MARKET REPORT MARCH 2021 Friday 19th March – Store Stock Market

 We are strongly encouraging all vendors to “drop & go”. Stock can be sold on “owner’s approval” - please ensure your contact details are on the entry form.  If in extreme cases (chiefly breeding stock) vendors feel strongly about staying to see their stock sold, only one person from a business may stay and they must leave as soon as their stock has been sold.  Everybody must enter via the main entrance and ensure they are wearing face coverings and have sanitised their hands.  We ask all people on site to adhere to strict social distancing measures reverting back to the 2m rule with a face covering.  No social visits can be permitted. Active buyers and sellers only, with just one representative per business allowed. No children allowed.

Store Steers to £1480 Store Heifers to £1270

Friday saw a tremendous quality entry of store cattle again sell to the ferocious trade seen of late with steers topping at a massive £1480 given for a pair of grand Aberdeen Angus bullocks (25m) from Martin Gillbard of Morchard Bishop whilst later born Angus steers (12m) from Richard Kent down from Surrey returned a very pleasing £1095 for a pen of five. More outstanding British Blue steers on offer this week with bunches of powerful sorts (22m) to £1465 for Chris Poad up from St Dominick with others of a similar age and standard reaching £1400 for Winston Thorne of Umberleigh and £1390 for EC Stanbury and Son of . A fine single red Limousin steer (22m) from Brian Vallance and Family of eased to a creditable £1400 with a matching pair of South and Limousin’s born around the same time and off the same lorry drew £1370 apiece. Bunches of well bred and farmed Stabiliser steers (23m) from Ian and Michael Widdicombe of Berry Pomeroy sold well and to £1270 and £1250 as did slightly older ones (24m) at £1230 from EC Stanbury and Son and John Congdon of Saltash. Simmental steers (21m) rose to £1205 for Martin and David Sampson of whilst Murray Grey’s (24m) reached £1150 for John Cullen of Bigbury and decent Devon bullocks (23m) fetched £110 for Wadhayes Farm Partners of Awliscombe. Holstein Friesian steers (24m) topped at £1045 for Martin Gillbard. A pair of shapely red Limousin heifers (23m) headed that section at £1270 apiece for Brian Vallance and Family again with a strong Simmental heifer (30m) from Richard Kent close at £1255 and a Blue of the same age making £1180 for Roy Baker of Kennford. A trio of eye catching South Devon females (22m) took home a decent £1180 a head for LJ Reddaway of Luton, Chudleigh whilst Herefords (21m) from Messrs Hawkins of Thorverton returned £1150 for a pair. A pen of six nicely marketed Aberdeen Angus heifers (19m) from Friend and Reeve of Sandford racked up £1120 each followed by a pen of three smart Blonde heifers (23m) at £1100 each for Martin Curtis of Plymouth. Holstein Friesian heifers ran to £1090 and £1010 for Peter Snell, Awliscombe and John Simmons of respectively. Grazing cows sold to a top of £1060 for a British Blue from P and O Jemmison of Brayford.

A similar show to last week met another rip roaring trade throughout. Limousin cross steers from Leo Bradford & family in from topped at £1,000 (11m) with others out of the same good stable just slightly younger obtaining £905. Peter Hunt up from Newton Abbot showed cracking South Devon steers (10m) which went on to achieve £870, Steve Barkwill in from Tavistock sold Limousin cross steers to £860 (11m) with Blues off the same good farm achieving the same figure. Shillingham Farm Partners up from Saltash saw Angus yearlings obtain £840, the same figure achieved from Michael Scott in from Drewsteignton this time with Blonde crosses (11m). Phil Tully of Brixham topped at £830 just in front of the Tully Farm Partnership, both with South Devon steers (11m). Young Blue dairy bred steers (8m) from Dascombe Farms topped at £770, the same price achieved for dairy bred Limousin cross steers from Andrew Barker from Dunsford who also went on to achieve £765 for similar sorts. Heifers topped at £835 for Rob Davis of Chagford with a pen of cracking Limousin crosses (11m), Steve Barkwill showed Blues which went on to achieve £790 whilst Blonde heifers from Michael Scott ran to £735, the same figure achieved for Raymond Brown of Woodbury selling Simmental cross heifers (9m). Dairy type yearlings from Jo Beare in from saw Charolais x heifers fetch £660, Hereford x to £655 and Angus x to £640. Robert and Christine Steer, Avonwick brought Limousin cross heifers (10m) which went on to level out at £600 with Campbell Hill of Torpoint showing Blonde cross heifers (10m) making £575.

Trade on fire and cattle looking very well sold with currently very strong buying power and more cattle needed to meet buyer demand.

