Plant Heritage is a world leading garden plant conservation and research charity. Their mission is conservation of cultivated plants in the British Isles.

Azara lancelata Introduction

We are a small plant nursery in North Herefordshire specialising in growing and supplying plants from the Southern Hemisphere mainly and .

The plants grown at the nursery are suitable for our geograhical location, we are here to promote and reintroduce some unusual and rarely grown and to help demonstrate their individual form and growth characteristics with a small arboretum open for visits.

To order a plant please contact us via email or phone. Plants are available for collection (North Herefordshire) or we can pack and post at cost, we usually send via Parcel Force.

The Arboretum

Individuals and / or small groups are invited to book a guided tour around the arboretum allowing an opportunity to ask questions about individual species. The tour will give a brief explanation of their horticultural and historical background, touching on the plant explorers involved and how they were brought into cultivation. A

Iconic medium to large up to Ht.20m. (Monkey Puzzle). Araucaria araucana Initially slow growing, an upright tree producing regular tiers of branches with rigid spine tipped, glossy green . An 1L £10 endangered native of the Chilean and Argentinian Andes. Hardy and wind firm, grows best in moist, well drained soil.

Alstroemeria lutea A hardy perennial from northern Chile. Flower stems up to 80cm carry loose clusters of yellow spotted or P9 £ streaked with red in summer. Flowers are good for cutting. (not available at present) Needs a well-drained soil in sun or light shade.

A large, dense evergreen , native of Chile. Dark green leaves with reddish stalks are conspicuously copper-coloured when young. Fragrant white flowers in May followed by 2L £12.50 that start red and ripen to black. Plant in a sheltered position in a moist, well-drained soil in partial shade. Hardy to-10C.

An interesting evergreen shrub from the Valdivian rainforest of Chile and adjacent Argentina, up to 3m x 3m. Lustrous green Aristotelia chilensis leaves up to 13cm long with reddish petioles on reddened stems. Small black in autumn. Best in mild areas or well 2L £10.00 sheltered sites, in full sun or light shade in moist, well-drained soil.

Astelia nervosa ‘Red Devil’ A hardy clump-forming perennial with upright sword-like metalic-red leaves to 60cm. Plant in a moist, well-drained soil 1-2L £7.50 in sun or partial shade. A good container plant for the patio.

A slow growing, small columnar tree Ht. 12 - 15m. A beautiful Austrocedrus chilensis species with foliage carried on frondose sprays. Native of Chile (not available at present) and Argentina found throughout the transition zone between the temperate rain forests and the Patagonian steppe.

A medium-sized evergreen shrub of 3m x 3m, native of Chile, for mild or sheltered gardens. The rigid leaves are matt- Azara dentata green above and grey-felted beneath. The fragrant yellow flowers are borne in late spring and early summer. Plant in 2L £12.50 a moist, well-drained soil in sun or partial shade in a warm, sheltered position or against a wall. Hardy to -5 - -7 C. A good conservatory plant.

Clusters of fragrant chrome- yellow flowers in late winter and early spring followed by white (not available at present) berries. Plant in a sheltered position in a moist, well-drained soil in sun or partial shade. Can be trained on a wall in colder areas. Hardy to -10C

A medium - sized or large shrub of 4m x 3m, native to Chile and Argentina, with narrow, bright green foliage. Small vanilla- scented, mustard-yellow flowers borne in profusion in April and 2L £12.50 May. Grow in a moist, well-drained soil in sun or partial shade. Shelter from cold winter winds or grow as a well-shrub.

The hardiest species of Azara. Native of Chile and the borderlands of Argentina. An elegant, evergreen small tree or large shrub uptp Ht. 6m. Clothen with sprays of very dark green small leaves. Clusters of deep yellow, vanilla scented flowers 2L £12.50 appear in spring. Requires a sheltered site in full sun or partial shade. Plant in any moist, well drained soil. Makes a good wall shrub.

A variegated form of the hardiest species of Azara. An elegant Azara microphylla ‘Albovariegata’ evergreen shrub to 5m. The sprays of small dark green leaves are broadly edged white. Clusters of deep-yellow vanilla- 2L £12.50 scented flowers in spring. Plant in a sheltered position ina moist, well-drained soil in sun or partial shade. Makes a good wall-trained shrub.

