D., Department of Sociology Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Mehmet C. Ecevit October 2005, 249 pages This thesis highlights the significance of patriarchal structures and their reproduction in women’s social position through the feminist perspective. Patriarchy is a dominant structure both on production and reproduction sphere. Patriarchy, which is a dominant structure in every sphere of social life has material basis and controls both women’s labour and sexuality. With this framework some concepts such as the types of women’s labour, paid and domestic labour, family, honour, violence and masculinity are used in order to understand patriarchy. Patriarchy is not a fixed structure; on the contrary it has been changed according to the different mode of production and different social and cultural structures in which it takes place. In the scope of this thesis, the examples of ‘social realist’ and ‘national cinema’ are analysed sociologically. The social, economic and political structure of Turkey in between 1960-70 has some special importance. In addition to that, the institution of cinema had some important changes at the same period. Meantime, it is important that not many studies were done in woman’s subordination for this period in Turkey. Not only woman’s subordination in the scope of patriarchy, but also mutual relations of men and the role of men in reproduction of patriarchy were analysed in the film analysis. Keywords: Patriarchy, Turkish Cinema, Socialist Realist and National Films. iv ÖZ TÜRK İYE’DE 1960-70 ARASI ATAERK İL YAPILAR VE PRAT İKLER: 1960’LARIN TOPLUMSAL GERÇEKÇ İ VE ULUSAL F İLMLER ÖRNE Ğİ Ye şildal Şen, Hatice Doktora, Sosyoloji Bölümü Tez Yöneticisi: Prof. Dr. Mehmet C. Ecevit Ekim 2005, 249 pages Bu tez, feminist perspektife ba ğlı olarak ataerkil yapılar ve bunların yeniden üretiminin kadının toplumsal konumun analizindeki önemine dikkat çekmektedir. Anahtar Kelimeler: Ataerkillik, Türk Sineması, Toplumsal Gerçekçi ve Ulusal Filmler. v To My Little Brother Erdal vi ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I thank all who have contributed towards this thesis. So the questions we will be constantly asking throughout the essay can be: Is what can be called part of national film culture and identity? Is defining a film part of national heritage a modernist act that is also related to theories of nationalism? Is what makes a film national a stylistic application of a particular genre (such as melodrama)? Does the allure of the film come from the construction of a hero-cult after a director deemed to be national? • Turkish Cinema
Turkish cinema Nezih Erdoğan Deniz Göktürk The first years Cinema, as a Western form of visual expression and entertainment, did not encounter resistance in Turkey, a country culturally and geographically bridging East and West. It perfectly represented the ambivalent attitudes of the national / cultural identity under construction. On one hand, cinema came as a sign of modernization / Westernization, not only for the images of the Westbeing projected onto the screen, but also for the condi- tions of its reception. Cinematography was a technological innovation imported from the West and the ritual of going to the movies became an important part of the modern urban experience. On the other hand, cinema offered possibilities for the production of a ‘national discourse’. Many of the early feature films reflect the ‘birth of a nation’ or resis- tance to the Allied Forces during World War I. The audience was already familiar with the apparatus (theatre, screen, figures, music and sound, light and shadow), which bore some resemblance to the traditional Turkish shadowplay Karagöz, one of the most popular entertainment forms of the past. Ayse Osmanoğlu, the daughter of Sultan Abdülhamid II, remembers that the French illusionist of the palace used to go to France once a year and return with some novelties to entertain the palace population; a film projector throwing lights and shadows on a wall was the most exciting of these spectacles. The first public exhibition took place in 1896 or 1897 in the Sponeck pub, which was frequented by non-Muslim minorities (namely Levantines), as well as Turkish intellectuals infatuated with the Western civilization in Pera (today Beyoğlu), a district in the European part of Istanbul known for its cosmopolitan character.

  • Haldun Taner Tiyatrosunda Metinlerarasi Okuma
Anahtar sözcükler: Okuma Eğitimi, Metinlerarasılık, Haldun Taner, Tiyatro Metinleri ABSTRACT: Reading is a skill that starts with literacy and develops until being a universal reader. Intertexuality is one of these skill levels. Intertextuality arose from the idea that all texts had a relation with previous texts. While the intertextual relations within a text is a fictional characteristic and a way of creativity, it is a way of analysis and explanation for the reader. The reader should be aware of the intertextual plot structure constructed by the author through his own previous reading experiences. Intertextual reader is a reader who has the reading culture.

Ali proposes to the fellow Turkish native to live with him in exchange for a monthly stipend. Ali’s son Nejat (Baki Davrak,) a university professor, seems disapproving about his boorish father’s choice. But the young German man quickly grows fond of kind Yeter, especially upon discovering most of her hard- earned money is sent home to Turkey for her daughter’s university studies. The accidental death of Yeter distances father and son even more, emotionally and physically. Nejat travels to Istanbul to begin an organized search for Yeter’s daughter, Ayten (Nurgul Yesilçay.) He decides to stay in Turkey and trades places with the owner of a German bookstore who goes home to Germany. What Nejat doesn’t know is that 20-something political activist Ayten is already in Germany, having fled the Turkish police.
