So the questions we will be constantly asking throughout the essay can be: Is what can be called part of national film culture and identity? Is defining a film part of national heritage a modernist act that is also related to theories of nationalism? Is what makes a film national a stylistic application of a particular genre (such as melodrama)? Does the allure of the film come from the construction of a hero-cult after a director deemed to be national? Queries or requests for any other use, or if a more substantial copy is required, should be directed in the owner(s) of the Intellectual Property Rights. i Abstract The Western image of Turks is identified with two distinctive stereotypes: ‘Terrible Turk’ and ‘Lustful Turk.’ These stereotypical images are deeply rooted in the history of the Ottoman Empire and its encounters with Christian Europe. Because of their fear of being dominated by Islam, European Christians defined the Turks as the wicked ‘Other’ against their perfect ‘Self.’ Since the beginning of Crusades, the Western image of Turks is associated with cruelty, barbarity, murderousness, immorality, and sexual perversion. These characteristics still appear in cinematic representations of Turks. In Western films such as Lawrence of Arabia and Midnight Express, the portrayals of Turks echo the stereotypes of ‘terrible Turk’ and ‘lustful Turk.’ This thesis argues that these stereotypes have transformed into a myth and continued to exist uniformly in Western contemporary cinema. The thesis attempts to ascertain the uniformity and consistency of the cinematic image of Turks and determine the associations between this image and the myths of ‘terrible Turk’ and ‘lustful Turk.’ To achieve this goal, this thesis examines the trajectory of the Turkish image in Western discourse between the 11th and 21st centuries. -

Openly gay himself, Ozpetek has license. challenged the celluloid closet that silenced or, at best, marginalized queerness in Italian film. As Elliott Stein concluded in 2008, Ozpetek's "oeuvre has been marked by a masterful handling of actors, often in densely populated ensemble stories involving characters from different backgrounds and sexual preferences." Ozpetek was born in Istanbul on February 3, 1959. He traveled to Italy to attend college in 1976 and has made his home there ever since. Ozpetek completed a university degree in film history at Rome's Sapienza University. Subsequently, he studied art history and costume design at the Navona Academy and then qualified as a director at the Accademia di Arte Drammatica "Silvio D'Amico." After a short collaboration with Julian Beck's Living Theatre, Ozpetek began his career as an assistant director in the early 1980s, working with important Italian directors including Massimo Troisi and Marco Risi. In 1996, Ozpetek directed his first movie, The Turkish Bath (Hamam; also released as Steam) which received excellent reviews at the Cannes Film Festival and became an immediate, unexpected hit. It was distributed in more than 20 countries. -

Turkish cinema Nezih Erdoğan Deniz Göktürk The first years Cinema, as a Western form of visual expression and entertainment, did not encounter resistance in Turkey, a country culturally and geographically bridging East and West. It perfectly represented the ambivalent attitudes of the national / cultural identity under construction. On one hand, cinema came as a sign of modernization / Westernization, not only for the images of the Westbeing projected onto the screen, but also for the condi- tions of its reception. Cinematography was a technological innovation imported from the West and the ritual of going to the movies became an important part of the modern urban experience. On the other hand, cinema offered possibilities for the production of a ‘national discourse’. Many of the early feature films reflect the ‘birth of a nation’ or resis- tance to the Allied Forces during World War I. The audience was already familiar with the apparatus (theatre, screen, figures, music and sound, light and shadow), which bore some resemblance to the traditional Turkish shadowplay Karagöz, one of the most popular entertainment forms of the past. Ayse Osmanoğlu, the daughter of Sultan Abdülhamid II, remembers that the French illusionist of the palace used to go to France once a year and return with some novelties to entertain the palace population; a film projector throwing lights and shadows on a wall was the most exciting of these spectacles. The first public exhibition took place in 1896 or 1897 in the Sponeck pub, which was frequented by non-Muslim minorities (namely Levantines), as well as Turkish intellectuals infatuated with the Western civilization in Pera (today Beyoğlu), a district in the European part of Istanbul known for its cosmopolitan character. -

The suspect claims he was drunk and can’t quite remember where the body was buried; field after field, they dig but discover only dirt. As the night draws on, tensions escalate, and individual stories slowly emerge from the weary small talk of the men. Nothing here is simple, and when the body is found, the real questions begin. At once epic and intimate, Ceylan’s latest explores the twisted web of truth, and the occasional kindness of lies. About the Film Once Upon a Time in Anatolia was the recipient of the Grand Prix at the Cannes film festival in 2011.