A variegated form of the hardiest species of Azara. An elegant Azara microphylla ‘Gilt Edge’ evergreen shrub to 5m. The sprays of small dark green leaves are broadly edged creamy-white with a pink tinge. Clusters 2L £12.50 of deep-yellow vanilla-scented flowers in spring. A rare species of Azara found in Chile. An evergreen shrub Azara patagonica Ht. 2.5 m x S 2.5m with glossy, tooth edged leaves, clusters of fragrant yellow flowers appear in late spring and summer. 3L £12.50 Needs a sheltered site in full sun or light shade. Any well drained moist soil. A good wall shrub or conservatory plant.

An evergreen shrub to 2.5m from central Chile. (Hardy -7 Azara petiolaris to -10°C). Extremely fragrant small yellow flowers in spring. Leathery dark-green leaves with sharply pointed teeth with 3L £12.50 reddish petioles. Needs a sheltered site in sun or light shade and moist, well drained soil. Good as a wall shrub.

Endemic to Chile. An evergreen shrub with shiny oval serrate leaves Ht. 2.5m x 2.5m. Dense spherical clusters of very fragrant yellow flowers appear over summer and autumn. Requires a 3L £12.50 sheltered site in full sun or light shade. Any well drained moist soil. A good wall shrub.

An evergreen shrub from central Chile. Elliptic to ovate lance- Berberis chilensis olate leaves 5cm long x 2.5cm wide with up to 5 spine- tipped teeth. Thorns up to 5cm singularly or in 3’s. Racemes of lem- 2L £7.50 on-yellow flowers are followed by spherical matt-blue fruits. Plant in a sheltered, sunny position in a moist, well drained soil. Protect from cold, drying winds. Hardy to -5 to -8C

A medium-sized evergreen shrub of 2m x 2m, native of Chile Berberis darwinii and Patagonia with dark glossy-green, toothed leaves. Drooping clusters of bright orange, tinted red flowers in spring 2L £ and early summer are followed by clusters of blue berries. (not available at present) Grow in any reasonable soil in sun or partial shade. Discovered by Charles Darwin and introduced by .

Evergreen shrub of 1m x 1m of compact, dense, bushy habit. Berberis darwinii ‘Compacta’ 3-pointed dark shiny green leaves, drooping clusters of bright orange, red-tipped flowers through spring followed by blue- 5L £9.50 black berries. Plant in any reasonable soil in sun or partial shade.

A dwarf semi-evergreen shrub of 0.4 x 1m, native of Chile and Berberis empetrifolia Argentina. Slender, arching stems bearing narrow leaves with rolled edges. Small golden yellow flowers in May followed by 2L £7.50 blue-black berries. Well suited to the rock or scree garden. Needs a well drained lime-free soil in sun or light shade.

A medium-sized evergreen shrub endemic to the Patagonian regions of Argentina and Chile. Small dark-green spiny-tipped leaves. 2L £7.50 Flowers deep orange-yellow in April and May are followed by purple- blue berries. Moist, free-draining soil in full sun.

A slow growing, dense evergreen shrub to 60cm, with dark Berberis microphylla ‘Pygmaea’ green rounded leaves, grey beneath Thorns are much reduced. Yellow flowers in spring followed by purple berries 2L £7.50 in autumn. Grow in any moist, well drained soil in sun or semi-shade.

A compact, suckering, deciduous shrub native to Japan (1.3 x Berberis sieboldii 1.3m). The oval, mid-green leaves borne on reddish stems turn radiant orange and red in the autumn. Pale yellow flowers in 2L £7.50 April-May are followed by shiny orange-red fruits. Moist but well drained soil in full sun. Superb for autumn colour.

Tall, arching pink-red flower stems up to 2m carry drooping racemes of green flowers shading to red at the base Beschonneria yuccoides on established plants . Plant in full sun in a free draining soil. Re- 2L £7.50 markably hardy given adequate drainage, or grow as a con- tainer plant and over-winter under cover.

An evergreen yucca-like perennial . the sword-shaped leaves Beschonneria yuccoides are grey-green with a silvery sheen. Tall, arching pink-red flower ‘Quicksilver’ stems up to 2m carry drooping racemes of green flowers shading to red at the base on established plants . Plant in full sun in a free 2L £7.50 draining soil. Remarkably hardy given adequate drainage, or grow as a container plant and over-winter under cover.

