When I first read this play, I thought it was so dead-on, that I was Cygnet Theatre Company convinced that it was written specifically about the restaurant in New York presents City that I worked at, Stephanie’s, on the Upper East Side. We waited on our loyal regulars, including the Three-Lemon Lady, who required three lemons, NOT two, in her iced tea at luncheon, while her chauffeur waited in the car, discreetly parked just out of view of the front window. Or Mr. Dewars and his “son” who wanted his Dewars and rocks waiting for him on his table before he was seated. Or the celebs that I had the “pleasure” to wait on, Bernadette Peters, Jennifer Beals, Bobby Short, and a truly memorable time waiting on Elia Kazan and Robert Lewis drunkenly arguing over who was the better Blanche Dubois: Vivien Leigh or Jessica Tandy (I kid you not) while screaming that their ashtray wasn’t emptied promptly enough! It was truly a wild time in my life that was as funny while I was going through it as it is by becky mode upon remembering the dull brunches and late dinners. For those who have never been “backstage” at a restaurant, don’t be fooled. This is as close to what really goes on as it gets! They are obedient children and responsible working adults. For many of these characters it becomes clear that there is a big gap between voiced facts about their lives and the unspoken truths about what they are. Rumors, gossip, letter writing and private prayer undermine this public face. During Daniel Arap Moi’s Presidency between 1978 and 2002, Kenyan children were taught in school that Moi was the generous Baba wa Taifa or father of the Nation who supplied them with free school milk. ALAN BENNETT Born on the 9th May 1934 in Leeds, Yorkshire, Bennett attended Leeds Modern school. In 1957 he graduated from Exeter College, Oxford with a first class degree in medieval history. He was a junior lecturer at Magdalen College, Oxford from 1960-62. His career has included acting, writing and directing across the stage, television, film and the radio, with a focus of exploring the lives of ordinary people. In his introduction to The History Boys, Bennett talks of how his own experiences influenced his writing the play. The school the boys attended was very much like his own school, although he was not to learn Irwin’s methods until his final exams at University. But it was the characters with which he began. In an interview for the National Theatre in 2005, he states that whilst the two characters of Irwin and Hector probably do say something about the contrasting methods of the education system, he simply wanted to put these two characters together a see what happened. When asked what he wanted audiences to take away with them in the same interview, Bennett answered: “I’d like the audience to come away wanting to spend more time in the company of the characters in the play.     J OHN F . A NDREWS OBE JOHN F. ANDREWS is an editor, educator, and cultural leader with wide experience as a writer, lecturer, consultant, and event producer. From 1974 to 1984 he enjoyed a decade as Director of Academic Programs at the FOLGER SHAKESPEARE LIBRARY. In that capacity he redesigned and augmented the scope and appeal of SHAKESPEARE QUARTERLY, supervised the Library’s book-publishing operation, and orchestrated a period of dynamic growth in the FOLGER INSTITUTE, a center for advanced studies in the Renaissance whose outreach he extended and whose consortium grew under his guidance from five co-sponsoring universities to twenty-two, with Duke, Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Penn, Penn State, Princeton, Rutgers, Virginia, and Yale among the additions.
