FERRARO LIMPRIGHT KEETLEY Holistic view of the quintessential hockey moniker First, let me apologize for that title. I graduated with a degree in anthropology and you know what they say about old habits dying hard. Interestingly, an anthropologist could write a great ethnology on the hockey player culture. They have their own traditions, folklore, superstitions (see “Condors Rituals: 5:52 Bike Ride, Garlic Butter Spaghetti and Routes to the Rink.” Brian Marsh. Condors Nightly Notes. Issue 23; Feb. 29, 2008.) and language. One such component of hockey player language is the nicknames they create for one another. The fashioning of a nickname is quite easy. There are two “go-to” nickname types. They consist of shortening the last name to one syllable and adding either a long “e” sound or an “s.” Sean Venedam becomes Venny, Yutaka Fukufuji becomes Fuji. Scott Balan becomes Bals and Jay Langager becomes Langs. At times these methods are combined. Andrew Ianiero is commonly referred to as Iazy. It should be noted that these nicknames extend to others involved with the team, but off the ice. Bob Bartlett, director of hockey operations, and Kevin Bartl, VP of communica- tions, are a coincidental example. Following the linguistics rule, they are given the same nickname. While passing each other in the hall a month ago they simultaneously smiled and said “Hey Barts!” Another common naming practice is to simply use just the fi rst syllable of the last name. Liam Huculak is known as Hooch and Tylor Michel is called Meesh. It should also be noted that a player is not permitted to create his own nickname. On the 2007-08 squad, Joe Dustin entered the locker room his fi rst day and while introduc- ing himself he let the team know that his last team called him Cyclone. His teammates laughed, and after short deliberation they informed him that his moniker while in Ba- kersfi eld would be Joe Dirt. Mark Derlago was given the name Billy his fi rst week in a Condors sweater (for his uncle playing in the NHL) and Bobby Bolt has been dubbed BoBo. The English syntax is the most common indicator of what a nickname will be; Jay Langager said when it comes to creating a nickname, “you’ll know you got the right nickname for your teammate when it just sounds right.” CONDORS STATS as of 02.25.09 Name GP G A PTS +/- PIM PPG SHG Pt/G PIMPG 27 Chad Painchaud RW 57 20 44 64 -7 46 4 2 1.12 0.81 * 10 Matt Pope F 52 29 31 60 -7 70 13 3 1.15 1.35 15 Dave Bonk C 45 22 32 54 -9 49 11 0 1.2 1.09 19 Mark Derlago LW 34 21 27 48 -1 24 9 0 1.41 0.71 9 Andrew Ianiero F 57 14 24 38 -14 42 6 0 0.67 0.74 32 Mike Wirll (total) RW 42 13 24 37 -18 34 3 2 0.88 0.81 11 Bruce Graham (total) C 57 18 18 36 -23 53 8 0 0.63 0.93 20 Danny LaPointe (total) C 52 12 14 26 1 55 4 3 0.5 1.06 12 Brett Pilkington (total) C 39 8 16 24 -16 6 2 0 0.62 0.15 23 Donny Grover (total) D 53 2 20 22 -1 69 1 0 0.42 1.3 25 Ryan Mahrle (total) D 53 3 17 20 -4 36 1 1 0.38 0.68 * 14 Tylor Michel F 49 3 13 16 -8 54 0 0 0.33 1.1 * 2 Chris Kaufman D 35 2 8 10 -4 22 1 0 0.29 0.63 *3 Andrew Thomas D 19 0 10 10 0 13 0 0 0.53 0.68 * 8 Sean Hurley D 40 1 7 8 -13 28 0 0 0.2 0.7 7 Scott Balan D 46 0 7 7 -13 88 0 0 0.15 1.91 22 Liam Huculak RW 36 2 4 6 -16 123 0 0 0.17 3.42 * 36 Tom Morrow D 53 0 6 6 -12 64 0 0 0.11 1.21 6 Jay Langager D 18 2 3 5 -7 10 2 0 0.28 0.56 * 4 Hank Carisio (total) F 11 0 2 2 2 41 0 0 0.18 3.73 24 Bobby Bolt LW 11 0 1 1 -5 23 0 0 0.09 2.09 * 18 Jason Bailey RW 21 0 0 0 -7 26 0 0 0 1.24 44 Yutaka Fukufuji G 23 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 41 Dave McKee G 24 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 Name GP Mins GA Shutouts Avg.
