  • Saku Export 2019
SAKU BREWERY EXPORT PORTFOLIO A guide to the Estonian brewery and its beverages ESTONIA Refreshing drinks from pure nature stonia is a small country situated in the upper right E corner of the European Union. Our neighbours are Finland to the north, Sweden to the west, the other Baltic states to the south and Russia to the east. We feel closest in spirit to the Scandinavian countries through our national identity and Nordic climate. Estonia has a small population and its population density is quite low compared to that of Western Europe, which is why we have a lot of pure, untouched nature. About half of the country’s territory is covered with forests and bogs. The other half is mostly used for agricultural purposes; one tenth of this half is covered with densely populated areas. Our extensive agricultural background gives us a strong advantage in being a considerable player in the field of producing beer and other drinks. Brewing beer from cereals and distilling spirits have been our traditional industries for centuries. ESTONIANS A distinctive nation with distinctive tastes ith a population of a bit more than 1 million people, Estonia is one of W the least populated countries in the European Union and has enjoyed independence for just less than a hundred years. Nevertheless, as a nation, we have existed for many thousands of years, being dominated by Denmark, Germany, Sweden and Russia at different times. We have managed to preserve our language, culture and our distinctive national identity throughout all these eras. When it comes to Estonian food culture, we can’t say that Estonian cuisine is something extraordinary.

This book provides a unique and intriguing insight into current debates concerning the relationship between nation and state Jordan Paul as well as the political management of international image in today’s Europe through an examination of debates on nation branding and the Eurovision Song Contest. Europe is a con- tested construct and its boundaries are subject to redefinition. This work aims to advance critical thinking about contempo- rary nation branding and its relationship to, and influence on, Paul Jordan nation building. In particular it focusses on key identity debates The Modern Tale Fairy that the Eurovision Song Contest engendered in Estonia in the run-up to EU accession. The Eurovision Song Contest is an event which is often dismissed as musically and culturally The Modern Fairy Tale: inferior. However, this work demonstrates that it has the capac- ity to shed light on key identity debates and illuminate wider Nation Branding, National Identity socio-political issues. Using a series of in-depth interviews with and the Eurovision Song Contest political elites, media professionals and opinion leaders, this book is a valuable contribution to the growing field of research in Estonia on nation branding and the Eurovision Song Contest. Irritational Aesthetics: Reality Friction and Indecidable Theatre Tony Perucci Theatre Journal, Volume 70, Number 4, December 2018, pp. 473-498 (Article) Published by Johns Hopkins University Press For additional information about this article https://muse.jhu.edu/article/715917 Access provided by The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (31 Jan 2019 16:42 GMT) Irritational Aesthetics: Reality Friction and Indecidable Theatre Tony Perucci No one was quite sure if they were supposed to take the electoral campaign seriously or not. Was it a genuine run at political power or was it all a put-on? One political commentator declared that “nobody” knew if it was for real, while another angrily confessed, “I don’t understand what this is at all. It’s like ringing an alarm bell. Why ring bells for the heck of it?”1 The subject of these television news pundits was not an American reality television show star’s presidential campaign, but the Estonian theatre company Teater NO99 and their “megaproject,” NO75 Unified Estonia(2010). For forty-four days, NO99 tantalized Estonians with the possibility that they would form an actual new political party at their party assembly on May 7, 2010 at Saku Suurhall stadium in the capital of Tallinn. In front of a capacity crowd of 7,200, their massive theatrical spectacle appeared to teeter on the brink of becoming an actual “political force”—a registered political party that would run parliamentary candidates in the upcoming national election. However, in the final moments of their performance, NO99 stepped back from the precipice of the theatrical frame.
