Tehran Taxi (Iran 2015) DIRECTOR : Jafar Panahi RUNNING TIME : 82mins RATING : Documentary Synopsis: Banned Iranain director Jafar Panahi takes to the streets of Tehran in a taxi with his camera secreted on the cab’s dashboard. Winner of the Golden Bear Berlin Film Festival 2015 Review:Jonathan Romney Much loose talk is bandied around in the film world about directors’ bravery and the heroism of “guerrilla” film-making – but those terms genuinely mean something when applied to Iran’s Jafar Panahi. After making several robust realist dramas about the challenges of everyday life in his country – among them The Circle, Crimson Gold and the exuberantly angry football movie Offside – Panahi fell foul of the Iranian government, which threatened him with imprisonment, prevented him from travelling and banned him from making films for 20 years. He has protested by working under the wire to make three extraordinary works, contraband statements that are at once a cri de coeur from internal exile, and a bring-it-on raised fist of defiance. This Is Not a Film (2011, directed with Mojtaba Mirtahmasb) showed Panahi cooling his heels under house arrest in his Tehran flat, and evoking the film that he would have made had he been allowed to pick up a camera. He wasn’t technically making an actual film, Panahi argued – yet he was manifestly making one anyway, as the world saw when the result was smuggled to Cannes on a USB stick hidden in a cake. However, the less successful Closed Curtain (2013, directed with Kambuzia Partovi) was a claustrophobically self-referential chamber piece, and suggested that Panahi’s plight was getting the better of him.

  • An Analysis of Iranian War Film Genres )1980 2013( with Niklas Luhmann’S Social Systems Theory
Genre Shift and Identity Maintenance – An Analysis of Iranian War Film Genres (1980_2013) with Niklas Luhmann’s Social Systems Theory Golnaz Sarkar Farshi* Received: 2018/01/15 Accepted: 2018/08/11 Abstract A close observation of Iran-Iraq war films in the Iranian society reveals that their genres have shifted in the course of the society’s evolution. This questions the category-based principles of genre we have known so far in literature concerning film theory and necessitates a new conceptualization of genre, which can be realized with the aid of Niklas Luhmann’s social systems theory. This theory abandons categorization in favor of functional differentiation and helps us observe Iranian war movies in their societal context. By taking a close look at the function of film in the society as one of the mass media, and through locating the concepts of memory, reality, identity and genre in Luhmann’s theory, I shall find a pattern in the mentioned genre shift which is in turn punctuated by the Iranian society’s different stages of evolution. To do so, I shall rely on a qualitative, analytical and critical method. Keywords: film genre, identity, Iran-Iraq war, Niklas Luhmann, social systems theory, war film *. No. 16 The House Of Cinema Newsletter Iranian Alliance of Motion Picture Guilds April 2011 Survey of Significant Cinematic Events in Iran in 1389 REPORT Images of Cinema in the Iranian Calendar Year 1389 (March 21, 2010 – March 20, 2011) Although cinema presents images of social realities and events and sometimes acts as a pictorial almanac, it also participates actively in the course of events. The Iranian cinema experienced a lot of ups and downs and faced difficulties as in the past years. Naturally this survey can not incorporate all of those events and only a number of typical and most controversial happenings will be included here. To get a better view of the events we could divide them in three groups: screening and production, organizational and cinematic relationships and festivals. In the end of course we will have cinematic programs, departed film artists and the last Seyed Mohsen program at the House of Cinema in the past year. 2 Jafar Panahi’s Forbidden Tetralogy This Is Not a Film, Closed Curtain, Taxi Tehran, Three Faces Abstract Chapter 2 brings a reflection on Jafar Panahi’s forbidden tetralogy, This Is Not a Film (co-directed by Mojtaba Mirtahmasb, 2011), Closed Curtain (Pardeh, co-directed by Kambuzia Partovi, 2013), Taxi Tehran (Taxi, 2015) and Three Faces (Se rokh, 2018), all of which have come into being despite (or as a result of) the 20-year ban from making films imposed on him by the Iranian authorities. Forcibly shot in enclosed spaces, these films are marked by a relentless scrutiny of their restrained locations and of the director himself, turned into reluctant protagonist of his non-films. In such restrictive circumstances, Panahi’s irrepressible creative vein is channelled towards bringing to the fore, with radical realism, film’s inherent conundrum between its recording and artistic properties. Keywords: Non-cinema; Jafar Panahi; This Is Not a Film; Closed Curtain; Taxi Tehran; Three Faces This chapter will address cinema’s constitutive dilemma between presenta- tion and representation of reality by means of a reflection on Jafar Panahi’s forbidden tetralogy, This Is Not a Film (In film nist, co-directed by Mojtaba Mirtahmasb, 2011), Closed Curtain (Pardeh, co-directed by Kambuzia Partovi, 2013), Taxi Tehran (Taxi, 2015) and Three Faces (Se rokh, 2018), all of which have come into being despite (or rather as a result of) the ban from making films imposed on him by the Iranian authorities. Though the documentary genre has never featured prominently in Panahi’s portfolio, throughout his career he has applied himself to an unrelenting realist programme that eventually cost him his freedom of movement and his own ability to make films, despite the international acclaim bestowed on his oeuvre.

Iranian digital film-making, which has emerged and developed since 2000 in the Iranian cinematic context, mainly follows a trend based on the nature of new media. However, this trend is subject to fluctuation because of specific aspects of Iranian cinema. In addition, due to the realistic cinematic culture of Iran and the presence of Iranian neorealism film-makers, we face the emergence of a new kind of film-making which has certain international effects in world cinema.

In close intratextual connection with earlier pieces of Jafar Panahi’s oeuvre, pre-eminently The Mirror (Ayneh, 1997) and Offside (2006), his recent films made in illegality, includingThis Is Not a Film (In film nist, Jafar Panahi and Mojtaba Mirtahmasb, 2011), Closed Curtain (Pardeh, Jafar Panahi and Kambuzia Partovi, 2013) and Taxi Tehran (Jafar Panahi, 2015), reformulate the relationship between cinema and the “real,” defying the limitations of filmmaking in astounding ways. The paper addresses the issue of non- cinema, pertaining to those instances of cinematic “impurity” in which “the medium disregards its own limits in order to politically interfere with the other arts and life itself” (Nagib 2016, 132). Panahi’s overtly confrontational (non-)cinematic discourse is an eminent example of “accented cinema” (Naficy 2001). His artisanal and secret use of the camera in deterritorialized conditions and extreme limitations as regards profilmic space – house arrest, fake taxi interior – gives way for multilayered reflexivity, incorporating non- actorial presence, performative self-filming and theatricality as subversive gestures, with a special emphasis on the off-screen and remediated video- orality performed in front of, or directly addressed to the camera. The paper explores the ways in which the filmmaker’s tactics become powerful gestures of “politicized immediacy” (Naficy 2001, 6) that call for the (inter)medial as an also indispensably political act (Schröter 2010).1 Keywords: Jafar Panahi’s films, non-cinema, reflexivity, intermediality, orality.