A tuberous, deciduous, twining perennial climber to 2m from Central and South America. Clusters of bell-shaped flowers, pale Bomarea edulis (syn. B. hirtella) red or pink outside, green and yellow with dark red markings on the inside borne from early summer into autumn. Grow under 2L £12.50 glass in bright light but not full sun in a well-drained compost, or outside in a container and overwinter under cover.

A tuberous, deciduous twining perennial climber to 2m from Chile. Clusters of dark pink or purple tubular flowers with blue Bomarea salsilla and dark purple markings in early summer. Grow in a moist, well- drained soil over a support or through a shrub. A mulch applied 2L £12.50 once the stems have died down will help protect the crown and tubers. Alternatively in a conservatory or container and overwin- ter under cover.

An erect, large (4m x 4m) semi-evergreen shrub from the Andes of Chile, Peru and Argentina. Lance-shaped dark- Buddleja globosa green leaves are carried on quadrangular stems. Orange- yellow ball-like, honey- scented inflorescences 2.5 cm across 2L £12.50 are borne in profusion in early summer. Grow in a moist but well drained soil in sun or semi-shade. C A strong-growing shrub from northern Chile and Peru. Caesalpinia spinosa Evergreen, with bi-pinnate mid - green leaves and spines on the stems. Elegant pea-like yellow-orange flowers with red 2L £15.00 flecking in 20cm long panicles in summer. A plant for a warm, sheltered site, best against a sunny wall in a well drained soil.

An upright evergreen shrub to 3m from California with comparatively long, narrow leaves with a warty surface and Ceanothus papillosus are sticky to the touch. Rich blue flowers in profusion during late spring-early summer. Discovered by David Douglas and 2L £7.50 introduced by William Lobb. Plant in a sunny position with shelter from cold winds in any reasonable free-draining soil. One of the less hardy species.

A robust shrub of 2.5 x 2.5m, native of Chile and N. Argentina. Colletia hystrix (syn. C. armata) An almost leafless shrub, the stems bear strong, stout spines. The branches are crowded with small, fragrant, white flowers duriing 2L £12.50 late summer and autumn. Plant in a well-drained soil in full sun and sheltered from cold winds.

The branches are crowded with small, (syn. C. armata ‘Rosea’) fragrant, white flowers opening from pink buds during late 2L £12.50 summer and autumn. Plant in a well-drained soil in full sun and sheltered from cold winds.

A spiny, almost leafless shrub to 2m x 2m, native to Chile, Colletia spinosissima Argentina and Ecuador. Fragrant white flowers are produced 2L £12.50 in late spring and summer. Best in a sheltered sunny position in moist but well drained soil.

A large, dense evergreen shrub Ht. 5m x S. 3m. Native to the Valdivian rain forests of Chile. In May - June it becomes a wonderful spectacle, with it’s long stalked, fleshy crimson 2L £7.50 flowers hanging like lanterns in abundance.Requires a lime free soil moist and free draining. It appreciates light shade.

A medium sized evrgreen shrub with narrow, lanceolate leaves Crinodendron hookerianum Ht. 3m x S. 3m. In May - June it becomes a wonderful spectacle, ‘Ada Hoffmann’ with it’s long stalked, fleshy pale - pink flowers hanging like lanterns in abundance. A direct clone of the red Chilean 2-3L £7.50 Lantern tree selected in the wild within the Valdivian rain forests Not avaialable at present of Chile. Requires a lime free soil moist and free draining. It appreciates light shade.

A medium sized evergreen shrub / small tree Ht. 3m x S. 3m. Dark green, glossy ovate leaves. Fragrant, fringed, bell shaped flowers bourne in late summer. Hardy to -5 degrees C, best 2L £7.50 grown as a wall shrub. It requires a lime free soil, moist and well 5L £15.00 drained soil. Native of the Andes in central and southern Chile.

Cupressus dupreziana var. A narrowly conical, hardy , native of Morocco where atlantica (syn. C. atlantica) it is now critically endangered, with some 2500 years old. Grow in any reasonable, well-drained soil in sun or partial 2L £15.00 shade with some shelter from cold, drying winter winds. D An evergreen shrub with small, holly-like leaves, slowly reaching 1.8m, from South America. First introduced from Chile by plant Desfontainea spinosa collector William Lobb. The pendent tubular flowers borne in the summer and autumn are scarlet with a yellow-orange 2L £12.50 mouth. Grow in a sheltered position in semi-shade in a lime- free, moist but well drained soil.

