That week where a great sum- mer vacation, which never seems long enough, comes to an end all too abruptly. It’s a drastic change from the carefree, laid-back style of summer to the grind and work that comes with school starting. For the next nine months there will be reports written, ex- periments conducted, and ultimately grades received. The off-season in hockey mirrors a school year in that sense. Hockey ends when spring does and players get time away from the ice over the summer months, before the early- morning meetings and practices pull into high gear come September. The Condors know that lengthy practices and conditioning exercises are the norm. They’ll expect to be pushed to the limit physically and mentally as they improve and chase their goals. But, we bet they didn’t expect to be taken back to school and asked to give a report on what they did over the summer! For some guys, like Ian McKenzie, the summer is the perfect time to reconnect with family and friends that you don’t get to see much during the season. “This summer was the first time I had been home in a long time,” he said. “I didn’t really do much, but it was great to get home.” Even in the off-season, players are still training and working on their game as much as possible. In addition to the grueling off-season regiment he put himself through this sum- mer, Hans Benson took time out to give back to the Northern California community which gave him his start in hockey. Benson went back to Menlo Park and instructed youth hockey programs at clinics and camps. “I worked with the kids and enjoyed doing it,” said Benson. “It was a way for me to give back. I wish I could do it more often. It’s definitely something I want to do in the future too. They’re (his youth instructors) the ones who taught me the game.” Two players who enjoyed getting outdoors this summer were new Condor Matt Mar- quardt and returning Bakersfield defenseman Erik Burgdoerfer. “I like to fish, so I did that a lot in addition to spending some quality time with family and friends,” Marquardt said. Burgdoerfer, who hails from Long Island, ventured to the northern part of New York for some of his vacation. “We went camping up in Lake George,” Burgdoerfer said. “It was a lot of fun.” Whether it was helping teach the game of hockey, spending time at home with family, or enjoying time on the lake, the Condors certainly had a good summer.
