Public Opinion Monitoring PUBLIC OPINION MONITORING Public Opinion Monitoring of the State of the Russian Society As in the previous issues, we publish the results of the monitoring of public opinion concern- ing the state of the Russian society conducted by VolRC RAS in the Vologda Oblast1. The following tables show the dynamics of several parameters indicating the social feeling and socio-political sentiment of the Vologda Oblast population in February – April 2018, and also on average for the latest six polls (June 2017 – April 2018). These data are compared with the data for 2007 (the last year of Vladimir Putin’s second presidential term, when the assess- ment of the President’s work was the highest) and for 2011 (the last year of Dmitry Medvedev’s presidency). The yearly dynamics of the data are presented beginning from 2014. In February – April 2018, the level of approval of the work of the President of the Russian Federation was 68%, which corresponds to an average annual indicator for 2015–2017. The share of negative evaluations of the President’s work for the past two months decreased by 3 p.p. (from 21 to 18%). The level of support of the work of the Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federa- tion in February – April 2018 was 48–50%, which is a bit lower than in 2014–2016 (52–58%). The proportion of negative assessments in the past two months decreased by 3 p.p. (from 31 to 28%). For reference: according to VTsIOM, the share of positive assessments of the President’s work nationwide amounted to 82–83% in January – April 2018 (the share of negative judgments was 11%). According to Levada-Center, the support of the head of state from February to April increased by 5 p.p. (from 76 to 81%), the share of negative assessments decreased by p.p. (from 22 to 19%). 1 The polls are held six times a year in Vologda, Cherepovets, and in eight districts of the oblast (Babayevsky District, Velikoustyugsky District, Vozhegodsky District, Gryazovetsky District, Kirillovsky District, Nikolsky District, Tarnogsky District and Sheksninsky District). The method of the survey is a questionnaire poll by place of residence of respondents. The volume of a sample population is 1,500 people 18 years of age and older. The sample is purposeful and quoted. The representativeness of the sample is ensured by the observance of the proportions between the urban and rural population, the proportions between the inhabitants of settlements of various types (rural communities, small and medium-sized cities), age and sex structure of the Oblast’s adult population. Sampling error does not exceed 3%. More information on the results of VolRC RAS polls is available at http://www.vscc.ac.ru/. There were no substantial changes in the assessment of success of the President’s work on addressing the key problems of the country over the past two months: – the share of those who think that the President successfully copes with the task of strengthening international positions of Russia is 55–56%; – the share of those who believe that the President is successful in protecting democracy and strengthening citizens’ freedoms is 43%; – the share of those who believe that the President successfully copes with the task of economic recovery and promotes the increase in the welfare of citizens is 31%. Among the tangible changes that occurred in February – April 2018, we should note the increase in the proportion of Vologda Oblast residents who believe that the President successfully copes with the problem of restoring order in the country (by 3 p.p., from 51 to 54%). This is much higher than in 2014–2017 (48–50%) and considerably higher than in 2011 (37%). It should be noted that, on average, over the past six surveys, the assessment of the President’s success in solving key problems of the country roughly corresponds to the level of 2007 (the difference makes 1–2 p.p.). This applies to all problems, except for the “economic recovery and the growth of the welfare of citizens”: the proportion of people who positively assess the work of the head of state in this direction was 47% in 2007 and on average over the past six surveys – 31% (it decreased by 16 p.p.). 232 Volume 11, Issue 2, 2018 Economic and Social Changes: Facts, Trends, Forecast PUBLIC OPINION MONITORING In your opinion, how successful is the RF President in coping with challenging issues?* (percentage of respondents) Average Dynamics (+/-), June Aug. It is less than in 2011–2017 (30–34%), however, it is still significantly higher than in 2007 (18%). How to use the Atlas The Atlas has two map sections The Main Section shows the location of Russia’s intact forest landscapes. The Thematic Section shows their tree species composition in two different ways. The legend is placed at the beginning of each set of maps. If you are looking for an area near a town or village Go to the Index on page 153 and find the alphabetical list of settlements by English name. The Cyrillic name is also given along with the map page number and coordinates (latitude and longitude) where it can be found. Capitals of regions and districts (raiony) are listed along with many other settlements, but only in the vicinity of intact forest landscapes. The reader should not expect to see a city like Moscow listed. Villages that are insufficiently known or very small are not listed and appear on the map only as nameless dots. If you are looking for an administrative region Go to the Index on page 185 and find the list of administrative regions. The numbers refer to the map on the inside back cover. Having found the region on this map, the reader will know which index map to use to search further. If you are looking for the big picture Go to the overview map on page 35. This map shows all of Russia’s Intact Forest Landscapes, along with the borders and Roman numerals of the five index maps. If you are looking for a certain part of Russia Find the appropriate index map. These show the borders of the detailed maps for different parts of the country.

