social identity, then, is paramount, as all racial terms embody particular social histories and can act as mnemonic devices that trigger a number of accepted or contested social histories. For this reason, it is also argued that the tensions between government, academics, and activists over linguistic and symbolic representations of race are more than tiffs over politically correct nomenclature, and should be read as serious conflicts over social/historical representation and the power to self- ii identify. Lastly, I focus on the role that conflicting “racial economies” at the U.S./Mexico border have on processes of racial formation/transformation. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Social science research, and perhaps all scientific research, can be a lonely process. And, in the case of anthropology, the actual process of long-term ethnographic research can seem like a solitary endeavor. This solitary endeavor, or at least the appearance of the anthropologist as a lone trailblazing researcher can also be reinforced by the product of ethnographic research, which is most often times the formal ethnography, or in this case, the dissertation. However, the ethnography itself can silence or at least obscure the many professional and personal relationships that are required for its eventual materialization. Therefore, I would like to give thanks to the individuals and institutions whose presence and support, while only haunting the pages of this dissertation, have been instrumental in my personal and professional development as well as ultimate success in my graduate career. I will be forever indebted to those that have supported this “solitary endeavor”. Firstly, I would like to acknowledge the unending support of my family, both immediate and extended. Mariana Palafox, my spouse, friend, and partner, has endured at least as much as I have throughout the graduate school process. Picking up the slack created by my physical and metaphorical absences within our family of four has been a job that she continues to unselfishly undertake. Hopefully, I have shown my gratitude and respect in more ways than I can ever hope to do with this formal “thank you”. I would also like to acknowledge my two sons, Issak and Miles Jerry, for their love and patience, even on those occasions when dad had to choose the books over the park. I have been lucky to develop relationships with several people whose commitments to my work have far surpassed their professional and institutional obligations as advisors and mentors. Alejandro Lugo, chair of my dissertation’s committee, has been instrumental in the completion of this dissertation and my overall development as a scholar. He has taught me to be as patient as I am passionate for the work that I have dedicated myself to. Along with helping to sharpen my theoretical and analytical skills, Alejandro has been a true mentor and advisor, and a figure that I continue to emulate in my own writing, teaching, and advising. I must also give a very special thanks to Ramona Perez, for her continuing investment in me. Ramona has been instrumental in setting me on my current path and has never failed to offer any of the resources at her disposal with the singular goal being my overall success. Arlene Torres has also been a major support and motivator, taking me on as an advisee, all the while stretched to the limits with her own professional obligations. Her support has motivated me to pay it forward through my own commitment to the next generation of graduate students of color. I must also thank Marc Perry for our long conversations and his mentorship. In many ways, he has been a role model who continues to carve out a path for this young Black scholar to follow. Lastly, I would like to say thank you to my colleague Bernardo Rios for his long time friendship and support. Our countless conversations on all things academic as well as personal have allowed me to keep it all in perspective. Thirdly, on the most practical level, success would have been impossible without the institutional support that I have received throughout these last several years. The University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign supported my graduate training with a one year Graduate Fellowship. The Anthropology Department at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign also v made an investment in me with two years of support through their Diversity Outreach Coordinator position and an official TA ship. Tuition waivers that made attainment of the Ph.D. a reality also accompanied all of the above-mentioned support. JEL CODES: N56, N96, O33, Q15. ur aim is to determine continuities and changes in the cañada of Yosotiche environment since the introduction by Spanish conquerors and settlers of new Ocrops, especially sugarcane. A study of the biological modifications of a par- ticular ecosystem allows inferences on changes and continuities in socio-political rela- tions. This particular case study contributes to a discussion of the general model of Mix- tec political territoriality. The methodology applied here involves a convergence that integrates the analysis of historical documents, archaeological data, fieldwork and anth- ropological information, along with discoveries made by earlier research. It offers in- sight into occupational dynamics and their ties to the political, administrative, econo- mic and social structures within the cañada during colonial times. The introduction of foreign crops produced changes in the ecological complemen- tarity system practiced by the villages that possessed lands in the cañada, consequently modifying the labour relations of the inhabitants. Because they preserve forest cover, shade coffee farms provide vital ecological services including harboring biodiversity and preventing soil erosion. Unfortunately, tree cover in Mexico’s shade coffee areas is increasingly being cleared to make way for subsistence agriculture, a direct result of the unprecedented decline of international coffee prices over the past decade. This paper summarizes the key findings of a three-year study of deforestation in Oaxaca, one of Mexico’s prime regions for growing shade coffee. First, we find that deforestation during the 1990s was significant. Second, the loss of tree cover can likely be slowed by promoting coffee-marketing cooperatives and “green” certification, providing coffee price supports, and specifically targeting areas populated by small, indigenous farmers for assistance. Finally, to be effective, such policies must be implemented quickly after price shocks occur. However, less is known about quotidian lives during this period. In the Mexican state of Oaxaca, a region encompassing dozens of cultural groups, little is known about the everyday life of Mixtecs and how they reacted towards the newly established Spanish authority in their households. When they arrived at Achiutla, one of the biggest religious centres of ancient Oaxaca (Byland 2008), the Spaniards imposed their power on the public sphere, using religion and economy amongst others (Terraciano 2001:294, 340). My objective is to study the Mixtecs’ reaction to the arrival of Spaniards in the region by using paleoethnobotany to study foodways and how Achiutla’s inhabitants negotiated the arrival of new food items and to what level they accepted, incorporated, and resisted them.

