Photo Source: Dianna Bush The only reason Patrick Hinds launched “Theater People,” his biweekly podcast of one-on-one interviews with Broadway’s biggest stars, was that he wanted a podcast like that to exist.

“It really happened because I was a podcast nerd,” the host and creator recently told Backstage. “I was obsessed.” Although theater-related interview series had emerged here and there on the airwaves, Hinds—“a theater lover but not an actor”—found himself craving in-depth conversations with the artists he admired on the Broadway stage. Thanks to “Theater People,” those conversations with Tony Award-winning actors, from Michael Cerveris to Renée Elise Goldsberry to , are now available to thespians everywhere.

Other than to reach out on Facebook or Twitter.” 9 Apps All Actors Should Have Through various friends of friends, Hinds eventually booked early guests, including Annaleigh Ashford and Michael Urie, by reaching out—and simply asking. “The theater community in is small and people wanted this to exist,” he said. Is network news appointment television for you? I didn't think so. Are you constantly angered that ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT only talks about theatre when a Hollywood star joins a cast or someone falls 30 feet to the stage floor? Me too. Well, I have an alternative that just might satisfy your news and theatre cravings; podcasting. Isn't that just what hipsters do between their shift at Starbucks and another trip to the thrift shop? Well, yes and no. I'm sure there is a barista in Portland who is currently recording a missive bemoaning mass media's attempt to co-opt the indie subculture, but most people who do podcasts well are incredibly informed and passionate ⚏ TICKET CENTRAL BROWSE ALL SHOWS about their specific topics. Save $$$ on Tickets to: SCHOOL OF ROCK As a compulsive consumer of many different types of podcasts (theatre, TV, news, sports), I HOLIDAY INN wanted to introduce the BroadwayWorld readers to the best theatre-centric podcasts the THE CHERRY ORCHARD internet has to offer. I have divided the podcasts up into six three-show categories (New York, OSLO Educational, Organizations, Honorable Mention, Podcasts that Need Resurrection, and Non- LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Theatre Podcasts for Theatre Fans), and then threw in two more to round things out. The selections are listed in no particular order (can you figure out which are my favorites though?). BLOGS

FULL DISCRETION DIAMOND DALE Grosses Analysis - Review: TROILUS Broadway Radio: This Week on Broadway 8/22 AND CRESSIDA Host: Peter Filichia, James Marino, and Michael Portantiere Average Length: about 75 min | New Episode Frequency: Every Sunday

Official Description: "A series of discussions about Broadway and theater around the world." REVIEW ROUNDUPS GUEST BLOG Barbra Streisand's Sarah Osman - My Take: This weekly show is in the "Full Discretion" category, because "This Week on ENCORE Album- #ThesFest16! - Broadway" has been a part of BroadwayWorld Radio for years. That being said, Peter, James, Available Tomorrow! International Thespian and Michael provide a thoughtful and thorough look at everything going on in the New York theatre community. NEW YORK THEATRE NEWS, REVIEWS, and INTERVIEWS

Theater People Podcast Host: Patrick Hinds Average Length: about 45 min | New Episode Frequency: Every other Sunday

Official Description: "Patrick Hinds interviews stars from Broadway, Off-Broadway, and 's downtown theater scene, as well as HOT NEWS the writers, directors, and other creative types that make the magic 1 happen on stage."

My Take: The infectious passion and enthusiasm that Patrick brings to each interview (and theatre in general) allows fans to feel as if they themselves are in the room with some of Broadway's biggest stars. However, Patrick is able to keep his fanboying in check long enough to ask great questions that tell us more about these artists than we've learned in traditional Streisand & Pine Take interviews. Sometimes I like to play the podcast at 11:30pm and pretend it is Broadway's very on own late-night talk show. 2 Recent Guests: , Annaleigh Ashford, Laura Osnes, Daisy Eagan, Michael Urie, Andrew Keenan-Bolger, and Anika Larsen.

Maxamoo's New York City Theater Podcast Host: Lindsay Barenz and friends MISS SAIGON Sets US Movie Theatre Average Length: Varies from 20 min to an hour-plus | New Episode Date Frequency: Generally multiple episodes per week. 3 Official Description: "Conversations about New York City theater, mostly beyond Broadway, hosted by Maxamoo's founder, Lindsay Barenz, about what's amazing, what's awful, and what we recommend on stage right now."

My Take: This is the podcast you and your theatre friends would make if you were all super Jennifer Holliday Back to Bway in smart, super funny, a little vulgar, and could afford to go see every show in New York. The COLOR PURPLE Maxamoo crew is full of opinions and stories, and they aren't afraid to share them; which is great for all of us that listen. With a focus primarily away from Broadway, they tell you about the shows and news that perhaps otherwise might slip through the cracks.

