Foundations of Newtonian Dynamics: 1 An Axiomatic Approach for the Thinking Student C. J. Papachristou 2 Department of Physical Sciences, Hellenic Naval Academy, Piraeus 18539, Greece Abstract. Despite its apparent simplicity, Newtonian mechanics contains conceptual subtleties that may cause some confusion to the deep-thinking student. These subtle- ties concern fundamental issues such as, e.g., the number of independent laws needed to formulate the theory, or, the distinction between genuine physical laws and deriva- tive theorems. This article attempts to clarify these issues for the benefit of the stu- dent by revisiting the foundations of Newtonian dynamics and by proposing a rigor- ous axiomatic approach to the subject. This theoretical scheme is built upon two fun- damental postulates, namely, conservation of momentum and superposition property for interactions. Newton’s laws, as well as all familiar theorems of mechanics, are shown to follow from these basic principles. 1. Introduction Teaching introductory mechanics can be a major challenge, especially in a class of students that are not willing to take anything for granted! To sign up for the real thing or for curriculum details about the lesson go to www.cosmoslessons.com Introduction: Measuring Gravity Over 300 years ago the famous English physicist, Sir Isaac Newton, had the incredible insight that gravity, which we’re so familiar with on Earth, is the same force that holds the solar system together. Suddenly the orbits of the planets made sense, but a mystery still remained. To calculate the gravitational attraction between two objects Newton needed to know the overall strength of gravity. This is set by the universal gravitational constant “G” – commonly known as “big G” – and Newton wasn't able to calculate it. Part of the problem is that gravity is very weak – compare the electric force, which is 1040 times stronger. That’s a bigger di혯erence than between the size of an atom and the whole universe! Newton's work began a story to discover the value of G that continues to the present day. For around a century little progress was made. Then British scientist Henry Cavendish got a measurement from an experiment using 160 kg lead balls. It was astoundingly accurate. Since then scientists have continued in their attempts to measure G. Even today, despite all of our technological advances (we live in an age where we can manipulate individual electrons and measure things that take trillionths of a second), di혯erent experiments produce signicantly di혯erent results. -

Systematics Vol. 11 No. 3 Although recent work has begun to clarify the later history and development of the vis viva controversy, the origins of the conflict arc still obscure.1 This is understandable, since it was Leibniz who fired the initial barrage of the battle; and, as always, it is extremely difficult to disentangle the various elements of the great physicist-philosopher’s thought. His conception includes facets of physics, mathematics and, of course, metaphysics. However, one feature is essential to any possible understanding of the genesis of the debate over vis viva: we must note, as did Leibniz, that the vis viva notion was to emerge as the first element of a new science, which differed significantly from that of Descartes and Newton, and which Leibniz called the science of dynamics. In what follows, I attempt to clarify the various strands which were woven into the vis viva concept, noting especially the conceptual framework which emerged and later evolved into the science of dynamics as we know it today. I shall argue, in general, that Leibniz’ science of dynamics developed as a consistent physical interpretation of certain of his metaphysical and mathematical beliefs. Thus the following analysis indicates that at least once in the history of science, an important development in physical conceptualization was intimately dependent upon developments in metaphysical conceptualization. 1. -

Geometry, classical mechanics and classical thermodynamics are three relatively old disciplines. Their research methods and perspectives for the same phenomenon are quite different. However, there must be some undetermined connections and symmetries among them. In previous studies, there is a lack of horizontal analogical research on the basic theories of different disciplines, but revealing the deep connections between them will help to deepen the understanding of the existing system and promote the common development of multiple disciplines. Using the method of analogy analysis, five basic axioms of geometry, four laws of classical mechanics and four laws of thermodynamics are compared and analyzed. The similarity and relevance of basic laws between different disciplines is proposed. Then, by comparing the axiom of circle in geometry and Newton’s law of universal gravitation, the conjecture of the law of thermo-gravitation is put forward. CAVENDISH WEIGHS THE EARTH Newton's law of gravitation tells us that any two bodies attract each other{not just the Earth and an apple, or the Earth and the Moon, but also two apples! We don't feel the attraction between two apples if we hold one in each hand, as we do the attraction of two magnets, but according to Newton's law, the two apples should attract each other. If that is really true, it might perhaps be possible to directly observe the force of attraction between two objects in a laboratory. The \great moment" when that was done came on August 5, 1797, in a garden shed in suburban London. The experimenter was Lord Henry Cavendish. Cavendish had inherited a fortune, and was therefore free to follow his inclinations, which turned out to be scientific. In addition to the famous experiment described here, he was also the discoverer of “inflammable air", now known as hydrogen. In those days, science in England was often pursued by private citizens of means, who communicated through the Royal Society. Although Cavendish studied at Cambridge for three years, the universities were not yet centers of scientific research. Let us turn now to a calculation. How much should the force of gravity between two apples actually amount to? Since the attraction between two objects is proportional to the product of their masses, the attraction between the apples should be the weight of an apple times the ratio of the mass of an apple to the mass of the Earth. The weight of an apple is, according to Newton, the force of attraction between the apple and the Earth: GMm W = R2 where G is the \gravitational constant", M the mass of the Earth, m the mass of an apple, and R the radius of the Earth. -