A medium-sized deciduous shrub of 3m, native of Central Discaria serratifolia (Vent.) and Southern Chile and Argentina. Lustrous green leaves on B. & H. ex Masters drooping branches with paired 2cm long thorns. Fragrant, white flowers in crowded fascicles borne on the previous 2L £12.50 year’s wood in early summer. Plant in well drained soil in a sunny, sheltered position with shelter from cold, drying winds.

A small slender, conical tree Ht.7-8m. A native to the Magellnic and Valdivian temperate rain foresChile and Argentina, where winteri it is seen a a dominant species of the evergreen coastal forests. Evergreen leathery, aromatic leaves and clustered fragrant 2L £12.50 star shaped white flowers with yellow creamy centres are borne April - May. Sun or light shade, any moist well drained soil. An erect semi-evergreen tall shrub or small tree introduced Embothrium coccineum (Chilean from Chile by first introduced by William Lobb. A tall evergreen shrub up to 3m high native to Chile with Escallonia illinita aromatic glandular shots bearing large glossy-green leaves. Panicles of fragrant white flowers during summer and autumn. 5L £12.50 Well drained soil in sun or light shade. Drought tolerant, but shelter from cold winds.

A strong-growing evergreen shrub of 3m x3m with glossy dark Escallonia ‘Iveyi’ green leaves and large panicles of white flowers in summer and autumn. Originated as a seedling at Caerhays Castle, 2L £7.50 and named for a gardener there. Grow in a fertile, well-drained soil in a sunny position sheltered from cold winds.

A fast growing evergreen shrub up to 2.5 m high from central Escallonia pulverulenta Chile. Needs a mild, sheltered site (hardy -7 to -10°C) in full sun and shelter from cold winds. Can be grown as a wall 2L £7.50 shrub. Leathery glossy green toothed leaves and panicles of white flowers in late summer and autumn.

An evergreen shrub or small tree of 5m x 3m, although can be readily trimmed to size/shape from Chile and Peru. Reddish- Escallonia resinosa pink pubescent shoots and shiny-green, sticky, toothed leaves. Notable for its curry- like aroma, particularly in humid 5L £12.50 conditions or following rain. White flowers in spring and early summer. Grow in moist, well-drained soil in a sunny position.

An evergreen shrub of 2-3m in cultivation, native to Chile. The shoots and toothed leaves are covered in a grey tomentum. Escallonia revoluta Terminal racemes of soft-pink to white flowers are borne from 5L £12.50 August to October. Grow in a sheltered position or with wall protection in a moist but well-drained soil.

A strong-growing evergreen shrub to 4m from Chile with glossy Escallonia rubra var. macrantha dark green, aromatic leaves. Panicles of rose-crimson flowers in 2L £7.50 summer. Grow in a fertile, well-drained soil in a sunny position sheltered from cold winds. Excellent as a coastal hedging plant.

A deciduous shrub Ht 2m x S 2m with graceful, arching Escallonia virgata branches bearing small glossy, dark green leaves. Raceames of pure white flowers appear June - July. A native of southern 2L £7.50 Chile and Argentina growing upto the tree line and found 5L £15.00 as far south as the Magellan Straits, it is the hardiest of the Escallonias. Not for chalky soil.

An upright medium-sized heath-like evergreen shrub of 1.5 x Fabiana imbricata 1.5m, native of Chile and Argentina. Plumes of white tubular flowers borne during the summer. Grow in a well-drained soil 2L £7.50 in a sunny position and with shelter from cold, drying winds.

A low-growing, mound-forming heath-like evergreen shrub of Fabiana imbricata ‘Prostrata’ 0.6 x1m. Plumes of pale mauve-tinted tubular flowers borne during the summer. Grow in a well-drained soil in a sunny 2L £7.50 position and with shelter from cold, drying winds. Hardier than the species and ideal for a larger rock garden or wall top.

An upright medium-sized heath-like evergreen shrub of 1.5 Fabiana imbricata f. violacea x 1.5m, native of Chile and Argentina. Plumes of lavender- mauve tubular flowers borne during the summer. Grow in a 2L £7.50 well-drained soil in a sunny position and with shelter from cold, drying winds.

