  • Shaping Sense Italian Post-War Functionalistic Design
Kjetil Fallan SHAPING SENSE ITALIAN POST-WAR FUNCTIONALISTIC DESIGN Thesis in fulfilment of the degree of cand. philol. (MA) Department of History / Centre for Technology and Society Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) Trondheim 2001 To my parents “We have never discussed it, but I think the main reason why we are reluctant to get married is all those dreadful presents you get and can not dispose of just like that. Every christmas, we get a little foretaste of that hell. Cathrine’s parents have gotten wind of our “interest in design”, so that is why the garish wrapping paper nor- mally contains something even more garish; rubbish from Alessi.” -Torgrim Eggen in Pynt Preface This project has been fatiguing in addition to being extremely interesting. I would never have finished it without the help and support from many persons: I wish to thank my supervisor Per Østby for taking on such a unorthodox project. His enthusiasm has been very important to me, and his experience crucial to my work. Øst- by and my co-supervisor Stig Kvaal have guided a sometimes frustrated candidate through the non-determined, multidirectional flux of writing history. Centre for Technology and Society has been my haunt the last two years. I am very thankful for the good working environment the centre has provided me with. I have shared office, problems and laughter with Jon N. Eikrem and Finn Arne Jørgensen. Jørgensen also deserves many thanks for his proofreading and formatting. I also wish to thank the staff at the Biblioteca Nazionale Braidense and the Settore Bib- lioteca, Documentazione, Archivio of the Triennale di Milano for being so helpful and service-minded.

  • In Focus: Milan, Italy the View on the City’S Tourism Industry Before and After Expo 2015
DECEMBER 2014 | PRICE €400 IN FOCUS: MILAN, ITALY THE VIEW ON THE CITY’S TOURISM INDUSTRY BEFORE AND AFTER EXPO 2015 Ezio Poinelli Director Paolo Buffa Senior Consultant www.hvs.com HVS MILAN | c/o Hemera Ventures, Blend Tower, Piazza 4 Novembre, 7, 20124 Milan, ITALY This article focuses on the Milan hospitality and tourism industry and the effect the hosting of the 2015 World Exposition is expected to have on the industry. Forecasts and impacts of the event are quite debated in the hospitality community and numbers mainly hypothetical until they will materialize, especially in the context of Italy’s complicate economic and social environment (persistent crisis, delays and scandals on the assignments of the works for Expo, etc). Despite the situation, various new hotel projects will be materializing in the next months and coming years in the greater area of Milan, aiming to leverage on Expo positive heritage and the expected possible recovery of the economy. Besides the Expo, it is very important to look at the fundamentals of the market, in order to assess how it will evolve and possibly benefit from the 6 months of global exposure, and finally how many rooms the market will be able to absorb. In writing this article, we utilise the expertise of HVS in each market to the full extent by combining our in- house data and research, interviews with opinion leaders, together with published information regarding the examined destination. City Overview Milan is Italy’s second largest city, the country’s business and financial centre, and a leader in technological and scientific research.

  • Firmamento Milano at Euroluce 2019
Firmamento Milano at Euroluce 2019 Firmamento Milano will participate for the first time at Euroluce, introducing its entire collection and its representative values. Now more than ever, Milan is in the international spot-light. Always the capital of a powerful industrial and commercial network, it is today reco- gnized worldwide as a vital hub of culture, art, creativity, and innovation – in other words, of knowledge. In Milan, knowledge means knowing how to learn, study, search, experiment, take action, change, and risk. The culture of our city means we never stop and never accept the obvious. On the contrary, we look everywhe- re for new solutions for living in beauty and for pursuing wealth as a way to live and let live with generosity of spirit. With these values, it’s easy to see why Milan has welcomed so many start-ups and experiments in architecture, design, and fashion. This is why we wanted the name of our company to include the name Milan, to reflect our city and its values, which we believe in so strongly. We also wanted our name to include Firmamento, meaning the firmament above us, the sky sparkling with ideas. Dreams. Values. Architects. Projects. Beauty. With the support of the prestigious architectural firms who work with us, as well as a remarkable group of medium-sized companies in our region who work in various market sectors, we want to replicate the valuable-model which made Italian design globally successful. There were big Milanese architects such as Zanuso, Magistretti Castiglioni, Albini, Helg, Sottsass… now together with us in this project we have: Pierluigi Cerri, Michele De Lucchi, Benedetta Miralles Tagliabue, Parisotto+Formenton, Park Associati, Daniela Puppa, Franco Raggi, Michele Reginaldi,Attilio Stocchi, Filippo Taidelli, Cino Zucchi.

Once the cover is storted we hope to go to print in Febrauary so get those comments in before February. Sorry at this late stage we can only take small amendments. There is an index at the end of the cataologue. Sorry it is too late to have an image entry this year if you have not yet booked it. Magazine Catalogue 2019 Introduction Welcome to our 2019 (and 80th birthday) magazine catalogue. We hope you find this special 80th anniversary catalogue a little different. We’ve decided to look backwards and forwards. We’ve included an article about our past and some of the magazine we have handled over the years. To the right is a picture of where it all started. Central Books continues to be Europe’s largest distributor of magazines to the book trade, galleries and other specialist outlets. Central Books have been handling magazines since we were established in 1939 and we’re delighted to note that Indie magazines and print are thriving, We – and our colleagues at Antenne Books - hope to continue bringing something different to your shelves for many years to come. We continue to add titles to our own list since the last catalogue. We think you’ll find them as compelling as we did when we took them on.

A bench could become a chaise longue where people of all backgrounds and opinions can interchange experiences; planters, bike racks or litter bins in lively colors could be put together in historical contexts, and also, tables and chairs encouraging interaction with friends and enjoying the outdoor air just like at the park. For the first time at the Milano Design Week, Vestre, Norway’s historical market leader in the production of furniture for towns, parks and outdoor public spaces, presented “Nordic Life in Urban Spaces”, an installation at Opificio 31 that opened the door to a culture – still by and large limited to the Nordics – that shares design and sociability, urban regeneration and collective spaces. An innovative street furniture vision for a rebirth of contemporary cities in an ecofriendly and creative way and for the project of clever and democratic Smart Cities in which people can live and share.
