But tonight’s Nightly Notes feature focuses on Condors D Ryan Mahrle, who knows way more than I do about blood. Mah- rle is one of a select group of athletes who deals with the daily trials of diabetes. “I do four injections a day,” says Ryan, who was diagnosed with Type I diabetes when he was seven. Basically, his pancreas doesn’t make insulin, so he needs to rely on injections to monitor his blood glucose. “I take one before breakfast, lunch and dinner and then another before I go to sleep.” Ryan has been getting four shots a day, pretty much every day of his life for the past 16 years, carrying around his kit, taking it on road trips, etc. But being an athlete is a little different – the body is under a little more physical stress than the normal human being, and it only takes one 40-second shift in the fi rst period to get that delicate blood pumping. “In many ways I think being active has helped, in handling my weight,” he says. “But with the exercise I need to monitor it a little more. I can start to feel it when it’s getting a little low. I guess I’ve kind of developed a bit of a sixth sense about my blood sugar levels. “But when it starts to get low I just need to be able to get a little something to eat, or some Gato- rade or basically anything with some sugar in it.” Ryan’s a grown man now, but for children you could imagine that it can be diffi cult to deal with. But he says that dealing with it has gotten better over time, and that kids need to realize that they can move on and still do everything they want with diabetes. “When I was young it was tough because I didn’t like the shots, so my parents had to do it for me. And my friends would have sleepovers and I couldn’t go because they had to watch me and take care of it. But as I got older I learned how to deal with it and treat myself. I realized if I wanted to do anything I would have to fi gure this out. “I would tell kids that have diabetes that, although obviously they’re different than most people and their friends, at the same time, they can’t let it hold them back from their dreams, and you need to be able to live your life. The sooner that you accept it and understand that there is treat- ment and ways to deal with it, you can do anything you want to do with your life.” CONDORS STATS as of 03.23.09 Name GP G A PTS +/- PIM PPG SHG Pt/G PIMPG 15 Dave Bonk C 55 28 48 76 -4 57 12 0 1.38 1.04 19 Mark Derlago LW 44 29 39 68 6 32 12 0 1.55 0.73 27 Chad Painchaud RW 57 20 44 64 -7 46 4 2 1.12 0.81 10 Matt Pope F 54 30 33 63 -4 72 13 3 1.17 1.33 32 Mike Wirll (total) RW 52 21 34 55 -11 42 5 2 1.06 0.81 9 Andrew Ianiero F 67 20 32 52 -7 50 6 1 0.78 0.75 11 Bruce Graham (total) C 67 22 22 44 -13 59 9 0 0.66 0.88 20 Danny LaPointe (total) C 62 13 17 30 3 63 4 3 0.48 1.02 12 Brett Pilkington (total) C 44 9 21 30 -13 12 2 0 0.68 0.27 23 Donny Grover (total) D 63 4 24 28 6 75 2 0 0.44 1.19 25 Ryan Mahrle (total) D 62 4 21 25 4 36 2 1 0.4 0.58 * 14 Tylor Michel F 59 7 15 22 -5 56 1 0 0.37 0.95 * 2 Chris Kaufman D 44 4 8 12 -2 30 1 0 0.27 0.68 22 Liam Huculak RW 46 4 6 10 -14 149 0 0 0.22 3.24 * 8 Sean Hurley D 44 1 8 9 -12 30 0 0 0.2 0.68 6 Jay Langager D 26 2 6 8 -5 18 2 0 0.31 0.69 7 Scott Balan D 55 1 7 8 -14 90 0 0 0.15 1.64 * 36 Tom Morrow D 61 0 6 6 -8 70 0 0 0.1 1.15 * 18 Jason Bailey RW 31 0 1 1 -9 44 0 0 0.03 1.42 41 Dave McKee G 28 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 44 Yutaka Fukufuji G 31 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 Name GP Mins GA Shutouts Avg.