An evergreen perennial forming rosettes of toothed, mid to dark green linear leaves, up to 50cm long. In summer, mature rosettes Fascicularia bicolor develop a dense central cluster of pale blue flowers surrounded by white bracts, at which time the inner-most leaves turn bright 2L £7.50 scarlet. Native of central Chile. Grow in full sun in a free-draining soil.

A graceful cypress like conifer with descending branches. Ht. Fitzroya cupressoides 15m x S6m. Slow growing and hardy but best sheltered from strong winds. Any moist well drained soil. Endangered in it’s 2L £15.00 native temperate rain forests of Chile and Argentina.

Hardy, evergreen clump-forming perennial (0.3 x 0.3m) with Francoa appendiculata deeply- lobed leaves and tall spikes (90cm) of pale-pink flowers, each with a dark-pink central stain, throughout 2L £5.00 summer and autumn. Moist, well-drained soil in sun or partial shade. Endemic to Chile.

Hardy, evergreen clump-forming perennial (0.3 x 0.3m) with Francoa sonchifolia deeply- lobed leaves. Tall spikes (70cm) of shell-pink flowers, each petal with a red-pink centre, throughout summer and 2L £5.00 autumn. Moist, well- drained soil in sun or partial shade. Endemic to Chile.

A graceful shrub with slender, arching stems. The small scarlet magellanica var. gracilis and violet flowers are freely borne through summer and autumn, the being unusually long and slender. Grow in 2L £5.00 full sun or partial shade in a moist, well-drained soil.

A hardy fushia with graceful arching branches and lance Fuchshia magellanica var. shaped soft green leaves Ht. 1m x S 1m. Abundant pale molinae pink flowers appear throughout late summer. Moist, fertile soil in full sun or light shade. Suitable for containers. Shelter 2L £5.00 from cold winds and apply a deep mulch pre-winter. First collected from the island of Chiloe, Chile.

Small, narrow red and purple flowers borne throughout summer and autumn are prominent against 2L £5.00 the dark green foliage. A good plant for the front of a border or path edge. Plant in any moist, well- drained soil in sun or partial shade.

A small shrub of spreading habit with slender stems. The leaves are grey-green, rose-tinted when young and irregularly Fuchsia magellanica ‘Versicolor’ variegated with cream and pink when mature. The pendant flowers, borne through summer and autumn have a scarlet 2L £5.00 calyx and violet . Grow in full sun or partial shade in a moist, well-drained soil. G

An upright evergreen shrub up to 0.5m. White flowers borne April- June. The flowers are hermaphrodite so self-pollinates insana to produce ornamental brownish-red fruits. A native of S. Chile and Argentina, it requires a moist, lime-free soil and 2L £10.00 grows best in dappled shade. First introduced by Standish & Noble’s nursery in the mid-1800’s but has always been rare in cultivation.

The Prickly Heath from the Magellan Straits of Chile is hardy, dwarf Gaultheria mucronata ‘Alba’ evergreen shrub with wiry stems to 60-90cm. Small bell-shaped white flowers in May and June are followed by white fruits with a faint pink tinge which deepens with age. Best planted in groups 2L £5.00 or with a male form for pollination. Plant in a lime-free, moist but well drained soil in sun or partial shade.

A very rare, hardy, perennial short climber to 1.3m from E. Lathyrus davidii Asia. First collected by Père Armand David in 1863. Rare, semi-evergreen shrub native to the Coastal Cordilleras of Chile and Chiloé island of 2.5 x 2.5m. Azara is a genus of 11 species and several of evergreen trees and which are endemic to South America and in particular Chile. They produce delicately scented yellow flowers in spring and summer depending on the species and vary in height from the 1.5m Azara alpina to the 7m plus Azara microphylla.

Mark Paviour holds a National Collection of Azara sp. awarded by Plant Heritage. There is another collections in Exeter at the University.

Endemic to central Chile, often mountain foothills it does mean the plants are suitable to growing in UK and so far in North Herefrordshire our plants have endured heavy snows, deep frost (beyond -12), prolonged wet months and drought conditions.

Tips to help the plant establish :- plant in a soil that can drain, sheltered aspect, mulch heavily over winter and over summer to stop competing weed. Stake January frost against wind rock whilst establishng. protect against curious rabbits - thus far we have no evidence the Azara are to their taste.

Feed with a good alround fertiliser and or well rotted manure. No pruning required.
