Arohena School pupils recently had their own version of the Fieldays Ag Art Awards. Amazing wearable arts costumes, designed and created by every student of the school, were presented as part of the science and technology pro- gramme. The brief was for children to create and design a wearable garment from recycled materials, with encouragement to use mater- ials found on the farm, as opposed to commercial materials. Director Donna Higham says parents, grandparents, commun- ity members, staff, children and friends of the school all worked side by side, learning from each other and enjoying the excitement of seeing their designs come to fruition. ‘‘The wealth of knowledge, expertise and imagination, together with the goodwill and commitment by all involved, made the whole experience a 7552333AA valuable team building experi- ence for the Arohena commun- ity.’’ The festival of music, light and colour was enjoyed by 160 friends and family, with the pre-sold tickets in hot demand. The ‘dream’ theme of the show had pterodactyls soaring in from above, dragons roaming in search of tasty morsels, mad scientists, puzzlers and gamblers all choreographed on a misty cat- walk. ‘‘This was no ordinary fashion show. There were krumping warriors, robots, aliens, meals on wheels, a stripey lion - as all lions have stripes in their dreams - an eagle and a bear vying for a place in the dream of the Lady of the Mist. ‘‘Costumes representing the four seasons and the elements, were all woven together by masked dream weavers through the mists of The Traveller’s com- mission. ‘‘The Traveller set his sights on the mysterious green cloaked lady, only to find that the dream What value do you place on was snatched from his grasp and a new dream was born, in the form of a Maori goddess.’’ your health and fi tness? Rugby respect for Moorheads

Back-to-back wins over Ngaruawahia and Hautapu has consolidated Te Awamutu Sports’ fifth placing in the Waikato U85kg rugby championship round. Sports outscored Hautapu four tries to one, winning 25-7 in Cambridge on Saturday. Tries went to lock Brendon Moorhead, halfback Mark Thorsen, first five Andrew Bailey and prop Matthew Hawkins, with Thorsen adding a conver- sion and penalty. It was fitting that Moorhead should score a try — a minute’s silence was observed before kickoff as a mark of respect to Te Awamutu Sports’ Moorhead brothers Brendon and Hayden, whose grandfather Doug Cotterell had passed away earlier in the day. The previous week saw Sports turn a 13-0 halftime deficit into a nail-biting 17-13 win over Ngaruawahia at Albert Park. Bailey turned in a man of the match perform- ance, capped with two outstanding tries, both converted by Thorsen. The Sports forward pack, out muscled in the first half, took control after the break, with replacement flanker Graeme Stewart playing a key role in the resurgence and landing a drop goal to boot. Te Awamutu Sports have a big incentive to win their two remaining games at home to Melville and 7559124AA away to University. It would be a fitting climax to the outstanding career of their coach Wayne Wirihana, who has indicated that he is pulling the plug at the end of the season.’’ Wirihana coached Te Awamutu Sports to the Waikato under 19 championship in 2006, beating University in the final at Albert Park.
