Gardner The current Auckland City Council Proposed District Scheme lists two Picconia excelsa trees in Remuera at St Kentigern School and at 115 Victoria Avenue that are to be protected for their botanical (rarity) value. This species the Canary Islands olive is not mentioned in most horticultural works. It forms a tree of medium size heavy in foliage with the rough bark and crooked branching typical of its family. Sterile specimens have a deceptive likeness to those of Nestegis spp. even having a waxy bloom on the petioles — (like N. cunninghamii but not N. apetala) (Johnson 1957). The older AK material was first determined by Dr Peter Green of Kew. There are several other individuals in Auckland like the above of good size but almost certainly less than a hundred years old. There are trees at 2 Woodside Ave Mt Eden at 277 Mt Eden Rd and on a farmhouse drive in Ihumatao Rd; there is a AK specimen from the Wilson Home in Takapuna and until recently there was a tree in the crater of Mt St John. Perhaps the importation of Picconia might be the result of a nurserymans recognizing that Canary Islands species should flourish in what is literally the opposite side of the world. -

The plant genus Strelitzia occurs naturally in the eastern parts of southern Africa. It comprises three arborescent species, known as wild bananas, and two acaulescent species, known as crane flowers or bird-of-paradise flowers. The logo of the South African National Biodiversity Institute is based on the striking inflorescence of Strelitzia reginae, a native of the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal that has become a garden favourite worldwide. It sym- bolises the commitment of the Institute to champion the exploration, conservation, sustain- able use, appreciation and enjoyment of South Africa’s exceptionally rich biodiversity for all people. ‘A Man of Courage and Activity’: Thomas Tew and Pirate Settlements of the Indo - Atlantic Trade World, 1645 -1730 1 Kevin McDonald Department of History University of California, Santa Cruz “The sea is everything it is said to be: it provides unity, transport , the means of exchange and intercourse, if man is prepared to make an effort and pay a price.” – Fernand Braudel In the summer of 1694, Thomas Tew, an infamous Anglo -American pirate, was observed riding comfortably in the open coach of New York’s only six -horse carriage with Benjamin Fletcher, the colonel -governor of the colony. 2 Throughout the far -flung English empire, especially during the seventeenth century, associations between colonial administrators and pirates were de rig ueur, and in this regard , New York was similar to many of her sister colonies. In the developing Atlantic world, pirates were often commissioned as privateers and functioned both as a first line of defense against seaborne attack from imperial foes and as essential economic contributors in the oft -depressed colonies. In the latter half of the seventeenth century, moreover, colonial pirates and privateers became important transcultural brokers in the Indian Ocean region, spanning the globe to form an Indo-Atlantic trade network be tween North America and Madagascar. Prebble , and William M. M. Eddie Abstract The Campanulaceae: Wahlenbergioideae currently comprises 15 genera, one of which, Wahlenbergia, is widespread over the southern continents. Southern Africa is the region with maximum wahlenbergioid diversity with 12 genera and approximately 252 species. A second center is Australasia with 38 Wahlenbergia species. This study used a broad sample of wahlenbergioid diversity from South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand to reconstruct a phylogeny based on chloroplast trnL-F and nuclear ITS sequences. Data were analyzed separately and in combination using parsimony and Bayesian methods. The results suggest that for the wahlenbergioids to be monophyletic Wahlenbergia hederacea has to be excluded and that none of the South African, Australian or New Zealand lineages are strictly monophyletic. There are five species assemblages that are in some disagreement with current classification in the family. Wahlenbergia, Prismatocarpus and Roella are shown to be non-monophyletic and implications for a reclassification are presented. Careful consideration of morphological characters is suggested before the adjustment of generic circumscriptions can be accomplished. While there are suggestions that commercial fisheries (e.g. black-scabbard fish fishery) also produce unreported catches, we were not able to estimate these at this point. Total estimated fisheries catches taken by Madeira from the Madeiran EEZ were around 460,000 tonnes for the 1950-2010 period, increasing from around 2,300 t in 1950 to a peak of 15,000 t in 1995, before declining to around 5,400 t by 2010. -

On the basis of anatomical criteria the floral cup of Lauraceae can be regarded as appendicular, as the traces entering into the floral cup are morphologi- cally compound, differentiated into tepal and stamen traces at higher levels. The ontogenetic studies also support this contention. The term Perigynous hypanthium is retained for the floral cup of Lauraceae as it is formed as a result of intercalary growth occurring underneath the region of perianth and androecium. Keywords. Introduction The family Lauraceae has received comparatively little attention from earlier workers because of difficulty in procuring the material. So far very little work has been done on the floral anatomy of this family (Reece 1939 ; Sastri 1952 ; Pal 1974). There has been considerable difference of opinion regarding the nature of floral cup in angiosperms. The present work was initiated to study the morphological nature of the floral cup. 2. Materials and methods The present investigation embodies the results of observations on 21 species of the Lauraceae. Schroeder Department of Biology, University of California, Los Angeles The Canary Islands, located about 800 miles southwest of the Strait of Gibraltar, are operated under the government of Spain. There are five islands which extend from 15 °W to 18 °W longitude and between 29° and 28° North latitude. The climate is Mediterranean. The two eastern islands, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, are affected by the Sahara Desert of the mainland; hence they are relatively barren and very arid. The northeast trade winds bring moisture from the sea to the western islands of Hierro, Gomera, La Palma, Tenerife, and Gran Canaria. The southern ends of these islands are in rain shadows, hence are dry, while the northern parts support a more luxuriant vegetation. The Canary Islands were prominent in the explorations of Christopher Columbus, who stopped at Gomera to outfit and supply his fleet prior to sailing "off the map" to the New World in 1492. Return voyages by Columbus and other early explorers were via the Canary Islands, hence many plants from the New World were first established at these points in the Old World. It is suspected that possibly some of the oldest potato germplasm still exists in these islands. Man exploited the islands by growing sugar cane, and later Mesembryanthemum crystallinum for the extraction of soda, cochineal cactus, tomatoes, potatoes, and finally bananas. The banana industry is slowly giving way to floral crops such as strelitzia, carnations, chrysanthemums, and several new exotic fruits such as avocado, mango, papaya, and carambola. -
