Conservative Forces and Potential Energy
Program 7 / Chapter 7 Conservative forces and potential energy In the motion of a mass acted on by a conservative force the total energy in the system, which is the sum of the kinetic and potential energies, is conserved. In this section, this motion is computed numerically using the Euler–Cromer method. Theory In section 7–2 of your textbook the oscillatory motion of a mass attached to a spring is described in the context of energy conservation. Specifically, if the spring is initially compressed then the system has spring potential energy. When the mass is free to move, this potential energy is converted into kinetic energy, K = 1/2mv2. The spring then stretches past its equilibrium position, the potential energy increases again until it equals its initial value. This oscillatory motion is illustrated in Fig. 7–7 of your textbook. POTENTIAL ENERGY Often the work done on a system of two or more objects does not change the kinetic energy of the system but instead it is stored as a new type of energy called POTENTIAL ENERGY. 32ND INTERNATIONAL COSMIC RAY CONFERENCE,BEIJING 2011 Overview of the CALET Mission to the ISS SHOJI TORII1,2 FOR THE CALET COLLABORATION 1Research Institute for Scinece and Engineering, Waseda University 2Space Environment Utilization Center, JAXA [email protected] DOI: 10.7529/ICRC2011/V06/0615 Abstract: The CALorimetric Electron Telescope (CALET) mission is being developed as a standard payload for the Exposure Facility of the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM/EF) on the International Space Station (ISS). The instrument consists of a segmented plastic scintillator charge measuring module, an imaging calorimeter consisting of 8 scintillating fiber planes with a total of 3 radiation lengths of tungsten plates interleaved with the fiber planes, and a total absorption calorimeter consisting of crossed PWO logs with a total depth of 27 radiation lengths. The major scientific objectives for CALET are to search for nearby cosmic ray sources and dark matter by carrying out a precise measurement of the electron spectrum (1 GeV - 20 TeV) and observing gamma rays (10 GeV - 10 TeV). CALET has a unique capability to observe electrons and gamma rays in the TeV region since the hadron rejection power is larger than 105 and the energy resolution better than 2 % above 100 GeV. CALET has also the capability to measure cosmic ray H, He and heavy nuclei up to 1000 TeV.∼ The instrument will also monitor solar activity and search for gamma ray transients. The phase B study has started, aimed at a launch in 2013 by H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV) for a 5 year observation period on JEM/EF. -

The sameness between the inertial mass and the grav- itational mass is an assumption and not a consequence of the equiv- alent principle is shown. In the context of the Sciama's inertia theory, the sameness between the inertial mass and the gravita- tional mass is discussed and a certain condition which must be experimentally satis¯ed is given. The inertial force proposed by Sciama, in a simple case, is derived from the Assis' inertia the- ory based in the introduction of a Weber type force. The origin of the inertial force is totally justi¯ed taking into account that the Weber force is, in fact, an approximation of a simple retarded potential, see [18, 19]. The way how the inertial forces are also derived from some solutions of the general relativistic equations is presented. We wonder if the theory of inertia of Assis is included in the framework of the General Relativity. In the context of the inertia developed in the present paper we establish the relation between the constant acceleration a0, that appears in the classical Modi¯ed Newtonian Dynamics (M0ND) theory, with the Hubble constant H0, i.e. a0 ¼ cH0. 1. Inertial mass and gravitational mass The gravitational mass mg is the responsible of the gravitational force. Phoronomy: space, construction, and mathematizing motion Marius Stan With his chapter, Phoronomy, Kant defies even the seasoned interpreter of his philosophy of physics.1 Exegetes have given it little attention, and un- derstandably so: his aims are opaque, his turns in argument little motivated, and his context mysterious, which makes his project there look alienating. I seek to illuminate here some of the darker corners in that chapter. Specifi- cally, I aim to clarify three notions in it: his concepts of velocity, of compo- site motion, and of the construction required to compose motions. I defend three theses about Kant. 1) his choice of velocity concept is ul- timately insufficient. 2) he sided with the rationalist faction in the early- modern debate on directed quantities. 3) it remains an open question if his algebra of motion is a priori, though he believed it was. I begin in § 1 by explaining Kant’s notion of phoronomy and its argu- ment structure in his chapter. In § 2, I present four pictures of velocity cur- rent in Kant’s century, and I assess the one he chose. My § 3 is in three parts: a historical account of why algebra of motion became a topic of early modern debate; a synopsis of the two sides that emerged then; and a brief account of his contribution to the debate. Finally, § 4 assesses how general his account of composite motion is, and if it counts as a priori knowledge. -

The Newton-Leibniz controversy over the invention of the calculus S.Subramanya Sastry 1 Introduction Perhaps one the most infamous controversies in the history of science is the one between Newton and Leibniz over the invention of the infinitesimal calculus. During the 17th century, debates between philosophers over priority issues were dime-a-dozen. Inspite of the fact that priority disputes between scientists were ¡ common, many contemporaries of Newton and Leibniz found the quarrel between these two shocking. Probably, what set this particular case apart from the rest was the stature of the men involved, the significance of the work that was in contention, the length of time through which the controversy extended, and the sheer intensity of the dispute. Newton and Leibniz were at war in the later parts of their lives over a number of issues. Though the dispute was sparked off by the issue of priority over the invention of the calculus, the matter was made worse by the fact that they did not see eye to eye on the matter of the natural philosophy of the world. Newton’s action-at-a-distance theory of gravitation was viewed as a reversion to the times of occultism by Leibniz and many other mechanical philosophers of this era. This intermingling of philosophical issues with the priority issues over the invention of the calculus worsened the nature of the dispute. One of the reasons why the dispute assumed such alarming proportions and why both Newton and Leibniz were anxious to be considered the inventors of the calculus was because of the prevailing 17th century conventions about priority and attitude towards plagiarism. -
