October 07, 1996 Concept Statement TRUE COLORS (working title) is a biographical story of part of the life of a young man who is stricken with the disease AIDS. This young man, Danny Keel, has one last dream, to die in the theatre. The theatre is where he has always found his hopes and dreams, his friends and family, and most importantly the love of his life. This is partially a memory play and partially a present-time lounge act. For his final bow he must tell his story, instead of using other people's words. The audience is made up partially of friends and family and partially strangers. Danny simply wants to bring some happiness into people's lives while giving them some thing to think about at the same time. This also allows him to bring some closure to his life by getting some things off his chest that have been haunting him for years. In many ways, just as Torn Wingfield, not to mention Tennessee Williams, does in THE GLASS MENAGERIE. He speaks about the loss of his mother when he was young, the meeting and then loss of his lover as he got older. -

Fisher Center for the Performing Arts at Bard College Chair Jeanne Donovan Fisher It’s a pleasure to welcome you to the Fisher Center for the world premiere of Dan Hurlin’s President Leon Botstein Demolishing Everything with Amazing Speed, based on four puppet plays by the Italian presents futurist artist Fortunato Depero (1892–1960). The production is part of the annual Bard SummerScape Festival, which this year celebrates the life and work of Giacomo Puccini. Depero and Puccini were contemporaries, though their aesthetic interests could hardly World Premiere have been more opposite. The futurists were self-declared revolutionaries, who took inspiration from the technological advances of the early 20th century to imagine an art of the future, celebrating new frontiers of ingenuity and possibility. For Depero and his DEMOLISHING allies, Puccini represented the decedent past, his grand operas mired in a neoclassical dependence on psychology and emotion. The futurists strove to create a dehumanized art that celebrated speed, automation, and mechanized warfare. They dreamed of theater EVERYTHING WITH and dance that required no human performers, and created plans for elaborate, abstract ballets and plays with machines and marionettes—few of which were ever staged. These included the four scenarios by Depero, known collectively as Dramma Plastico Futurista AMAZING SPEED (Futurist Plastic Theater), which you will see produced for the first time, almost a century after their composition in 1917. When I first read this play, I thought it was so dead-on, that I was Cygnet Theatre Company convinced that it was written specifically about the restaurant in New York presents City that I worked at, Stephanie’s, on the Upper East Side. We waited on our loyal regulars, including the Three-Lemon Lady, who required three lemons, NOT two, in her iced tea at luncheon, while her chauffeur waited in the car, discreetly parked just out of view of the front window. Or Mr. Dewars and his “son” who wanted his Dewars and rocks waiting for him on his table before he was seated. Or the celebs that I had the “pleasure” to wait on, Bernadette Peters, Jennifer Beals, Bobby Short, and a truly memorable time waiting on Elia Kazan and Robert Lewis drunkenly arguing over who was the better Blanche Dubois: Vivien Leigh or Jessica Tandy (I kid you not) while screaming that their ashtray wasn’t emptied promptly enough! It was truly a wild time in my life that was as funny while I was going through it as it is by becky mode upon remembering the dull brunches and late dinners. For those who have never been “backstage” at a restaurant, don’t be fooled. -

Contact: Allison Rawlings Director of Communications (310) 966-2412 [email protected] ARIEL AWARD WINNER DEMIÁN BICHIR AND OBIE AWARD WINNER SHANNON COCHRAN JOIN FORCES IN BY THE WATERS OF BABYLON Acclaimed Mexican Actor Bichir Makes US Theatrical Debut at the Geffen Playhouse Richard Seyd Directs New Work by Robert Schenkkan, Pulitzer Prize Winner for The Kentucky Cycle Opens Wednesday, November 5 at 7:30pm LOS ANGELES, August 28, 2008 — The Los Angeles premiere of Pulitzer Prize winner Robert Schenkkan’s By the Waters of Babylon brings two award-winning, long-time theater actors to the Geffen stage for the first time: Demián Bichir and Shannon Cochran. Bichir, who is currently starring as Mary Louise-Parker’s love interest on Showtime’s Weeds, will play the role of Arturo, a Cuban immigrant who is hired to (coincidentally) weed the garden of unconventional Austin widow Catherine. Cochran, who will star as Catherine, is straight from Chicago where she starred in sold out performances of The Lion in Winter at the Writers Theatre. While both actors will be making their Geffen Playhouse debut with this production, Bichir – who comes from one of the most well- known theatrical families in Mexico, will be making his US stage debut. On screen Bichir is already becoming familiar to American audiences; in addition to his role on Weeds, Bichir recently portrayed Fidel Castro in Steven Soderbergh’s Che Guevara biopics The Argentine and Guerilla. In his home country, Bichir’s film Sexo, Pudor y Lágrimas held the box office record for number one movie in Mexico for three years straight, and he has been awarded numerous honors ranging from the prestigious Ariel Award for Best Actor to a medal presented by the cultural commission in Mexico City for distinction in the arts.