The Newton-Leibniz controversy over the invention of the calculus S.Subramanya Sastry 1 Introduction Perhaps one the most infamous controversies in the history of science is the one between Newton and Leibniz over the invention of the infinitesimal calculus. During the 17th century, debates between philosophers over priority issues were dime-a-dozen. Inspite of the fact that priority disputes between scientists were ¡ common, many contemporaries of Newton and Leibniz found the quarrel between these two shocking. Probably, what set this particular case apart from the rest was the stature of the men involved, the significance of the work that was in contention, the length of time through which the controversy extended, and the sheer intensity of the dispute. Newton and Leibniz were at war in the later parts of their lives over a number of issues. Though the dispute was sparked off by the issue of priority over the invention of the calculus, the matter was made worse by the fact that they did not see eye to eye on the matter of the natural philosophy of the world. Newton’s action-at-a-distance theory of gravitation was viewed as a reversion to the times of occultism by Leibniz and many other mechanical philosophers of this era. This intermingling of philosophical issues with the priority issues over the invention of the calculus worsened the nature of the dispute. One of the reasons why the dispute assumed such alarming proportions and why both Newton and Leibniz were anxious to be considered the inventors of the calculus was because of the prevailing 17th century conventions about priority and attitude towards plagiarism. -

NEWTON’S FIRST LAW OF MOTION The law of INERTIA INERTIA - describes how much an object tries to resist a change in motion (resist a force) inertia increases with mass INERTIA EXAMPLES Ex- takes more force to stop a bowling ball than a basket ball going the same speed (bowling ball tries more to keep going at a constant speed- resists stopping) Ex- it takes more force to lift a full backpack than an empty one (full backpack tries to stay still more- resists moving ; it has more inertia) What the law of inertia says…. AKA Newton’s First Law of Motion An object at rest, stays at rest Because the net force is zero! Forces are balanced (equal & opposite) …an object in motion, stays in motion Motion means going at a constant speed & in a straight line The net force is zero on this object too! NO ACCELERATION! …unless acted upon by a net force. Only when this happens will you get acceleration! (speed or direction changes) Forces are unbalanced now- not all equal and opposite there is a net force> 0N! You have overcome the object’s inertia! Gravity and Coulomb's
Gravity operates by the inverse square law (source Hyperphysics) A main objective in this lesson is that you understand the basic notion of “inverse square” relationships. There are a small number (perhaps less than 25) general paradigms of nature that if you make them part of your basic view of nature they will help you greatly in your understanding of how nature operates. Gravity is the weakest of the four fundamental forces, yet it is the dominant force in the universe for shaping the large-scale structure of galaxies, stars, etc. The gravitational force between two masses m1 and m2 is given by the relationship: This is often called the "universal law of gravitation" and G the universal gravitation constant. It is an example of an inverse square law force. The force is always attractive and acts along the line joining the centers of mass of the two masses. The forces on the two masses are equal in size but opposite in direction, obeying Newton's third law. You should notice that the universal gravitational constant is REALLY small so gravity is considered a very weak force. The gravity force has the same form as Coulomb's law for the forces between electric charges, i.e., it is an inverse square law force which depends upon the product of the two interacting sources. This led Einstein to start with the electromagnetic force and gravity as the first attempt to demonstrate the unification of the fundamental forces. It turns out that this was the wrong place to start, and that gravity will be the last of the forces to unify with the other three forces.
