Skog SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION PRESS City of Washington 1976 ABSTRACT Skog, Laurence E. A Study of the Tribe Gesnerieae, with a Revision of Gesneria (Gesneriaceae: Gesnerioideae). Smithsonian Contributions to Botany, number 29, 182 pages, 86 figures, 9 tables, 1976.-A study is made of the tribe Gesnerieae of the family Gesneriaceae from the West Indies, giving information on history, anatomy and morphology, pollination and dispersal, and hybridization in the tribe. The tribe comprises 67 species in 3 genera: Rhytidophyllztm, Gesneria, and Pheidonocarpa. The last genus is described as new, with a new species com- bination, Pheidonocarpa corymbosa (Swartz) L. Skog, and 2 subspecies. A revi- sion of Gesneria Linnaeus is presented based on field and herbarium studies. Gesneria is divided into 9 sections, 46 species (a new species, Gesneria onycho- calyx L. Skog, is described), 12 subspecies, and 11 varieties. The taxonomic portion includes keys, synonymies, descriptions, typifications, distributions, and ecology, as well as distribution maps and illustrations of the taxa. Also enum- erated in Appendix 1 are many species names once included in Gesnera or Gesneria, but which have been transferred to other genera. Two new combina- tions are made in this portion of the text: Rhytidophyllum cumanense (Han- stein) L. Skog and Rhytidophyllum onacaense (Rusby) L. Skog. ROBBINS LMER DREW MERRILL was born at East Auburn, Maine, Octo- E ber 15, 1876, and died in the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital, Forest Hills, Massachusetts, February 25, 1956, at the age of seventy-nine. Few American botanists had as long and distinguished a career or were as well-known and widely honored. His parents and immediate ancestors were farmers, fishermen, fac- tory workers, and the like, upright and industrious but with limited means, culture, and outlook. His father was a direct descendant of Nathaniel Merrill, the first immigrant of that name who settled in Ipswich (Newbury), Massachusetts in 1635. His grandmother White was believed to have been descended from Peregrine White of the Plymouth Colony. His immediate ancestry was of English (White), Scottish (Cummings), and French (Merrill, Noyes) origin. Both sides of his family evidenced the adventurous and pioneering spirit which characterized Merrill's career. His grandfather Noyes was a "forty-niner" who left his young children in charge of his wife and made the long journey to California via Panama, returning to Maine after a short and financially unsuccessful stay in California. His father ran away to sea at the age of fourteen, shipping as a cabin boy to the Orient via Cape Horn. -

University ABSTRACT Jamesbrittenia is a genus of 84 largely perennial sub-shrubs and herbs with a wide distribution in southern Africa (except J. dissecta in Sudan, Egypt and India). Plastid (rps16 and psbA-trnH) and nuclear (GScp) sequences were obtained for 42 species, mostly from the arid winter-rainfall west and southern regions of southern Africa. Applying both parsimony and Bayesian inference to combined molecular and morphological data sets, a phylogenetic hypothesis which is robust at the deeper nodes, was produced. -

In January, 1905, Captain John Donnell Smith, of Baltimore, Maryland, presented his herbarium and botanical library to the Smithsonian Institution. The herbarium, consisting: of more than 100.000 mounted specimens, became a part of the National Herba- rium. The library contains some 1,000 bound volumes, consisting chiefly of works relative to systematic botany, and being especially rich in works relating to Mexico and Central America. For the present, the library is to remain in Baltimore, but Captain Smith has placed his books freely at the disposal of botanists. Not only have the books been selected with great care, but they are all in conspicuously handsome bindings. It is doubtful if there is any public or private botanical library of its size which can equal it in value from either the scientific or the artistic point of view, A simple but appropriate book plate has been designed and printed and placed in each volume. An author catalogue of the library is presented herewith, which, it is believed, will be of interest and practical value to many botanists. Bayreuth after Wagner: Psychosocial Perspectives on Cosima Wagner, Winifred Wagner, and Houston Stewart Chamberlain Eric Doughney Submitted in fulfilment of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy International Centre for Music Studies Newcastle University January 2018 Abstract The Wagner institution at Bayreuth, after Wagner, was shaped as much by the psychologies of those to whom the composer’s legacy was entrusted as it was by purely historical and political events. Entwining musicological, philosophical, sociological, and psychoanalytic discourses, this revisionist and hermeneutic history of Bayreuth focuses on three individuals whose lives were acutely intertwined with the cultural and political evolution of the establishment: Cosima Wagner, Houston Stewart Chamberlain, and Winifred Wagner. Their personal and social paths were embedded in larger political and cultural changes, especially German nationalism, yet despite the intensity of their nationalist affinities none was indigenously German and in childhood each lacked those influences now considered essential for effective individuation. Following an initial discussion on Wagner, character studies of each applying, particularly, Jungian and Eriksonian theory explore the extent to which those absences and related factors informed not only their personal development but also the dynamics of their respective relationships with Wagner from which our perception of the composer and Bayreuth as an institution derives. i ii For my family iii iv Acknowledgements Considering the number of years