Recent Topics: THE LIBRARY, Steven Soderbergh, Encore's MOST HAPPY FELLA (which was the subject of a contentious and hilarious debate), and an interview with Brian Lobel.

Go See a Show Host: Robert A. K. Gonyo Average Length: 5-15 min | New Episode Frequency: Every one or two weeks

Official Description: "The 'Go See a Show!' podcast is (as far as I can tell) the only podcast dedicated to the off-off-Broadway scene in New York City. Every week, I interview an artist making theatre in NYC, discussing the ideas and process behind their work."

My Take: What qualifies as Off-Off- is very open to interpretation, and Robby covers it all. From steampunk musicals to plays in undisclosed locations to shows that he is actually in, Robby takes you behind the scenes of the shows that don't get a whole lot of publicity. I love this podcast not only because it is clear that Robby loves theatre (which is pretty http://www.broadwayworld.com/article/BWW-Roundup-Top-20-Podcasts-for-Theatre-Fans-20140421 2/8 8/25/2016 Member Spotlight: How Patrick Gets to Interview Broadway | Show Score

Ever wonder what it's like to start your own theater podcast? Meet Show-Score member Patrick 6085, who did just that! Read on to find out what his journey was like, and even pick up a few tips.

Patrick and a podcast guest | By Patrick Hines When Patrick Hinds was in 8th grade, he got a front row seat to the touring production of the rock musical, "The Who's Tommy". According to Patrick, that show was "a revelation" and ended up sparking his love for theater. He joined his school's drama club, took classes at Conservatory, and made friends in the theater program at Emerson College. Although he ultimately decided that a career onstage wasn't for him, his passion for theater never wavered.

In addition to being a lifelong theater fan, "I've always been a person who loves nonfiction," Patrick explains, including books and documentary films. That love extended to podcasts, which he started listening to during his commute to and from work. Several years ago, he discovered a now-defunct podcast called Downstage Center that featured interviews with theater artists by a theater professional. There were a lot of Broadway-related podcasts popping up, but none https://www.show-score.com/blog/member-spotlight-how-patrick-gets-to-interview-broadway-stars-like-lin-manuel-miranda 1/7 8/25/2016 Member Spotlight: How Patrick Gets to Interview Broadway | Show Score featured a fan sitting down in a one-on-one conversation with an artist. That gap inspired Patrick to stop by his local B&H Photo Video store, purchase some audio equipment, and start his own podcast, Theater People.

Patrick behind the scenes with his daughter Daisy

To secure his first few interviewees, Patrick asked friends from his theater days at Emerson College to recruit podcast guests. A friend who was in the ensemble of Kinky Boots introduced him to cast mates and friends, which is how he scored Tony award winners Cady Huffman (), Annaleigh Ashford (Kinky Boots), and Daisy Eagan (The Secret Garden) for early interviews. This created instant momentum and convinced more people like Michael Urie (Ugly Betty) and Lin Manuel-Miranda () to come on as well.

Patrick poses with Lin-Manuel Miranda

When asked if he was nervous when he first started, Patrick replies, "Not really. I figured that if people like the podcast, great! But if not, we'll do it for ourselves until we don't like it anymore." His hard work paid off, with listeners responding positively and Theater People growing into a popular podcast featuring long-form interviews with Broadway stars such as Danny Burstein (), Laura Benanti (), and Anthony Rapp (). It's even been listed as one of Buzzfeed's Top 22 Best Pop Culture Podcasts.

Patrick and a guest

Now Patrick is producing two podcasts in addition to Theater People and busier than ever. His daily routine is "pretty crazy, now that I'm producing three separate podcasts." Most mornings, he wakes up at six in the morning to get his daughter, Daisy, off to school. During the day, he's booking podcast guests, recording interviews, and writing for his blog. In the evenings, he attends three shows a week in order to familiarize himself with the work of upcoming guests. All the work hasn't changed how he much he enjoys shows; at the end of the day, Patrick still considers himself an extremely lucky fan.

The guest list is chock full of incredible talent. They include Lesli Margherita, Lindsay Mendez, Eden Espinosa and Laura Osnes.

The best part? For all of this, it will cost you $10....No seriously, $10. For 10 singles, 2 $5 bills or 1 Alexander Hamilton, you can attend the best fan experience of the summer.

I had a chance to talk to Patrick Hinds about where the idea for the Summer Series came from, the work that goes into it and what the future holds for this series.

CP: Where did the idea for the summer series come from?

