1,000 Films to See Before You Die Published in the Guardian, June 2007
1,000 Films to See Before You Die Published in The Guardian, June 2007 http://film.guardian.co.uk/1000films/0,,2108487,00.html Ace in the Hole (Billy Wilder, 1951) Prescient satire on news manipulation, with Kirk Douglas as a washed-up hack making the most of a story that falls into his lap. One of Wilder's nastiest, most cynical efforts, who can say he wasn't actually soft-pedalling? He certainly thought it was the best film he'd ever made. Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (Tom Shadyac, 1994) A goofy detective turns town upside-down in search of a missing dolphin - any old plot would have done for oven-ready megastar Jim Carrey. A ski-jump hairdo, a zillion impersonations, making his bum "talk" - Ace Ventura showcases Jim Carrey's near-rapturous gifts for physical comedy long before he became encumbered by notions of serious acting. An Actor's Revenge (Kon Ichikawa, 1963) Prolific Japanese director Ichikawa scored a bulls-eye with this beautifully stylized potboiler that took its cues from traditional Kabuki theatre. It's all ballasted by a terrific double performance from Kazuo Hasegawa both as the female-impersonator who has sworn vengeance for the death of his parents, and the raucous thief who helps him. The Addiction (Abel Ferrara, 1995) Ferrara's comic-horror vision of modern urban vampires is an underrated masterpiece, full- throatedly bizarre and offensive. The vampire takes blood from the innocent mortal and creates another vampire, condemned to an eternity of addiction and despair. Ferrara's mob movie The Funeral, released at the same time, had a similar vision of violence and humiliation. -

1 a Conversation with Rufus Wainwright by Frank
A Conversation with Rufus Wainwright by Frank Goodman (6/2007, Puremusic.com) Rufus Wainwright has gotten so big in recent years that he needs no introduction from us. His new CD Release The Stars debuted at #2 in the UK and #10 at iTunes. He is the brother of Martha and the son of Loudon and of Canadian Folk icon Kate McGarrigle. In Wikipedia, his genres are listed as Baroque Pop and Popera. His dad in a PM interview said that Rufus began listening to opera at a very young age. No, he doesn't sing like that, but on the other hand, no one's melodies are quite or even remotely like his. Also, his string and horn arrangements (whether handled by himself or his partners in poperatic crime) are quite unto themselves, and always one of the elements that set him immediately apart from the field, the entire field. In Michael Hill's beautiful bio at rufuswainwright.com, both the author's and especially the artist's words tell the story of Rufus's first self-produced CD and connected events in a most impressive fashion. It's reassuring that in this vapid rapid time there are still real artists in popular music. Puremusic: We haven't spoken in this way since 2003, so it's really great to have you on the phone again. Rufus Wainwright: Thank you. PM: Release the Stars, another triumph. You're in top form. RW: Thank you so much. Yeah, I'm definitely going for something-- [laughter] RW: God knows what it is, but it's something. -
International Literary Program
PROGRAM & GUIDE International Literary Program LISBON June 29 July 11 2014 ORGANIZATION SPONSORS SUPPORT GRÉMIO LITERÁRIO Bem-Vindo and Welcome to the fourth annual DISQUIET International Literary Program! We’re thrilled you’re joining us this summer and eagerly await meeting you in the inimitable city of Lisbon – known locally as Lisboa. As you’ll soon see, Lisboa is a city of tremendous vitality and energy, full of stunning, surprising vistas and labyrinthine cobblestone streets. You wander the city much like you wander the unexpected narrative pathways in Fernando Pessoa’s The Book of Disquiet, the program’s namesake. In other words, the city itself is not unlike its greatest writer’s most beguiling text. Thanks to our many partners and sponsors, traveling to Lisbon as part of the DISQUIET program gives participants unique access to Lisboa’s cultural life: from private talks on the history of Fado (aka The Portuguese Blues) in the Fado museum to numerous opportunities to meet with both the leading and up-and- coming Portuguese authors. The year’s program is shaping up to be one of our best yet. Among many other offerings we’ll host a Playwriting workshop for the first time; we have a special panel dedicated to the Three Marias, the celebrated trio of women who collaborated on one of the most subversive books in Portuguese history; and we welcome National Book Award-winner Denis Johnson as this year’s guest writer. Our hope is it all adds up to a singular experience that elevates your writing and affects you in profound and meaningful ways. -
BIOGRAPHY Carminho Is the Great Voice of Fado and One of the Most Celebrated International Portuguese Artists of the New Generation
BIOGRAPHY Carminho is the great voice of Fado and one of the most celebrated International Portuguese artists of the new generation. Carminho was born in the middle of the guitars and voices of Fado, daughter of the renowned Fado singer, Teresa Siqueira, she began singing in public at the age of twelve in the Coliseum. Fado was always so present in her life that she never thought it could be her profession. During college she sang at Fado houses. She had several offers to record, but she decided to wait. She graduated in Marketing and Advertising and realized that singing required a maturity and worldliness that she did not yet have. For a whole year she traveled the world, participating in humanitarian missions, and returned to Lisbon determined to giver herself entirely to an artistic journey. FADO, her first album, was released in 2009, and became the most acclaimed album of the year and decade. It achieved Platinum status, an enviable result for a debut, and opened the hearts of Portugal to her voice, and of the world, to her talents. This led to being awarded the best album of 2011 for the British magazine – SONGLINES, followed by performances in European capitals, WOMEX 2011 in Copenhagen, and at the Parisian UNESCO headquarters as part of the FADO bid for World Heritage. In the same year she collaborated with Pedro Alboran, and became the first Portuguese artist to debut at number 1 on the Spanish charts. In 2012, her next album, ALMA, debuted at No. 1 in sales in Portugal, and achieved prominent positions in other international markets. -
