The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens will celebrate National Train Day on Saturday, May 5 froM 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. National Train Day celebrates all things trains and a free conductor hat will be given away to children under 12, while supplies last. The Living Desert will host informative train chats from enthusiasts about the beginning of locomotive transport, to expert engineers discussing how the development of rail travel all started. Family fun activities will be centered around The Living Desert’s 3,300 feet of track at the Garden Railroad including a train treasure hunt, special trackless train rides around the Zoo, and a Choo-Choo-Churro special. The treasure hunt encourages guests to find the hidden and special features of the train exhibit. The first guest to complete the activity with a correct and complete form will become the “Conductor of the Day.” All others who complete the hunt will receive a ticket for a free trackless train ride. The Living Desert volunteers have laid more than 3,300 feet of track occupying three quarters of an acre on the property. The main line travels on 940 feet of track over realistic---looking waterways and past well---known landmarks, including miniaturized reproductions of historic Old Indio, the Grand Canyon and Mount Rushmore. With one full--time staff member and a crew of 25 volunteers, the exhibit is active every day with at least seven trains running continuously at all times. Train Day is free for members or with paid park admission. For additional information visit LivingDesert.org or call (760) 346-5694.
