Artistic Director Jack Viertel today announced that Lear deBessonet would join the artistic team at City Center as Encores! Resident Director. In this new role, deBessonet will join Viertel and Music Director Rob Berman as an active member of the Encores! team. She will take part in all discussions surrounding repertoire, production artists, and casting— cultivating relationships with artists new to the series. She will also foster an open dialogue with today’s expanding audience around the social and political themes associated with the genre. AS YOU LIKE IT, the First Production of Our 50Th Anniversary Season, and the First Show in Our Shakespearean Act
Welcome It is my pleasure to welcome you to AS YOU LIKE IT, the first production of our 50th anniversary season, and the first show in our Shakespearean act. Shakespeare’s plays have been a cornerstone of our work at CSC, and his writing continues to reflect and refract our triumphs and trials as individuals and collectively as a society. We inevitability turn to Shakespeare to express our despair, bewilderment, and delight. So, what better place to start our anniversary year than with the contemplative search for self and belonging in As You Like It. At the heart of this beautiful play is a speech that so perfectly encapsulates our mortality. All the world’s a stage, and we go through so many changes as we make our exits and our entrances. You will have noticed many changes for CSC. We have a new look, new membership opportunities, and are programming in a new way with more productions and a season that splits into what we have called “acts.” Each act focuses either on a playwright or on an era of work. It seemed appropriate to inaugurate this with a mini-season of Shakespeare, which continues with Fiasco Theater's TWELFTH NIGHT. Then there is Act II: Americans dedicated to work by American playwrights Terrence McNally (FIRE AND AIR) and Tennessee Williams (SUMMER AND SMOKE); very little of our repertoire has focused on classics written by Americans. This act also premieres a new play by Terrence McNally, as I feel that the word classic can also encapsulate the “bigger idea” and need not always be the work of a writer from the past. -

Pump Boys, running July 16 – 19, will be directed by Lear deBessonet and choreographed by Danny Mefford. Jeanine Tesori is the Encores! Pump Boys and Dinettes was conceived, written and performed by John Foley, Mark Hardwick, Debra Monk, Cass Morgan, John Schimmel and Jim Wann. The show is a musical tribute to life on the roadside, with the actors accompanying themselves on guitar, piano, bass, fiddle, accordion, and kitchen utensils. A hybrid of country, rock and pop music, Pump Boys is the story of four gas station attendants and two waitresses at a small-town dinette in North Carolina. It premiered Off-Broadway at the Chelsea West Side Arts Theatre in July 1981 and opened on Broadway on February 4, 1982 at the Princess Theatre, where it played 573 performances and was nominated for both Tony and Drama Desk Awards for Best Musical. THE ARTISTS Jordan Dean (Jackson) appeared on Broadway in Mamma Mia!, Cymbeline and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. -

October 07, 1996 Concept Statement TRUE COLORS (working title) is a biographical story of part of the life of a young man who is stricken with the disease AIDS. This young man, Danny Keel, has one last dream, to die in the theatre. The theatre is where he has always found his hopes and dreams, his friends and family, and most importantly the love of his life. This is partially a memory play and partially a present-time lounge act. For his final bow he must tell his story, instead of using other people's words. The audience is made up partially of friends and family and partially strangers. Danny simply wants to bring some happiness into people's lives while giving them some thing to think about at the same time. This also allows him to bring some closure to his life by getting some things off his chest that have been haunting him for years. In many ways, just as Torn Wingfield, not to mention Tennessee Williams, does in THE GLASS MENAGERIE. He speaks about the loss of his mother when he was young, the meeting and then loss of his lover as he got older. -

Sacramento Theatre Company Study Guide The Pump Boys and Dinettes By Jim Wann, Mark Hardwick, Debra Monk, Cass Morgan, John Schimmel, and John Foley Study Guide Materials Compiled by Anna Miles 1 Sacramento Theatre Company Mission Statement The Sacramento Theatre Company (STC) strives to be the leader in integrating professional theatre with theatre arts education. STC produces engaging professional theatre, provides exceptional theatre training, and uses theatre as a tool for educational engagement. Our History The theatre was originally formed as the Sacramento Civic Repertory Theatre in 1942, an ad hoc troupe formed to entertain locally-stationed troops during World War II. On October 18, 1949, the Sacramento Civic Repertory Theatre acquired a space of its own with the opening of the Eaglet Theatre, named in honor of the Eagle, a Gold Rush-era theatre built largely of canvas that had stood on the city’s riverfront in the 1850s. The Eaglet Theatre eventually became the Main Stage of the not- for-profit Sacramento Theatre Company, which evolved from a community theatre to professional theatre company in the 1980s. Now producing shows in three performance spaces, it is the oldest theatre company in Sacramento. After five decades of use, the Main Stage was renovated as part of the H Street Theatre Complex Project. Features now include an expanded and modernized lobby and a Cabaret Stage for special performances. The facility also added expanded dressing rooms, laundry capabilities, and other equipment allowing the transformation of these performance spaces, used nine months of the year by STC, into backstage and administration places for three months each summer to be used by California Musical Theatre for Music Circus.