Another decent entry of Calves saw a super trade for all but the very small crossbred Calves. Top of the day was £490 for the best of a smart run of weaned Limousin bulls from Messrs GJ & G Winzer & Sons of Loddiswell who sold others to £440, £355 and also an Aberdeen Angus bull to £430. Weaned British Blue bulls to £465 & £405 for Dallyns Dairy Ltd of Barnstaple with young Blue bulls to £370 for Messrs RH & MJ Hurford of . Charolais bulls a flying trade to £440 for Kathryn Starr with others to £360 & £320 for CALVES - 10.15 AM Messrs Gaden & Son of and £305 & Auctioneer: Mark Davis – 07773 371774 £260 for John Simmons of Poltimore. Friesians an easier trade than of late topping at £98 for Kathryn Starr with young British Friesian bulls to £85 & £62 twice for Richard & Rachel Risdon. Fleckvieh bulls to £248 & £242 twice for Messrs AM, KM & E Harvey of Totnes.

With prices firming and men about to buy them, more pig now being drawn back into our fortnightly auction. Friday morning saw fifty five cull sows average £155 with a top of £218 for a couple weighing in at 295kg apiece for Crealy Farms whilst cull boars reached £156 for one at 254kg from Robert Smith of Launceston. Heavyweight prime pigs ran to £178 for three averaging 176kg from RJ and SM Ovenell of Torrington with ones at 133kg to £152 for N Tope of Blackawton. Baconers to £100 for R Maltby of Dorchester whilst cutters reached £61 for MA Clarke of St Wenn.

Orphans to £46 Store Hoggs to £137.50 Grazers to £134 Breeders to £140 Double Couples to £255 & Singles to £198

121 ORPHAN LAMBS Another sizable entry of 121 orphan lambs sold to a much more difficult trade, especially for the small, young lambs but better end sorts least effected and sold to £46 for Edward Wilton of Blackawton, £35 for a pair from Katherine Bassett of South Brent and £29 for Sam Wright of . Straight 10-14 day old lambs anywhere from £8 to £20 with younger sorts £2-£10 and an overall average of £9.

**Reminder that lambs are to be at least a week old with dry navals and must have had their morning feed before coming to market**

1264 STORE HOGGS Still a decent number of store hoggs at 1264, sold to another fantastic trade with the quality dropping each week and nowhere near the strength of last week but an incredible average of £107 throughout. Top money in the hoggs at £137.50 for a pen of forward sorts from Andrew & Della Carter of Sidmouth followed by Tim Norman of Milverton with the best of his fine run selling at £136, £134.50 & £130 (x4), Jim & Jonathan Stephens of Sandford at £135 and Marshay Farms of Pennymoor selling two pens at £134.50. Plenty of short keep hoggs either side of £130 and medium keep hoggs either side of £120. Smaller and plainer sorts looking dearer than ever and usually all £88 regardless of breed with small welsh and scotch bred hoggs meeting great demand in the £80’s. If you’ve got them, let’s have them whilst there’s still enough here to draw 15-20 buyers each week from across Southern & Wales.

96 GRAZING EWES Almost 100 grazers met another great trade peaking at £134 for a Suffolk from Martin Pearse of who had another at £114, £126 for a Charollais ewe from Tricky Harding of who sold a pen of Texel crosses at £114, a sizable Suffolk cross ewe realised £125 for Alan & Gerry Luscombe of Bickington and Melanie Forward of Talaton sold her Zwartbles at £117.50.

36 BREEDING EWES A small offering of breeders saw three pens of smart empty NC Mule ewe hogg sell well and at £140 apiece for Graham Ward of Iddesleigh and a pen of Suffolk cross older ewes realised £124 for Ella Witteridge of Axminster. 294 EWES & 448 LAMBS (742 LIVES) More couples forward at 294 ewes with their 448 lambs were possibly a slightly easier trade for the mixed quality forward. Top of the doubles at £255 (£85/life) for an older Texel cross ewe with two smart Beltex sired lambs from Stephen Hyde of Calverleigh, £250 for a sizable lot of FM Suffolk and Texel cross doubles from Nick Harding of Torrington and £240 for similar from Alan & Gerry Luscombe. Rich Winzer of Ugborough sold FM Mule ewes woth youngish twins on for £230 and plenty of other straight farming doubles £200 to £225 or either side of £70 per life. Worthy of a mention were a pen of 8 Zwartbles x ewes with 13 Charollais sired lambs from Melanie Forward that realised £215 per outfit or £81.90 per life. Second quality doubles ranging from £150 to £198 whilst some third quality sorts were less than that but in need of some tlc. Singles still regularly either side of £80 per life for the better end topping at £198 (£99/life) again for Stephen Hyde who had others at £188 (£94/life) and there were several other lots at or over £180. Hill bred sorts starting to come forward in number and trading well from £28 to £58 per life depending on quality and shelly outfits looking chancey from £19 to £49 per life. Overall averages back slightly on the week at £164 per outfit or £65 per life.
