If you’ve seen how cool the Fukufuji jersey backpacks are, then you already know that the Backpack Giveaway is enough to make today’s date signifi cant in the sands of time, but believe it or not, there have been some other fairly notable events that have occurred on December 27 throughout the years. On Dec. 27, 537, nearly 1,500 years ago, the Hagia Sophia was completed. The Hagia Sophia, located in modern day Istanbul, Turkey, was a Byzantine mosque that was constructed under the or- ders of Emperor Justinian. At the time of its completion, it was the largest cathedral ever built, and remained so for almost 1,000 years. It is considered to be the epitome of Byzantine architecture, widely renowned for its massive dome, and now serves as a museum in Istanbul. On Dec. 27, 1831, English naturalist Charles Darwin embarked on his fi ve-year voyage on the HMS Beagle, during which his research would serve as the cornerstone for his conclusions and theories on evolution, natural selection and diversifi cation. He spent the majority of his journey on land during the Beagle’s numerous stops around the globe, examining the vast array of fl ora and fauna species few scientists had ever come across before. On Dec. 27, 1918, the Great Poland Uprising began against the Germans following the conclusion of World War I. With Germany in a state of disarray after the western front fell and the subsequent armistice was signed on Nov. 11, Poland seized the opportunity to rise against the Germans and commence its battle to regain sovereignty for the fi rst time since 1795. Heavy fi ghting continued through mid-February, 1919, and skirmishes lasted through June, until the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919. On Dec. 27, 1945, the World Bank was created upon the signing of 28 nations to provide fi nancial and technical assistance to developing countries and countries in need with the over-arching goal of reducing poverty. It was originally conceived to help rebuild war-torn Europe following the con- clusion of World War II. The fi rst loan it issued was for $250 million to France to aid in post-war reconstruction. On Dec. 27, 1966, Bill Goldberg, professional wrestler and football player, was born. On Dec. 27, 1968, Apollo 8, the fi rst manned voyage to a celestial body splashes down in the Pacifi c Ocean, ending the mission of its three-man crew of Mission Commander Frank Borman, Command Module Pilot James Lovell and Lunar Module Pilot William Anders, who became the fi rst humans to see the far side of the Moon. Their mission took a total of six days and included a Christmas Eve television broadcast, which was the most watched TV program ever.
