GOALS ASSISTS WINS GOALS ASSISTS WINS 6 5 2 1 1 1 CARUANA BONK McKEE KONKLE RADJA FALLON Shine the Spotlight Off-Ice! Look up right now and focus on the scene in front of you. Chances are that the teams are skating in circles around their respective zones, warming up, while the on-ice offi cials loosen up as well. Now look harder. The players and on-ice offi cials aren’t the only ones getting ready for the game, and if you look closely enough, you can see some of the most un-sung and incredibly pivotal pieces in the offi ciating of a professional hockey game – the off-ice offi cials. Since we are proud of the group we have here in Condorstown, we thought it only fi tting to highlight some of the veterans of the Bakersfi eld crew, who have been volunteering their time to Condors hockey for many seasons. This issue, we caught up with two of the vets: Phil Keeler and Fred Olague. Nightly Notes: You guys are no rookies, how many years have you been an off-ice offi cial? Phil Keeler: I actually started with the Oilers next door in the old building... Then the Fog and now the Con- dors... how many years is that 15 ?? Fred Olague: I started working in the middle of the 1996-1997 season for the Bakersfi eld Fog as the Visitors Box Attendant. I guess this is nearly 12 years for me as an Off-Ice Offi cial. NN: How did you guys get into it initially? PK: They needed some help with stats one night and I volunteered to do shots on . I just kind of kept on doing it after that. Also, I have been a Drag Racing announcer for years, so I fi lled in from time to time as the rink side announcer. As time went on I did a little of everything – clock, goal judge, penalty box etc. I’ve been involved in youth hockey for quite some time, plus I did some coaching, so I guess my understanding of the game has helped in the scoring of games. FO: I was just a fan, a season ticket holder when one of the guys in charge asked me if I’d like to fi ll in one night in the Penalty Box. I said sure. After the game he asked if I liked the job, I said yes and he told me I was the new permanent Penalty Box Attendant. I’ve been working ever since. NN: When you’re not helping out as an off-ice offi cial, what are you up to? PK: Work-wise, I’m the President and Owner of Technical Wireline Services. Hobby-wise, I Race Go Karts at Buttonwillow Raceway (little 100 mph rockets) and I like to fi sh. FO: I am an employee of the Kern County Superintendent of Schools working at the Kern County Juvenile Hall Court School. I have been there over 20 years. NN: Do you have a favorite story from over a decade and a half of off-ice offi ciating? PK: Not sure this is really a favorite because it was a ton of work but, it takes usually four people minimum to score a game, and on one night, due to a fl u bug or something, I was the only one there to do plus/minus, shots on goal and assists. Needless to say it was pretty hectic and that was before we had computers – it was all on paper. I got through it though, and to my knowledge without mistakes! FO: Well, I’ve had cowbells hit me from far above my spot at the game and at least 3 glass panels shatter on me, but I really remember the night that Chad Wagner of the San Diego Gulls (one of their mild-mannered fellows as I recall) used me as a starting step to climb out of my penalty box and go into the crowd at the old Convention Center arena. Also, in 2004 when Scott Gomez of the Devils played for Alaska, he came into the box during a game on Election Night. When he sat down, I said “Hi, Scott,” and he answered, “Hi, who’s winning the elec- tion?” I’ve gotten to know some really interesting guys over the years. I really enjoy the game and the organiza- tion. It is truly a lot of fun!
