Tonight’s Matchup: On Friday, the Bakersfield Condors and San Jose Barracuda meet up for the first time in 2016-17 as San Jose gears up for its home opener. Last year, the Barracuda went 5-6-0-1 against the Condors and 2-4-0-0 on home ice. Bakersfield finished 5th in the Pacific Division and 10th in the Western Conference with a record of 31-28-7-2 (71 pts.), while San Jose claimed the final Pacific Division playoff spot and were 8th in the Western Conference with a record of 31-26-8-3 (73 pts.).

Players To Watch: With his winner against Ontario, Sharks 5th round pick in 2012 (#138 overall) Danny O’Regan now has three points through two games, including goals in each of his first two professional contests. Born in Berlin, Germany, O’Regan appeared in 154 games for Boston University, totaling 154 points (66-88-154), 72 PIMs and a plus-28 rating.

Sharks 1st round pick in 2015 (#9 overall) Timo Meier is scheduled to make his highly anticipated professional debut for the Barracuda on Friday. The lethal offensive threat has been out for a month after being diagnosed with mononucleosis. In 2015-16, Meier scored 87 points (34-53-87) between the and Rouyn-Noranda Huskies (QMJHL) in his final year of junior hockey.

Former 1st round pick (#4 overall) of the in 2012, the Oilers acquired Griffin Reinhart in a day trade in 2015. Reinhart split time between Bakersfield and Edmonton in 2015-16. The 6-4 and 216 lb. d-man played 29 games for the Oilers last year, total- ing one assist, six PIMs and -6 rating. Reinhart has zero points for the Condors through three games.

Through three games, the third-year pro, Jujhar Khaira, leads the Condors points (4) and goals (3). The former Everett Silvertip’ had four goals and four assists in eight games for San Jose in 2015. The third round pick (#63 overall) in 2012 appeared in his first 15 NHL game last , totaling two assists and a -2 rating.

Between the pipes: Troy Grosenick got the nod for San Jose in the season opener at Stockton on Oct. 15, but the fourth-year pro took a hard-luck loss, 3-2. Grosenick has a 3.23 GAA through one game and a .900 SV% after allowing three goals on 30 shots. Grosenick went 11-10-4 in 2015-16 with a 3.16 GAA and a .894 SV%.

Mantas Armalis earned a win in his AHL debut last Saturday at Ontario, 5-4 in overtime. Armalis allowed four goals on 15 shots but made the saves needed late to earn the win. Armalis has a 3.66 GAA and a .778 SV% through one game.

Nick Ellis was given the first two starts of his pro career in the first two games of the year for Bakersfield in Manitoba against the Moose. Ellis won a national title as a member of the Providence Friars in 2015. Through two games with the Condors, Ellis is 1-1-0-0 with a 2.53 GAA and a .925 SV%.

Laurent Brossoit enters his fourth year as a pro in 2016-17. The former Edmonton Oil King’ went 0-4 with the in five starts last year with a 3.16 GAA and a .873 SV%. Brossoit spent the majority of the season with the Condors, going 18-9-3 with a 2.66 GAA and .920 SV%. The former 6th round selection (#164 overall) by in 2011 went 2-0-2 against San Jose in four games in 2015-16. Brossoit suffered a loss in his lone start vs. Tucson on Oct. 22, allowing two goals on 27 shots.

San Jose’s Last Time Out: San Jose used five different scorers to top the Ontario Reign, 5-4, last Saturday at Citizens Business Bank Arena. Kevin Lebanc scored his first of his pro career, Tim Heed had three helpers and Nikolay Goldobin scored a goal and two assists while Mantas Arma- lis earned the win in his AHL debut, stopping 11 shots.

Bakersfield’s Last Time Out: The Bakersfield Condors suffered a 2-1 loss in their home opener last Saturday vs. Tucson. The Condor’s Scott Allen tied the game 1-1 in the third after Tucson’s Brandon Perlini scored the games lone goal in the first, Eric Selleck recaptured the Roadrunners lead late in the third to make it 2-1, a lead Tucson wouldn’t release. Laurent Brossoit took the loss despite making 23 saves.

The Oakland native finished enters his 19th season as the head coach of San Jose’s top development affiliate and his 21th season overall with the Sharks- or ganization. In his 18 seasons as head coach, Sommer has compiled a 648-589-48-68-59 (W-L-T-OTL-SOL) record in the regular season and has reached the postseason nine times, including reaching the playoffs in each of the last two seasons.

The San Jose Sharks dressed 20 players during the 2015-16 season that developed under Sommer’s tutelage. In fact, 38 players have made their NHL debuts with the Sharks over the last ten seasons -- including Justin Braun, , Dylan DeMelo, Tommy Wingels, and Melker Karlsson.

Roy Sommer surpassed Frank Mathers (1,256 games coached) for the most games coached in AHL history on March 26, 2014 in Worcester’s 5-3 victory in Lewiston, ME over the . Sommer has coached 1412 AHL games – all with the SJ Sharks AHL affiliates. In total, he has been a head coach in 1,746 games in the AHL and ECHL. Last season, coach Sommer surpassed Hockey Hall of Famer Fred “Bun” Cook (636 wins) for the most wins in AHL history with his 637th win on February 10, 2016 in a 4-2 victory over the Ontario Reign at SAP Center.