Lineva: the hundredth anniversary of her field recordings,” a conference of both a scholarly and applied nature was held on November 23-25th, 2001 in the old Russian city of Vologda. Evgeniia Eduardovna Lineva (1853-1919) occupies a special place in Russian and American culture. In the 1890s she and her husband, a political émigré, lived in America. There Lineva, a professional singer, organized a Russian folk choir which performed successfully at the Chicago Universal Exhibition held to mark the four-hundredth anniversary of Columbus’ discovery of America. After her return home Lineva took a more serious interest in Russian folk song, undertaking a number of folklore expeditions to various parts of the country. To Lineva belongs the distinction of being the first to use the phonograph to record folk songs. She used it on her first expedition in 1897 to villages in Nizhnii Novogord, Kostroma, Simbirsk, Tambov and Voronezh provinces. In 1901 the folklorist traveled to the Kirillovo-Belozersk area of Novgorod Province, now part of Vologda Oblast’. One result outcome was the collection Velikorusskie pesni v narodnoi garmonizatsii [Russian songs in their folk harmonization] (pt 1, St. Petersburg, 1904; pt 2, St. Petersburg, 1909), in which the music was deciphered to the highest professional standards. It was the centenary of that expedition of 1901 that prompted the conference. The conference was not the only event commemorating Lineva held in the Vologda area: S.

The paper is devoted to the problem of adaptation and restoration of monastic structures, churches and temples without complete dismantling of the elements of the main load-bearing structures, using technologies and methods of work that allow delicately and effectively restoring the most important elements of buildings. The progress of work on the restoration of the hipped roof, using the lifting method - lifting the load-bearing part of the cribbed roof structure, is accurately and consistently described in the paper, as well as flexibility and efficiency in choosing a new solution for lifting, taking into account the features of the object identified during the work. The work on raising the roof was carried out during the course of adapting the building to modern use, based on the needs of the Kirillo-Belozersky museum-reserve. 1 Introduction Kirillo-Belozersky historical, architectural and art museum-reserve is located in the Kirillov city of Vologda region. The history of its creation dates back to 1924, and at first it was a branch (department) of the Cherepovets district provincial Museum. In 1926, it was transferred to the Main Science Department of People’s Commissariat for Education and became an independent Museum, and in 1929 the first permanent exhibition was opened [13].

This article covers a brief overview of the developing community from medieval through modern times, and then focuses the majority of its attention on the church ar- chitecture of Belozersk. This rich tradition of material culture increases our knowledge about medieval and early modern Rus’ and Russia. Keywords Beloozero – Belozersk – Russian Architecture – Church Architecture The origins and early location of Belozersk (now a regional town in the center of Vologda oblast’) are subject to discussion, but it is uncontestably one of the oldest recorded settlements among the eastern Slavs. “Beloozero” is mentioned in the Primary Chronicle (or Chronicle of Bygone Years; Povest’ vremennykh let) under the year 862 as one of the five towns granted to the Varangian brothers Riurik, Sineus and Truvor, invited (according to the chronicle) to rule over the eastern Slavs in what was then called Rus’.1 1 The Chronicle text in contemporary Russian translation is as follows: “B гoд 6370 (862). И изгнaли вapягoв зa мope, и нe дaли им дaни, и нaчaли caми coбoй влaдeть, и нe былo cpeди ниx пpaвды, и вcтaл poд нa poд, и былa у ниx уcoбицa, и cтaли вoeвaть дpуг c дpугoм. И cкaзaли: «Пoищeм caми ceбe князя, кoтopый бы влaдeл нaми и pядил пo pяду и пo зaкoну».

  • Public Opinion Monitoring
PUBLIC OPINION MONITORING Public Opinion Monitoring of the State of the Russian Society As in the previous issues, we publish the results of the monitoring of public opinion concerning the state of the Russian society conducted by VolRC RAS in the Vologda Oblast 1. The following tables show the dynamics of a number of parameters of social well-being and socio- political moods of the region’s population based on the results of the last “wave” of monitoring (Febru- ary 2021), as well as for the period from December 2019 to February 2021 (last 6 polls). We compare the results of the surveys with the data for 2000 (the first year of V. Putin’s first presi- dential term), 2007 (the last year of V. Putin’s second presidential term, when the assessment of the President’s work was the highest), 2011 (the last year of Dmitry Medvedev’s presidency), and 2012 (the first year of V. Putin’s third presidential term). We also provide yearly dynamics of the data for 2018–2020. In December 2020 – February 2021, the level of approval of the work of the President of the Russian Federation did not change significantly. The share of positive assessments is 50–52%, negative – 31–33%, which is slightly lower than in February 2020 when the share of positive assessments of the President’s work was 45% (negative – 31%)2. In yearly dynamics, there is a continuing decrease of positive assessments: in 2018 – 66%, 2019 – 56%, 2020 – 52%; in February 2021 – 50%. 1 The polls are held six times a year in Vologda, Cherepovets, and in eight districts of the oblast (Babayevsky District, Velikoustyugsky District, Vozhegodsky District, Gryazovetsky District, Kirillovsky District, Nikolsky District, Tarnogsky District, and Sheksninsky District).
