REPORT FROM THE CABINET MEMBER FOR HIGHWAYS, TRANSPORT AND WASTE TO THE MEETING OF FULL COUNCIL ON WEDNESDAY, 21 SEPTEMBER 2011 Wightbus Wightbus ceased operations on Friday 2 September 2011 and all remaining drivers, escorts and management staff, who wished to do so, have now been transferred, under TUPE regulations, to Southern Vectis. Five Wightbus vehicles were sold to Southern Vectis and two further owned buses are currently awaiting sale. All other buses have been returned to the companies from which they were hired or to the leasing companies through which they were acquired. Community Transport Nine new bus services Island-wide, which benefit from Council community bus funding, commenced operations on 5 September 2011. Most of these replace routes formerly operated by Wightbus. Four of these services are operated using fully trained volunteer drivers supplied by the local community and more of these community-led services will in future also operate using volunteer drivers. Parish and Town Councils representing Cowes, Gurnard, Northwood, Havenstreet and Ashey, Wootton Bridge, Sandown, Chale, Niton and Whitwell, have led local involvement in the community bus scheme and been responsible for the recruitment of volunteer drivers. Whilst most of the community bus services that the Council has funded operate as part of a partnership with Southern Vectis that involves the use of their buses, there are two other local community groups – one in the Ventnor area that has already started service provision, and one in the west Wight that is due to start in December – that are sourcing vehicles independently. Hunnyhill / Hunnycross Way – Newport - Junction improvements required as part of the planning consent for the extension of Sainsburys will see turning lanes installed on Hunnycross Way, Foxes Road and Hunnyhill to help improve traffic flow and safety. The works are scheduled to commence towards the end of the month, which will require the use of temporary lights at times to protect the workforce, and are scheduled to be completed by 6 December. There will be disruption while the works are carried out but we have worked with Sainburys to ensure that the alterations begin now so as to avoid the busy Christmas period. Waste collection service Work continues to introduce the new waste collection service with purchasing of bins and vehicles underway, and communication with the public about the changes being progressed. Councillor Edward Giles Cabinet Member for Highways, Transport and Waste .
