The vehicle was handed to Royal Mail, the UK’s postal service that already has more than 700 PACCAR bodied DAF vehicles in its fleet. Leyland Trucks is the one and only truck manufacturer that assembles and installs bodies on its truck production lines. It offers significant reductions in delivery lead times, supporting maximum efficiency and vehicle availability. One of them now has 100,000 kilometres on the clock already. “As a specialist in transporting parts for aviation industry, we spend a lot of time on the road”, he explains. “That means that we got a lot of experience very quickly with the new generation of Euro 6 vehicles”. Nirotrans has now purchased another three new XF Euro 6 trucks. “We have grown significantly in recent months”, says Vissenberg. “In total, we have purchased 20 new Euro 6 trucks, including those from other manufacturers. The DAF XF Euro 6 has clearly shown that it is the most economical of them all”. ■ 2,000TH DAF CF ASSEMBLED IN TAIWAN The 2,000th locally assembled DAF CF85 truck recently rolled off the production line at FASC – the Formosa Automobile Sales Corporation – in Taiwan. DAF has been active in Taiwan since 2006 and is the market leader amongst the European brands. FASC is responsible for the marketing and sales of DAF trucks in Taiwan, as well as local assembly. In addition to the CF, FASC has also been assembling two versions of the popular LF distribution truck since 2013. IN ACTION 02 2014 5 ■ HOYER TURKEY DRIVES DAF Hoyer Logistics is a company operating around the world that specialises in container transport of chemicals, liquids, liquid food products and oil. The Turkish branch recently put ten brand new DAF CF85.460s into operation. DAF was chosen partly because of previous good experiences. The low fuel consumption also played a major role, as did the relatively low weight of the CF itself. This is important because every kilogram counts when transporting liquids. ■ “COOL” DAF Ice hockey fans in the Frankfurt area will be happy with this; RICHTER.transporte from nearby Langenselbold is sending its first XF Euro 6 out on the road with a body bearing spectacular advertising for the Frankfurt Lions, the local ice hockey team. The idea came from director/owner Hans-Jörg Richter himself, a diehard fan. “A gift from a fan to the club”, says Richter, who has never missed a home game. And the reaction from fans on Facebook, where the truck has already received more than 600 “likes”, shows that the combination has been noticed. RICHTER.transporte has used DAF exclusively since it was established in 2006. “I tried out all the makes and stuck with DAF. The operating costs, the fuel consumption, it ticks all the boxes”, says Richter about it. “And my drivers love them”. According to Richter, the first XF Euro 6 from RICHTER.transporte uses around 10% less than its predecessor, the Euro 5 XF105. ■ DAF ROAD SHOW TWELVE COUNTRIES IN FOUR MONTHS Five DAFs, all of them Euro 6, recently went on “tour” to support local dealer shows and national shows in 13 Eastern European countries. In total, the caravan will spend nearly four months on the road, visiting dealers in Serbia, Bosnia, Slovenia, Croatia, Romania, Greece, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Belarus, Estonia and Latvia/Lithuania. Follow the route of the DAF Road Show at facebook.com/daftrucksnv IN ACTION 02 2014 6 APPLICATIONS ALWAYS THE RIGHT SOLUTION! It’s always a great moment when you’re handed the keys to a new truck. It’s the climax to a detailed process in which the customer, dealer and, often, the bodybuilder jointly come up with the best possible transport solution for the customer. Starting point for this decision process is the truck’s purpose – what does the customer expect from the truck and which product specification would be most suitable? With an extensive range of ultra-modern two, three and four-axle vehicles, DAF has a truck to suit every application. For distribution transport, construction, local authorities, the agricultural sector and heavy transport over long distances; because every customer is unique and so is every DAF. INTENSIVE DISTRIBUTION: DAF IS THE IDEAL BASE The DAF LF with GVWs of 7.5 to 19 tonnes and the DAF CF required reserve to prevent overloading. This is important if for total weights of 18 to 50 tonnes and above are the ideal trips are frequently made with partial loads. partners for intensive distribution transport. DAF knows what transport operators in this category want: a low empty weight Of course the LF and CF distribution vehicles also offer for a high gross load capacity and, most importantly, ease of optimum manoeuvrability; the front wheels have a steering use.

  • The Stagflation Crisis and the European Automotive Industry, 1973-85
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Diposit Digital de la Universitat de Barcelona The stagflation crisis and the European automotive industry, 1973-85 Jordi Catalan (Universitat de Barcelona) The dissemination of Fordist techniques in Western Europe during the golden age of capitalism led to terrific rates of auto production growth and massive motorization. However, since the late 1960s this process showed signs of exhaustion because demand from the lowest segments began to stagnate. Moreover, during the seventies, the intensification of labour conflicts, the multiplication of oil prices and the strengthened competitiveness of Japanese rivals in the world market significantly squeezed profits of European car assemblers. Key companies from the main producer countries, such as British Leyland, FIAT, Renault and SEAT, recorded huge losses and were forced to restructure. The degree of success in coping with the stagflation crisis depended on two groups of factors. On the one hand, successful survival depended on strategies followed by the firms to promote economies of scale and scope, process and product innovation, related diversification, internationalization and, sometimes, changes of ownership. On the other hand, firms benefited from long-term path-dependent growth in their countries of origin’s industrial systems. Indeed, two of the main winners of the period, Toyota and Volkswagen, can rightly be seen as outstanding examples of Confucian and Rhine capitalism. Both types of coordinated capitalism contributed to the success of their main car assemblers during the stagflation slump. However, since then, global convergence with Anglo-Saxon capitalism may have eroded some of the institutional bases of their strength.

  • Evidence from the European Automotive Industry
Network position, export patterns and competitiveness: evidence from the European automotive industry (Published on Competition and Change, vol 21(2): 132-158) Manuel Gracia [email protected] Mª José Paz [email protected] Abstract The organizational characteristics of production in the European automotive industry have favoured a high degree of fragmentation and productive mobility. This article analyses the differing national positions of automotive producing countries and their export patterns – particularly their export reorientation to extra-European Union (EU) markets following the collapse of regional demand in the European automotive industry. Based on the methodologies of Mahutga and Piana our position analysis arrives at two main conclusions: i) the countries best positioned in the European regional automotive production network are precisely those that have experienced a greater increase in extra- EU exports, thus reducing their dependence on regional European demand; ii) the increase in extra-EU exports (mainly of final goods) is linked to increased regional fragmentation of production in the automotive industry. We conclude that the governance of this fragmentation process is a key determinant of extra-EU export competitiveness. Keywords: production network; automotive industry; export pattern; Europe; internationalization of production JEL: L62, F15 1 Introduction Various studies have analysed the automotive industry and its high production fragmentation which is organized around increasingly globalized regional production areas such as the European Union (Dicken, 2003; Domanski and Lung, 2009; Frigant, and Layan, 2009; Jürgens and Krzywdzinsky, 2009; Frigant and Zumpe, 2014). Following this production fragmentation process the underlying global production network governance structures of leading companies in the industry (which determine what, where, and how goods will be produced) have created differentiated national producer country positions within these networks (Gereffi and Korzeniewics, 1994; Hess, 2008, Gibbon et al.
