  • Chapter 1 What Is a Plant?
OUP CORRECTED PROOF – FINAL, 02/17/12, SPi C h a p t e r 1 What is a plant? Plants, like love, are easier to recognize than to defi ne. At the entrance to many areas of outstanding natural beauty in England can be seen a sign that asks visitors to avoid ‘damaging trees and plants’. It is fair to ask in what way is a tree not a plant. A plant is often defi ned simply as a green, immobile organism that is able to feed itself (autotrophic) using photosynthesis. This is a heuristic defi nition for plants that can be refi ned if some more characters are added. Sometimes plants are described as organisms with the following combination of features: 1) the possession of chlorophyll and the ability to photosynthesize sugar from water and carbon dioxide; 2) a rigid cell wall made of cellulose; 3) storage of energy as carbohydrate and often as starch; 4) unlimited growth from an area of dividing and differentiating tissue known as a meristem; 5) cells with a relatively large vacuole fi lled with watery sap. So trees are clearly plants, and it is not diffi cult to think of other organisms that are unequivocally plants even though they lack one or more of these characteristics. For example, the orchid Corallorhiza wisteriana has the fl owers of an orchid, produces tiny seeds typical of the family Orchidaceae, and has the vascular tissue that you fi nd in the majority of land plants. However, what 1 OUP CORRECTED PROOF – FINAL, 02/17/12, SPi it does not have are green leaves, because this orchid is mycotrophic, meaning that it lives off fungi which themselves derive their energy from decaying material in the forest fl oor.

The diversity of wild orchids in the southern slope of Mount Merapi, Yogyakarta, Indonesia eight years after the 2010 eruption. Biodiversitas 21: 4457-4465. The ecosystem of the slopes of Mount Merapi is mountain tropical forest which is frequently affected by volcanic activities. The dynamics of the volcano affect the diversity and abundance of orchids in the ecosystem. Tritis is an area included in the Turgo Hill of the southern slope of Mount Merapi and is under the management of Mount Merapi National Park. The ecosystem in Tritis area classified as lower mountain forest and it has been affected by Mount Merapi eruption. This study aimed to do an inventory of orchid species in Tritis to know the diversity and abundance of orchids that exist in this area.

Dedicated to the memory of ELMER DREW MERRILL Dedication The completion of the sixth volume of this Flora gives me the privilege to dedicate this to the memory of ELMER DREW MERRILL, a man who has achieved more for the knowledge of the Malesian flora than individual botanist. any other It is neither my intention to give nor is it the proper place for a full biography of this most distinguished American scientist, as it would for the greater part be duplication of his own ROBBINS and the vivid life sketch ‘Autobiographical’ (1953), the scholarly essay by (1958), by SCHULTES (1957), which together give the story of his life, his ambitions, his personality, his immense drive, his multiple interests, his capacity for establishing botanical periodicals as well as of successfully filling the posts of Dean of a Faculty of Agriculture, director the Bureau of Science at Manila, directorofthe New York BotanicalGardens, and administrator of Botanical Collections of Harvard University. It is my purpose to review MERRILL'S aims and vision, ambitions and achievements in the light of his time, to explain the value ofhispioneer works for Indo-Malesianbotany, how he used opportunities and had to bow to unforeseen events and circumstances which in no mean way influenced his career. Naturally MERRILL'S personality pervades the story, that of a straight- forward, righteous person, unbiassed in scientific matters, appreciating any progress in bio- logical science. It is of course especially his great achievements with regard to the knowledge of the Malesian florawhich are the main theme and I will try to elucidate several aspects which he pursued.

Activities such as amenity forests, camping sites and outdoor sports can cause destruction to natural habitat. Geologically, the formation involved granites as the core and quartzite covers the outer layer of the mountain. This indicates the establishment of hill heath forest vegetation, mostly on the summit region and lowland dipterocarp forest vegetation at lower region. The uniqueness of its vegetation attracts botanists and collectors to do series of plant collection since 1845.

Analysis of chloroplast DNA sequences representing most genera of Cucurbitaceae, including Fevillea with four of its seven species, supports placing the new species in Fevillea despite its small (10–11.5 × 7.5–10 mm, 2–3 mm thick), flattened, and highly sculptured seeds, which are unusual in the genus. The molecular phylogeny also revealed that the recent sinking of the monotypic genus Anisosperma into Fevillea is not justified.

  • Epilist 1.0: a Global Checklist of Vascular Epiphytes
Zurich Open Repository and Archive University of Zurich Main Library Strickhofstrasse 39 CH-8057 Zurich www.zora.uzh.ch Year: 2021 EpiList 1.0: a global checklist of vascular epiphytes Zotz, Gerhard ; Weigelt, Patrick ; Kessler, Michael ; Kreft, Holger ; Taylor, Amanda Abstract: Epiphytes make up roughly 10% of all vascular plant species globally and play important functional roles, especially in tropical forests. However, to date, there is no comprehensive list of vas- cular epiphyte species. Here, we present EpiList 1.0, the first global list of vascular epiphytes based on standardized definitions and taxonomy. We include obligate epiphytes, facultative epiphytes, and hemiepiphytes, as the latter share the vulnerable epiphytic stage as juveniles. Based on 978 references, the checklist includes >31,000 species of 79 plant families. Species names were standardized against World Flora Online for seed plants and against the World Ferns database for lycophytes and ferns. In cases of species missing from these databases, we used other databases (mostly World Checklist of Selected Plant Families). For all species, author names and IDs for World Flora Online entries are provided to facilitate the alignment with other plant databases, and to avoid ambiguities. EpiList 1.0 will be a rich source for synthetic studies in ecology, biogeography, and evolutionary biology as it offers, for the first time, a species‐level overview over all currently known vascular epiphytes. At the same time, the list represents work in progress: species descriptions of epiphytic taxa are ongoing and published life form information in floristic inventories and trait and distribution databases is often incomplete and sometimes evenwrong.