    Capítulo I Antecedentes I ANTECEDENTES -El estado de Oaxaca se ubica al sur del país, en el extremo suroeste del istmo de Tehuantepec. Colinda con los estados de Guerrero al oeste, Puebla al noroeste, Veracruz hacia el norte y Chiapas al este. Hacia el sur posee casi 600 km de costa en el Océano Pacífico. Por su extensión, es el quinto estado más grande del país y ocupa el 4,8 por ciento de su superficie total. Alberga una rica composición multicultural donde conviven más de 16 grupos étnicos. Al igual que los otros estados de la federación, Oaxaca posee una constitución, un código civil, un código penal y un escudo propio. El estado se divide en Regiones Socio-Culturales: Región Costa, Región Sierra Sur, Región Istmo, Región Sierra Norte (Mixe, Villa Alta, Ixtlán de Juárez), Región Cuenca del Papaloapan (Tuxtepec, Choapan), Región Cañada, Región Mixteca, Región Valles Centrales. La extensión territorial es de 95,364 kilómetros cuadrados, además cuenta con una longitud costera de 598.7 kilómetros y la población total de Oaxaca asciende a cerca de 3,5 millones habitantes, del cual el 52% corresponde a mujeres y 48% a hombres. -El estado de Veracruz se localiza en la parte central de la vertiente del Golfo de México, limitando con 7 Estados Mexicanos, Al Norte: Tamaulipas, Al Oeste: San Luis Potosí, Hidalgo y Puebla, Al Suroeste y Sur: Oaxaca, Al Sureste: Chiapas y Tabasco. Every year thousands of Indigenous speakers are jailed without knowing the charges they are facing due to a language barrier. In Mexico, qualified Indigenous language interpreters are scarce. Further, the State employees refuse to admit the need for language services and the worth of Indigenous language interpreters’ jobs.

Accepted 19-V-2020. Abstract. Introduction: Reproduction is a critical phase for most living organisms and in bats the reproduc- tive strategies exhibit considerable complexity and variability. Objective: To describe the reproductive patterns and population dynamics of seven bat species (Artibeus toltecus, Carollia perspicillata, Glossophaga soricina, Mormoops megalophylla, Pteronotus fulvus, Pteronotus mesoamericanus and Natalus mexicanus) that roost in one mine (La Mina) and two caves (El Apanguito and Cerro Huatulco) in the State of Oaxaca, in Southeastern México. Methods: Sampling was conducted monthly from July 2016 to June 2017. Bats were captured using a harp trap, which was placed at the entrance of the roosts. The captured bats were identified using taxonomic keys, marked with an aluminum ring, sex and age class were also determined. Reproductive activity was mod- eled through 63 GLMs for each species (504 in total). The best model was selected according to the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC). Results: A total of 5 836 bats were captured and marked, classified into 14 species, 10 genera, and five families. The most abundant species were: P. fulvus and P. mesoamericanus, representing 41 % and 32.3 % of the captures, respectively.