In 2009-10, Sommer led the Worcester Sharks to a franchise record 49 wins and captured the regular season Atlantic Division title. After nine seasons in Worcester, MA (2006-15); Sommer moved with the franchise to San Jose, CA to coach the Barracuda during the 2015-16 season.

As head coach for San Jose’s top development team, Sommer has coached 95 players who’ve spent time in the , including forward , who was named 2010-11 PlayStation “Sharks Rookie of the Year.”

Sommer, 59, began coaching San Jose’s top development affiliates in 1998-99 with the AHL’s Kentucky Thoroughblades. He coached the T-Blades for three seasons before San Jose relocated their AHL team to Cleveland.

In his first season with Kentucky, the Thoroughblades registered franchise records for most regular season wins (44), most road wins (21) and total points (98) in a season while posting the AHL’s fifth-best record. This success came despite having 17 players promoted to the NHL during the season.

From 1999-2001, Sommer’s club went 84-50-21-5 to capture two consecutive Mid-Atlantic Division titles and went to the Calder Cup Playoffs each season. Sommer’s success was recognized during the 1999-00 season with his selection as the head coach for the Canadian All-Star Team, where his squad toppled PlanetUSA, 8-3. Before being named head coach of the Thoroughblades in 1998, Sommer spent two seasons (1996-98) as an assistant coach with the San Jose Sharks. With San Jose, Sommer was responsible for pre-scouting upcoming opponents for their offensive and defensive tendencies, line combinations and special teams’ tactics. In addition, he assisted in running practices and provided special on-ice extended workouts with scratched players and those rehabili- tating injuries.

Before Sommer joined San Jose, he was head coach of the ECHL’s Richmond Renegades from 1991-96 and was named 1995-96 Coach of the Year after leading his team to a league best 46-11-13 mark and a league record 105 points in capturing the Brabham Cup (best regular season record). Sommer led the Renegades to the Riley Cup (league championship) in 1994-95 after posting a 41-20-7 regular season record. In addition, he served as head coach of the ECHL’s East All-Star Team in 1994-95 and the North All-Star Team in 1995-96.

Sommer’s additional coaching experience includes assistant coaching stints with the Albany Choppers and Muskegon Lumberjacks of the Interna- tional Hockey League and working with USA Hockey as an assistant coach at several evaluation camps for 16- and 17-year-old players.

In 1998, he served as head coach and general manager for the silver-medal winning Team USA (4-1-0 record) at the International Ice Hockey Federation In- Line Hockey World Championships in Anaheim. Sommer’s squads won gold medals in each of the first two tournaments (1996 in St. Paul, Minn. and 1997 in Anaheim) and posted undefeated records each year. His three-year coaching mark at this prestigious tournament stands at 17-1-0.

The former Bay Area youth hockey player coached Roller Hockey International’s San Jose Rhinos for three seasons (1994-96), including capturing the Mur- phy Cup (league championship) in 1995. In addition, Sommer served as head coach for RHI’s 1996 Western Conference All-Star Team.

Before stepping behind the bench, Sommer played nine seasons of professional ice hockey. A sixth round selection by the in 1977, Sommer played in the Leafs system as well as those of the St. Louis Blues, Edmonton Oilers, and . The highlight of Sommer’s NHL career came during the 1980-81 season when, as a teammate of Wayne Gretzky, Sommer scored a goal in his NHL debut with the Edmonton Oilers.

Sommer was of the Wichita Wind from 1980-83 and again with Muskegon in 1986-87. Sommer, who played left wing and center, was a member of the AHL Calder Cup Champion Maine Mariners in 1983-84 and helped lead Muskegon to the 1985-86 IHL title (). He played his junior hockey for the Spruce Grove Mets, which won the 1975 , and for the Calgary Centennials. Sommer was a member of the United States National Team at the World Junior Championships in 1976-77.

Sommer resides in San Jose, CA. with his wife Melissa and their three children: Marley, Castan and Kira.

Mougenel joined the Sharks organization in 2014-15 after spending the 2013-14 season as the assistant coach of the . Before Hershey, he had a four-year stint as head coach of the ECHL’s and posted a 151-111-10-16 record which included appearances in the playoffs during all four seasons from 2009 to 2013, including the 2012 Western Conference championship.

The native of Scarborough, Ontario previously served as assistant coach for four seasons with the ECHL’s and .

Mougenel’s last playing action came during the 2002-03 season, when he posted 35 points (15-20-35) in 53 games with the ECHL’s Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies where he captured the 2003 Kelly Cup championship. In 180 regular-season games with ECHL Hampton Roads, Chesapeake, Jackson and Atlantic City from 1997- 2003, Mougenel totaled 105 points (46 goals, 59 assists) and 271 penalty min- utes. He also played 95 games in the former International Hockey League with the Quebec Rafales and , and played 20 games in the AHL with the in the 1999-2000 season.
