Queries or requests for any other use, or if a more substantial copy is required, should be directed in the owner(s) of the Intellectual Property Rights. i Abstract The Western image of Turks is identified with two distinctive stereotypes: ‘Terrible Turk’ and ‘Lustful Turk.’ These stereotypical images are deeply rooted in the history of the Ottoman Empire and its encounters with Christian Europe. Because of their fear of being dominated by Islam, European Christians defined the Turks as the wicked ‘Other’ against their perfect ‘Self.’ Since the beginning of Crusades, the Western image of Turks is associated with cruelty, barbarity, murderousness, immorality, and sexual perversion. These characteristics still appear in cinematic representations of Turks. In Western films such as Lawrence of Arabia and Midnight Express, the portrayals of Turks echo the stereotypes of ‘terrible Turk’ and ‘lustful Turk.’ This thesis argues that these stereotypes have transformed into a myth and continued to exist uniformly in Western contemporary cinema. The thesis attempts to ascertain the uniformity and consistency of the cinematic image of Turks and determine the associations between this image and the myths of ‘terrible Turk’ and ‘lustful Turk.’ To achieve this goal, this thesis examines the trajectory of the Turkish image in Western discourse between the 11th and 21st centuries. -

Openly gay himself, Ozpetek has license. challenged the celluloid closet that silenced or, at best, marginalized queerness in Italian film. As Elliott Stein concluded in 2008, Ozpetek's "oeuvre has been marked by a masterful handling of actors, often in densely populated ensemble stories involving characters from different backgrounds and sexual preferences." Ozpetek was born in Istanbul on February 3, 1959. He traveled to Italy to attend college in 1976 and has made his home there ever since. Ozpetek completed a university degree in film history at Rome's Sapienza University. Subsequently, he studied art history and costume design at the Navona Academy and then qualified as a director at the Accademia di Arte Drammatica "Silvio D'Amico." After a short collaboration with Julian Beck's Living Theatre, Ozpetek began his career as an assistant director in the early 1980s, working with important Italian directors including Massimo Troisi and Marco Risi. In 1996, Ozpetek directed his first movie, The Turkish Bath (Hamam; also released as Steam) which received excellent reviews at the Cannes Film Festival and became an immediate, unexpected hit. It was distributed in more than 20 countries. -

One of Wilder's nastiest, most cynical efforts, who can say he wasn't actually soft-pedalling? He certainly thought it was the best film he'd ever made. Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (Tom Shadyac, 1994) A goofy detective turns town upside-down in search of a missing dolphin - any old plot would have done for oven-ready megastar Jim Carrey. A ski-jump hairdo, a zillion impersonations, making his bum "talk" - Ace Ventura showcases Jim Carrey's near-rapturous gifts for physical comedy long before he became encumbered by notions of serious acting. An Actor's Revenge (Kon Ichikawa, 1963) Prolific Japanese director Ichikawa scored a bulls-eye with this beautifully stylized potboiler that took its cues from traditional Kabuki theatre. It's all ballasted by a terrific double performance from Kazuo Hasegawa both as the female-impersonator who has sworn vengeance for the death of his parents, and the raucous thief who helps him. The Addiction (Abel Ferrara, 1995) Ferrara's comic-horror vision of modern urban vampires is an underrated masterpiece, full- throatedly bizarre and offensive. The vampire takes blood from the innocent mortal and creates another vampire, condemned to an eternity of addiction and despair. Ferrara's mob movie The Funeral, released at the same time, had a similar vision of violence and humiliation. -

Giuseppe Miale Di Mauro
Giuseppe Miale di Mauro Autore, drammaturgo e regista teatrale. Diplomato all’Accademia d’Arte Drammatica. È stato uno dei protagonisti dello spettacolo Gomorra andato in scena dal 2007 al 2012, vincitore del premio Gli Olimpici del Teatro. È autore di Quattro, scritto con Mario Gelardi, vincitore dei premi “Girulà” e “Scenario”. Ha scritto con Roberto Saviano la trasposizione teatrale di Santos, prodotto da Nuovo Teatro di Marco Balsamo. Ha diretto nell’edizione 2010 del “Napoli Teatro Festival Italia” lo spettacolo La Città di dentro, scritto con Angelo Petrella. Ha diretto lo spettacolo 12 baci sulla bocca, per sei anni di repliche. Ha scritto con Nicolai Lilin la trasposizione teatrale di Educazione Siberiana. Spettacolo di cui è anche regista, prodotto dal Teatro Stabile di Torino in collaborazione con ERT e Teatro Metastasio Stabile della Toscana. Ha diretto All In prodotto dal Teatro Stabile di Napoli, teatro Nazionale. Ha diretto la trasposizione teatrale del film Mi manda Picone, prodotta da Michele Gentile con Biagio Izzo. È stato il regista collaboratore di Mario Martone per la messinscena de Il sindaco del Rione Sanità di Eduardo De Filippo, prodotto dal Teatro Stabile di Torino e dalla Elledieffe srl. Dal 2016 inizia una collaborazione con il Teatro Ghione di Roma, dirigendo lo spettacolo Certe Notti con Antonio Grosso, e prosegue il rapporto con il debutto di Miseria e Nobiltà 2.0 con Francesco Procopio di cui firma l’adattamento e la regia. È uno dei soci fondatori e direttore artistico del Nest Napoli est Teatro. È il regista stabile della Compagnia Nest con la quale ha messo in scena diversi spettacoli tra cui Love Bombing, Otello, Gli onesti della banda scritto a quattro mani con Diego De Silva.
