Newton Poppleford Harpford & Colaton Raleigh Our lovely River Otter looking over the flower baskets on Tipton St John bridge photo: thanks to Jeff Chapman St Luke St Gregory the Great St John the Baptist Newton Poppleford Harpford (BCP) Colaton Raleigh "Normal" Sunday services are unlikely to be happening for some while yet. A Sunday service on 'Zoom' is held at 10.00am each Sunday mainly for the congregations of Mark's 'patch' – the parishes of Newton Poppleford, Harpford, Colaton Raleigh and Tipton St John with Venn Ottery – though anyone with internet access is welcome to join in. Email Mark Ward (as below) to receive the link to join in. Ring a friend if you don't know how to use Zoom – more than half the population have learnt how to use it in the last few months. Mark is planning to follow this each Sunday with a simple said service in St Luke's Church, Newton Poppleford at 11.00am. Of course, this will have to follow the safety rules – hand sanitising on entry and exit, social distancing and wearing of face covering. No singing is permitted, so it won't be 'returning to normal' At present, chairs are set out at 2 metre distancing, so there is only space for some 20 people (depending on how many come as couples or family groups). You'll be welcomed if you do come, but please obey any instructions from the steward, and don't be disappointed if there is not enough room to fit you in safely. Colaton Raleigh Church is open for private prayer a couple of mornings a week – see the notice board on the church gate for updated days and times, and please respect the safety and distancing rules.

  • George Rowe Print Collection
George Rowe Print Collection George Rowe (1796-1864) was one of 19th century England's most prolific topographical print makers, many examples of whose work, notably of Cheltenham and Gloucestershire, are included in the Art Gallery & Museum's topographical print collection. Born at Exeter in 1796, and showing his artistic talent from an early age, Rowe earned his living as a drawing master, and was first recorded as such at Hastings in 1823. It was there that he produced his first known set of topographical prints, Twenty-six Views of Picturesque Scenery of Hastings and its Vicinity, which were published, as lithographs, by a Hastings librarian in 1823. Rowe produced many more views of Sussex and Kent before returning to Exeter, probably in 1826. At Exeter, he continued Frontispiece print from his teaching and produced many prints of Devon, notably of Rowe's ‘Illustrations’, 1840, Exeter and Plymouth, and of the county's seaside resorts, showing Cambray Spa. including Sidmouth, Torquay and Lynton, where he is said to have met his future wife, Philippa Curtis. In 1832, Rowe, his wife and two young children moved to Cheltenham, perhaps to escape a cholera outbreak at Exeter, and certainly to take advantage of the potential custom offered by the rapidly expanding spa town, where he was to live for the next 20 years. At Cheltenham, Rowe continued to give drawing lessons, and also established a 'Repository of Arts', at which he sold artists' materials and undertook general printing work. He also began to produce prints of the town, which were initially published by a local librarian, although by 1834 Rowe had acquired his own lithographic printing press and was able to publish his own work.

RINGING ROUND DEVON GUILD OF DEVONSHIRE RINGERS Newsletter 73: March 2009 EXETER CATHEDRAL BELLS AND RINGERS This year, churches of all denominations across Devon are celebrating 1100 years of the westward expansion of Christianity from the Diocese of Wessex at Sherborne to Devon in 909. Initially, the home of what became the Diocese of Exeter was Crediton, moving to Exeter in 1050. The Cathedral has organized a number of events for the year, the climax of which is a Celebration Day in Exeter on Saturday 27 June. So with the Cathedral as the seat of the Diocese and thus of the celebrations, it seemed appropriate to spotlight the Cathedral bells and ringers. The South Tower Andrew Digby illustrates the size of Grandisson The South Tower contains 14 bells that are hung for full circle change ringing. They are an eclectic mix of weights and ages and constitute the second or third heaviest ring of bells in the world (depending on definition). They are usually rung as a 12, with the two semitones allowing lighter combinations of 8 or 10 to be rung. The tenor, Grandisson is 72½ Cwt in Bb, and the treble is 6 Cwt. The oldest bell in the tower (the 4th) dates from 1616, and the newest (the Jubilee treble) was added in 1977. Several bells have been re-cast over the years; Grandisson itself was last re-cast in 1902. Ringing here is not for the faint-hearted. The bells are heavy and demanding, the ringing chamber is enormous and can seem intimidating, even after several visits, and the huge range of bell weights and sizes means that ropesight is quite a challenge.