PH: The credit here goes to our Producer, Mike Jensen. Around March, I was trying to come up with ways to build on the momentum we were building—for some reason we seemed to be getting a lot of press at that time—and Mike suggested that we do a series of http://www.onstageblog.com/columns/2016/7/14/how-a-podcast-created-the-must-attend-event-of-the-summer 2/6 8/25/2016 How a Podcast Created the Must-Attend Event of the Summer — OnStage live shows over the summer. I knew right away that it was a brilliant idea. It was important to me that we find a way to do it cheaply so that we could make it affordable to everyone. I didn’t want it to be a situation where it would be, like, a $25 cover and then another $25 minimum at the table. So we decided to produce the events ourselves. We went out and bought a sound system, figured out how to sell tickets, put together a concessions bar, and reserved space at Pearl Studios. Doing it that way enabled us to charge just $10 and gave us complete creative control. It’s WAY more work than we expected, but it’s tons of fun, and everyone from the fans to the artists seem to be having a really good time.

CP: The response seems to have been really popular. What have you been hearing from your fans?

PH: From the beginning of putting together the summer series, our mission was to bring well known theater artists and fans together in unique and affordable ways. One of the ways we’ve done that is by creating a pre-show party where guests mingle and meet each other. The artist will usually join us for a while during the party to meet fans and take pictures & sign

LINDSAY MENDEZ AND PATRICK HINDS CDs. I should also point out that we’ve had people come from as far away as Hawaii for the shows, which completely Review: “Steve Got Raped” blows my mind. From the feedback we’re getting, I’d say that we’ve accomplished our goal at FringeNYC 2016 of bringing the fans and the artists together in a really fun and exciting way. I’ve also seen Read More → true friendships sprout up between the people who have come to multiple shows, so that’s Aug 24, 2016 incredibly rewarding. PH: I’m really grateful to get to say that since BroadwayCon last year, the podcast has Review: Cabaret at the continued to grow—I mean that in a couple of ways: We’re constantly finding new Winnipesaukee Playhouse listeners, which is so great, but also I think we’ve become a bit more established in the Read More →

Broadway community, which means we have access to guests and shows that we didn’t Aug 24, 2016 before—people seem to know more about us now. Also, I think the quality of the show has gotten better. Mike and I are continuing to learn—we knew literally nothing about sound engineering and a lot of other technical aspects when we started—and to apply what we’re learning into our production quality.

CP: The list of guests are incredible, has it been easy to line up these artists?

http://www.onstageblog.com/columns/2016/7/14/how-a-podcast-created-the-must-attend-event-of-the-summer 3/6 8/25/2016 How a Podcast Created the Must-Attend Event of the Summer — OnStage PH: We have been incredibly lucky to have been able to book the guests that we have lined up for the summer series. Basically everyone we reached out to said Yes—even if they didn’t necessarily know what they were getting themselves into. Lesli Margherita and Laura Osnes have always been so supportive of our show—and their support has really helped us get “Yeses” from other artists. Lindsay Mendez is so so so busy and agreed to come down to NYC on her one day off from the show that she’s doing in Williamstown, so that was amazing. Eden Espinosa, I think, is one of the great musical theater singers of our time, so we couldn’t have been happier when her schedule opened up and she was able to do it. I don’t know, sometimes I look at our line up and just go , “How on EARTH did we manage this?”

CP: Tell me about the amount of work that goes into these concerts?

PH: Getting ready for the shows can sometime be like a hilarious comedy of errors. Because we do them at Pearl Studios, we have to bring EVERYTHING. We have this huge step and repeat (you know, that, like, huge banner thing that you put your logo on and then hope people will stand in front of to take pictures?), we have a huge sound system, we have boxes of concession items that we sell like T-shirts, CDs, food, etc. We make homemade Sangria, which, as you can imagine, is an absolute nightmare to transport. So we have to somehow get all that stuff there and then we only have an hour to set up before the doors open. So I’m always running around like crazy, Mike focuses on the technical stuff, my husband Steve handles Daisy, and our amazing stage manager Jenn Scott keeps us all calm. Somehow it all seems to work out and everyone has a blast. None of us are natural event producers, so we’re learning as we go.

CP: Any dream guests?

PH: YES! Off the top of my head, we’d love to do shows with Megan Hilty, Alex Brightman, Norm Lewis, Renee Elise Goldsberry (can you imagine?), Lin-Manuel, obviously. We’d also like to expand to having more than one guest per show. I joke with Lesli Margherita that I want to produce a concert called “Lesli and Friends” where she just drinks wine and sings songs with her friends in the business. Everyone loves Lesli, so we could book just about anybody for that. We’d also love to do cast reunion shows. I’d love to get a bunch of cast members from “In the Heights” to come do a show with us. So, yeah, we have a lot of big ideas.

CP: Will you be continuing these throughout the year as well?

We will probably take some time off from the live shows at that point. We have some VERY exciting announcements to make in the next couple of weeks and are planning for a very busy fall / winter season. We love doing the live shows and definitely plan to continue with them, just not necessarily as a set monthly gig. Also, we’re planning a 100th episode concert for January or February, so stay tuned for details on that too!

I highly recommend you attend these events. For $10, the amount of insight and interaction is beyond worth it. For info about the series and tickets, visit www.theaterppl.com/summer-series.
