THE MYTH of 'TERRIBLE TURK' and 'LUSTFUL TURK' Nevs
THE WESTERN IMAGE OF TURKS FROM THE MIDDLE AGES TO THE 21ST CENTURY: THE MYTH OF ‘TERRIBLE TURK’ AND ‘LUSTFUL TURK’ Nevsal Olcen Tiryakioglu A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements of Nottingham Trent University for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy December 2015 Copyright Statement This work is the intellectual property of the author. Because of their fear of being dominated by Islam, European Christians defined the Turks as the wicked ‘Other’ against their perfect ‘Self.’ Since the beginning of Crusades, the Western image of Turks is associated with cruelty, barbarity, murderousness, immorality, and sexual perversion. These characteristics still appear in cinematic representations of Turks. In Western films such as Lawrence of Arabia and Midnight Express, the portrayals of Turks echo the stereotypes of ‘terrible Turk’ and ‘lustful Turk.’ This thesis argues that these stereotypes have transformed into a myth and continued to exist uniformly in Western contemporary cinema. The thesis attempts to ascertain the uniformity and consistency of the cinematic image of Turks and determine the associations between this image and the myths of ‘terrible Turk’ and ‘lustful Turk.’ To achieve this goal, this thesis examines the trajectory of the Turkish image in Western discourse between the 11th and 21st centuries. -

ALESSANDRO FRANCESCA GASSMAN D’AloJA directed by FERZAN OZPETEK Ferzan Ozpetek Steam – The Turkish Bath by Mario Sesti Ferzan Ozpetek, a summary Born in Istanbul on 3rd February 1959, Ferzan Ozpetek spent his childhood surrounded by women: his mother, a lover of art and music, and his grandmother, a wise and caring presence. Both unquestionably helped foster his artistic development and decision to become a filmmaker. When he was very young the first film he ever saw enchanted him: Mankiewicz’s sumptuous Cleopatra. The kitsch impact of this staging had an explosive and memorable effect on him. The opulence of the costumes, the monumental style of Hollywood kitsch in the reconstruction of ancient times and the melodramatic expressiveness of the couple Liz Taylor and Richard Burton marked his attention. Despite the strong bond with his homeland and family, he decided to move to Rome at the age of 17 where he attended the Academy of Dramatic Arts “Silvio D’Amico”, thus coming into contact with Julian Beck’s Living Theater, one of the most important experimental theaters of that period; he then reverted to his true passion and went to university to study History of Cinema. 2 Ferzan Ozpetek, a summary Thanks to his collaboration with a film magazine, he had the opportunity to interview some of the most important Italian directors and found a job as an assistant director on the set of Scusate il ritardo by Massimo Troisi (1983). This was his first real experience on a movie set. In the following years he worked with Maurizio Ponzi, Ricki Tognazzi, Francesco Nuti, Sergio Citti, and Marco Risi but he already had a story in mind, an idea for his first film as a director. -

Such texts pose a variety of problems for their readers as well as for literary critics and theorists—problems revolving around a number of inter-related issues that coalesce around two primary questions: 1) How are such works to be read and interpreted?, and 2) What do the author’s strategies of self-representation in such works reveal about the relations between their fiction and their lives? Answers to the first question may be arrived at through a consideration of various theories of fiction as both a discursive mode and a distinct literary genre—particularly the theory of fiction advanced by Gregory Currie in The Nature of Fiction , which defines fiction as a communicative act according to issues of authorial intentionality. -
