  • Food Selection by Northern Yellow-Cheeked Crested Gibbons (Nomascus Annamensis)In Northern Cambodia
Food Selection by Northern Yellow-cheeked Crested Gibbons (Nomascus annamensis)in Northern Cambodia Naven Hon A thesis submitted to Victoria University of Wellington in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Ecology and Biodiversity School of Biological Sciences Victoria University of Wellington New Zealand 2016 i Abstract Tropical regions have extremely high plant diversity, which in turn supports a high diversity of animals. However, not all plant species are selected by animals as food sources, with some herbivores selecting only specific plants as food as not all plants have the same nutrient make up. Animals must select which food items to include in their diets, as the amount and type of nutrients in their diet can affect lifespan, health, fitness, and reproduction. Gibbon populations have declined significantly in recent years due to habitat destruction and hunting. Northern yellow-cheeked crested gibbon (Nomascus annamensis) is a newly described species, and has a limited distribution restricted to Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. The northern yellow-cheeked crested gibbons play an important role in seed dispersal, yet little is currently known about this species, including its food selection and nutritional needs. However, data on food selection and nutritional composition of selected food items would greatly inform the conservation of both wild and captive populations of this species. This study aims to quantify food selection by the northern yellow-cheeked crested gibbons by investigating the main plant species consumed and the influence of the availability of food items on their selection. The study also explores the nutritional composition of food items consumed by this gibbon species and identifying key plant species that provide these significant nutrients.

Comparative genomics of the so far uncultured cluster-2 Candidatus Frankia datiscae Dg1, with cultivated Frankiae has revealed genome reduction, but no obvious physiological impairments. A direct physiological assay on nodule tissues from Coriaria myrtifolia infected with a closely-related strain permitted the identification of a requirement for alkaline conditions.

  • The Wood Cross Sections of Hermann Nördlinger (1818–1897)
IAWA Journal, Vol. 29 (4), 2008: 439–457 THE WOOD CROSS SECTIONS OF HERMANN NÖRDLINGER (1818–1897) Ben Bubner Leibniz-Zentrum für Agrarlandschaftsforschung (ZALF) e.V., Institut für Landschaftsstoffdynamik, Eberswalder Str. 84, 15374 Müncheberg, Germany [E-mail: [email protected]] SUMMARY Hermann Nördlinger (1818–1897), forestry professor in Hohenheim, Germany, published a series of wood cross sections in the years 1852 to 1888 that are introduced here to the modern wood anatomist. The sec- tions, which vary from 50 to 100 μm in thickness, are mounted on sheets of paper and their quality is high enough to observe microscopic details. Their technical perfection is as remarkable as the mode of distribution: sections of 100 wood species were presented in a box together with a booklet containing wood anatomical descriptions. These boxes were dis- tributed as books by the publisher Cotta, from Stuttgart, Germany, with a maximum circulation of 500 per volume. Eleven volumes comprise 1100 wood species from all over the world. These include not only conifers and broadleaved trees but also shrubs, ferns and palms representing a wide variety of woody structures. Excerpts of this collection were also pub- lished in Russian, English and French. Today, volumes of Nördlingerʼs cross sections are found in libraries throughout Europe and the United States. Thus, they are relatively easily accessible to wood anatomists who are interested in historic wood sections. A checklist with the content of each volume is appended. Key words: Cross section, wood collection, wood anatomy, history. INTRODUCTION Wood scientists who want to distinguish wood species anatomically rely on thin sec- tions mounted on glass slides and descriptions in books that are illustrated with micro- photographs.

(CORNACEAE) ENDOCARPS DURING THEIR DEVELOPMENT MARIA MOROZOWSKA, ILONA WYSAKOWSKA M. Morozowska, I. Wysakowska, Department of Botany, Poznań University of Life Sciences, Wojska Polskiego 71 C, 60-625 Poznań, Poland, e-mail: [email protected], [email protected] (Received: June 17, 2015. Accepted: October 20, 2015) ABSTRACT. Results of anatomical studies on the developing endocarps of Cornus mas and C. officinalis are pre- sented. Formation of an endocarp and anatomical changes in its structure from the flowering stage to fully developed fruits were observed with the use of LM and SEM. In the process of anatomical development of endocarps the formation of two layers, i.e. the inner and the outer endocarp, was observed. Changes in their anatomical structure consisted in a gradual thickening of cell walls and their lignification. The ligni- fication of endocarp cell walls begins in the inner endocarp, it proceeds in the outside parts of the outer endocarp, with an exception of several layers of cells forming the transition zone (circular strand) present on its margin, and finally, almost at the same time, in the rest of the outer endocarp. Cell walls of the cells distinguishing the germinating valves undergo thickening delayed by several days in comparison to other endocarp cells. Thickening of their cell walls starts in cells situated close to the inner endocarp and proceeds to its outer parts, and their lignification is not very intensive.

  • Central Sikhote-Alin
WHC Nomination Documentation File Name: 766rev.pdf UNESCO Region: EUROPE AND THE NORTH AMERICA __________________________________________________________________________________________________ SITE NAME: Central Sikhote-Alin DATE OF INSCRIPTION: 16th December 2001 STATE PARTY: RUSSIAN FEDERATION CRITERIA: N (iv) DECISION OF THE WORLD HERITAGE COMMITTEE: Excerpt from the Report of the 25th Session of the World Heritage Committee The Committee inscribed Central Sikhote-Alin on the World Heritage List under criterion (iv): Criterion (iv): The nominated area is representative of one of the world's most distinctive natural regions. The combination of glacial history, climate and relief has allowed the development of the richest and most unusual temperate forests in the world. Compared to other temperate ecosystems, the level of endemic plants and invertebrates present in the region is extraordinarily high which has resulted in unusual assemblages of plants and animals. For example, subtropical species such as tiger and Himalayan bear share the same habitat with species typical of northern taiga such as brown bear and reindeer. The site is also important for the survival of endangered species such as the scaly-sided (Chinese) merganser, Blakiston's fish-owl and the Amur tiger. This serial nomination consists of two protected areas in the Sikhote- Alin mountain range in the extreme southeast of the Russian Federation: NAME LOCATION AREA Sikhote-Alin Nature Preserve Terney District 401,428 ha Goralij Zoological Preserve Coastal zone on the Sea of Japan, N of Terney 4,749 ha The Committee encouraged the State Party to improve management of the Bikin River protected areas (Bikin Territory of Traditional Nature Use and Verkhnebikinski zakaznik) before nominating it as an extension.
